Why is there soooooo few particles, but they are all used for soooooo many different purposes? What's the point continuously reading something that you can't understand? Reading basic kids books and shounen manga are easy, but beyond that is just impossible. non-kids Japanese reading is far harder than English academic paper with shitload of bizarre words since English grammar is simple enough to follow. I read ゴブリンスレイヤ LNs around 9 months after I began learning Japanese - fell that it wasn't a bad choice to read early.

Good choice for me since I was hooked by manga and actually had the interest in reading the rest. And that, really, is all that matters - the best book to read is the one that will keep you reading it - everything else, the difficulty of the grammar or vocab or what else is there? is secondary.

Very simple grammatically, only things that were somewhat confusing were intermissions, that were written in a weird one-man dialog style where you only get sentences of one character and responses are not written but implied or inferred to.
Nothing special about vocab either - some RPG/fantasy stuff that is easy to pick up.

I started LNs after reading both the scanlated manga and the RAWs of it - so had plenty of context - made reading easier.
Also cheated by having the yen press translations of the first 2 volumes of LN at hand - would alt+tab to them if some specific phrase would give me trouble.
I think you pretty much have to have the actual translation of whatever you are trying to read when your are early in the study (parallel reading?)

Tae Kim's guide is a structured grammar guide whereas the DoJG is a grammar dictionary series, excellent for looking up grammar points and a more in-depth reference but it requires a basic familiarity beforehand.

Retention of words and kanji improves x10 when you encounter them during actual reading be it books, VNs or manga.
Read more and you are bound to stumble into words from your deck.

A: You can(should!) start reading without doing Anki at all, though it is better to stick to books and hook-able VNs since you can use yomichan with them, or you will have to spend a lot of time on jisho looking up individual kanji (those OCR kanji readers are unreliable).

I just finished up my listening practice for the month. If you remember, my goal was 60 episodes per month, but I've changed it to 23 hours per month, because it makes specials/movies/OVAs easier to deal with. I was in a rush to finish because until a week ago I was counting Shingeki no Kyojin for July, but it was disingenuous, since I watched it in June, so I changed it.

For the most part I haven't really felt much improvement, but there have been a few times in Eureka Seven where I thought I was understanding more than I would have a month ago. I'm really starting to doubt that you can become fluent just by listening. I haven't learned a single word from just listening. Every word I've learned has been from looking at the subtitle files when I really want to understand a line.

Now some thoughts on individual series:
Relife: Kind of understandable because I read the manga. The anime cuts ~75% of the manga, so it was disappointing.
Bubblegum Crisis: Too hard, didn't understand anything.
Usagi Drop: Lots of understandable scenes with kids, but adult conversations were about divorce, immunizations and kid-raising stuff, so that part was too difficult. Really enjoyed rewatching it.
Konosuba: Wanted to try a series with lots of talking. I tried Katanagatari but dropped it instantly and tried Konosuba instead. Couldn't understand much and it was kind of a slog to get through. Saving S2 for later.
Eureka Seven: There is a decent amount of understandable stuff, mostly involving Renton. Any time it switches to the military I understand nothing. I'm really enjoying rewatching it.

Even though I've completed 495 anime series, it is hard to find series that I would enjoy rewatching raw. I'm still sticking with only rewatching for the foreseeable future. I'll be back next month for another update.

The problem here is that in order to properly "digest" the grammar in a meaningful way, you must first know enough words that you don't have to think too hard about to observe exactly how the grammar is working in a sentence.

This is why most of us dekirus-in-the-making advise vocabulary study in conjunction with RTK. This way, when you go to read Tae Kim, you're ONLY learning grammar instead of having to absorb words at the same time (which dilutes your learning of the grammar).

Japanese has honestly not that bad of grammar when you think about it later on. Not like French (french 2nd language speaker) where you're on the hook for a huge pile of possible conjugations for each verb, and the patterns are not always intuitive, plus the fact that gendered languages suck as a whole. Japanese trades all that in for a handful of "context sensitive" particles whose functions change based on what they're attached to. The only hard part is getting over yourself and realizing that it WORKS. Arguing with it will only make you angry and cause you to give up. Once your brain knows what to expect from a sentence, these context sensitive things suddenly become a LOT nicer than having a whole bunch of random shit that only exists "to be different" from other particles.

Here's a thought - try taking a few sentences from NHK EASY news and remove all particles and use what you know about Japanese to infer the meaning of the sentence without any particles whatsoever. You'll start to see that on a basic level, the sentences largely make sense without them because your brain is remarkably good at putting the puzzle pieces together.

I've been debating whether I should get ゼロ or not.

I bought a copy of 見参 long ago. I played some of it, and thought it was fun and cool, but never resumed. I found it really intimidating for my Japanese level at the time. I just wanted games at the time that could provide fun mining opportunities, and I'd heard a lot of good things about the series. It was disappointing to drop it like so many other things I picked up.

I'm aware of the guides on YT and the net, but I don't want to just be reading English and going back and forth on a Japanese game--that won't improve my Japanese much at all. If I was to use those resources, they would be for confirming text. Yet, 見参 is so text heavy that I would worry about getting discouraged too much and quitting. I have similar worries about ゼロ、though I imagine it might be slightly easier due to more modern vocabulary usage. Probably cleaner and sharper text fonts compared to the PS3 version too.

Yes you can. You typically only need to re-time at the beginning of the subs and then after the mid-point. Both times the re-time is literally just holding down a key until the subtitle matches the first line of dialogue. It's not at all difficult and it takes practically no time. There's only Odyssey and Zelda, neither of which would be good for learning as one is a platformer and the other is open world. Octopath is the only one I'd bother playing in Japanese since it's mostly an RPG. Switch also has Dark Souls now but I don't know why you wouldn't play that on PC, but I suppose if your PC can't run an 8 year old game then you can get that too.
