You should really take this more as a cool thing about Japanese, that it is so flexible that you can just swap in words freely with no regard to other grammar bullshit.

In English you would have to change the entire structure of the sentence to convey the same meaning. The fact that different "versions" of the dialogue can exist in the same game is a wonderful show of how based Japanese is.

I have been studying Japanese using Japanese news channels, Genki I, Anki, and online one-on-ones with native speakers. I have been studying seriously (maybe 3 hours per day) for about 3 months now and feel that my progress is slow. I'm having trouble remembering vocabulary in general. I can recall MAYBE 500 words correctly if prompted about them. I have two questions:

When does the pace of picking up vocabulary start to pick up? I assume at some critical threshold, when you recognize 90% of words in a sentence, then that remaining 10% is WAY easier to remember. I guess it is just discouraging when I have to hit the "review again in 1 minute" button on so many words in Anki...

Am I just too novice, or why does it seem like related Japanese words do not really sound like each other? For example, in English you have several words that are related and even sound related: e.g. 'airplane's fly through the 'air' using 'airfoils', and land at 'airports'

You will need to learn words even if you learn kanji beforehand. But the other way around it works: if you learn words you will learn the kanji they are composed of. It helps to have a dedicated field on your vocabulary cards containing kanji "meanings" for multi-kanji words.

And I know of several people who learned Japanese for a couple years and then went back and did RTK to learn to write anyway because recognizing kanji apparently didn't help with recall. Do RTK and learn to write 20-50 kanji per day and get it done in 1.5-3 months, whether you know Japanese or not. It's still the fastest way.

For some reason I had better listening comprehension than reading comprehension for a long time, to the point where it was easier to understand voiced heroine dialogue without reading it than it was to read the protagonist's unvoiced dialogue. The only thing that amended this was forcing myself to read a shitton.

As far as I can tell you're only going to run into problems with your listening comprehension falling behind your reading comprehension if you NEVER listen to Japanese, not as music, dialogue voicing, anime, etc. and grind too many flashcards. The only things I did that deviate from DJT's normal recommendations were listening to shittons of Japanese music and games and not using Anki, so that's all I can think of.
