This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Wow it's almost like reading is the correct answer and not trying to "learn" the individual Kanji

You don't have time to fuck about with "sorties" that Heisenberg told you to make up when you're skimming TBS news at 5日本時間 over an 熱い cup of コーヒー, you have to recognize the shapes of entire words, not just the individual Kanji. You also have to know its reading because you otherwise won't know the word, and you have to be able to do all of this on the fly.

Basically you need to realize that RTK is a meme and that reading is not a meme.

>Wow it's almost like reading is the correct answer and not trying to "learn" the individual Kanji
Look I don't know about you guys but even when reading, the process is the same. I find a kanji I don't know, learn it, and study it. There's no way I can memorize it just by encountering it while reading. I can't imagine others can do that either, but maybe I'm just not as retentive as that. The only difference is whether I encounter them during read or on a flash card, but it still just boils down to memorizing them on a flash card in the end.

I'm not saying don't use flashcards, but put a WORD on that card and not just a Kanji. Learn the word, then you have a reference point for what that Kanji's reading might be in another word when you encounter it, and perhaps even a hint as to what the word might mean.

I did RTK till 500 or so then got bored because I wasn't learning jack shit, and I'd figured out that actually remembering the Kanji isn't impossible like everyone seems to think. Turns out it's easier for me to jot down some words I find throughout my day, then review them as words and not fuck about with dumbass stories that waste 100% extra time that I could have been reading that article on Kapybaras eating chilled watermelons to beat the 猛烈な暑さ.

The simple fact is that if you're not learning words, you're not learning anything. Words are going to help you "get" grammar when you need to read Tae Kim's guide and not constantly be going "fuck what is 学校 again?" There's no reason to know that 学ぶ is its own word yet, and 99% of the time when you see 学 it's gonna be read がく, but you'd know that if you learned 大学・小学校・中学校・学生・学者・and conveniently, you'd have also learned a 大 reading (which you'd later find out is an inexact science, down to individual words), 小 not only means small/little but is often read しょう but then you'll meet 小川 some day and go "oh fuck." but you sure as hell won't forget it. If you didn't figure out that 中 gets read ちゅう a lot, you're gonna learn because it's all over the place (熱中症、中央、集中力). God don't get me started on 力, but knowing that things that are a -りょく implies some sort of power/ability/strength/etc doesn't have to come from the Heisendome, it could have just as easily come from you learning 攻撃力 and 防御力 from your JRPG and magically just knowing that 能力 電力 and 魔力 are exactly what they are without even questioning it.

Words are power. Stories are not. You'll learn the Kanji just as quickly through vocab as you will through RTK, except you'll actually be learning Japanese at the same time.

many new kanji/words on each page isn't as big of a problem as it seems. you don't mine every new word you encounter, and building up a backlog of mined words isn't a problem either -- you might see them a few more times before you get to them, and that will just make them even easier to get down in anki.
remember that anki is a supplement, you could learn without it, it just helps. your anki deck is not a complete representation of how many words you kn ow.
just because what you're doing isn't a complete waste of time does not mean it isn't worth improving. if you have 90%+ retention and aren't spending an unreasonable amount of time on anki, it's probably fine though.

Start with Egyptian hieroglyphics and work your way down to Imperial Aramaic and then Hebrew in order to understand how the characters work. Ok, sure. Simple

The context is sufficient so there's no need for me to indicate the topic.
This happens in two cases during a dialog:
1) the topic is the locutor
2) the topic is the interlocutor
We're dealing with the second case here, as you can hopefully tell.
So there's no need to begin the sentence with "[お前さん/貴方/貴様/そちら/お客さん/19536758番殿]には". to

Then comes センス. It's a noun, and it's also the subject of the ない auxiliary. I opted to not use "が" because it would feel unnatural eventhough it's the more gramatically correct way.
I believe I do not neet to explain the first proposition any further.

so, onto proposition 2, we have ジャップ語を諦めろ which is the most basic sentence in jap.
Here, the subject is the interlocutor as well as the topic of the sentence. As the topic didn't change, we don't need to indicate it, and since we omit the topic which also happen to be the subject of the verb we end up with a minimalistic sentence.
there's ジャップ語, a noun, and also the dirrect object complement as indicated by the strictly and purely gramatical particle を.
諦めろ is a verb conjugated in the imperative form.

Any questions?

Was "untarnished" that out of place? I gave it almost no thought when I was typing it...

Thank you, DJT, for tearing my English apart, but I don't know if I deserved it.

Well, by the looks of things, mastery of second and third language may as well be a lifetime process.
I think that even if you claim to "fluently read"(tm) foreign language X, you must understand not only how much that means, but also how little. I believed myself to have become a fluent reader of English four years ago, but coming back to the texts that I read in 2014 reveals to me that I was not getting much of their nuance. I was reading English mechanically and it made sense to me in broad strokes. I thought English a language for people who see the world in broad strokes and think in clear, grammatical categories. An error, obviously. It's a human language.

In Japanese, I'm approaching the same territory. I often move along the text at a steady pace, but it's all in broad strokes, the grammar too prominent in my head. Not long until I'm a "fluent reader", perhaps. It only begins from there.

Nice one dipshit. I'm going to guess you don't listen nearly as much, so enjoy having your reading ability blaze past your listening ability, leading to shitty listening ability and accent in the future.

Do what's recommended and active listen as much as you read AT A MINIMUM, but preferably listen more than you read. Cut your reading to 2 hours and increase your active listening to 3 hours. You'll thank yourself later.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Making major changes to these core pages is something I'm rather apprehensive about, unless there are overwhelming calls to change specific key elements. That said, I've put together to test pages to see how everyone feels about them.
https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/pages/test.html
https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/pages/test2.html

test.html is an example of the full main guide with the resource guide integrated, as opposed to two separate pages. Thought it might be worth floating the idea of having them together, they don't have to be.
test2.html is an example of those larger suggested changes implemented, making a more simplified version of the guide.
What do anons think? Further feedback is welcome.
