This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

I want to pre-mine the next book I'll read - does anyone here has experience doing that?
Are there tools to which I could feed a text of a novel and have it output a frequency word-list for that novel?
Also is there anything that could help automate the making of an anki deck out of such a list?

Could be neat to have such an individual deck for a book or a VN and work with it for a week or three before starting reading.

> I am currently a beginner, and I was wondering if it is counter productive to look up kanji withought furigana.

Yes, it would be counterproductive. The intended audience of comic books is literate native speakers, not beginning learners. That means that even with fuirgana, you would be in trouble because the content is not linguistically simple.

You should really take this more as a cool thing about Japanese, that it is so flexible that you can just swap in words freely with no regard to other grammar bullshit.

In English you would have to change the entire structure of the sentence to convey the same meaning. The fact that different "versions" of the dialogue can exist in the same game is a wonderful show of how based Japanese is.

I have been studying Japanese using Japanese news channels, Genki I, Anki, and online one-on-ones with native speakers. I have been studying seriously (maybe 3 hours per day) for about 3 months now and feel that my progress is slow. I'm having trouble remembering vocabulary in general. I can recall MAYBE 500 words correctly if prompted about them. I have two questions:

When does the pace of picking up vocabulary start to pick up? I assume at some critical threshold, when you recognize 90% of words in a sentence, then that remaining 10% is WAY easier to remember. I guess it is just discouraging when I have to hit the "review again in 1 minute" button on so many words in Anki...

Am I just too novice, or why does it seem like related Japanese words do not really sound like each other? For example, in English you have several words that are related and even sound related: e.g. 'airplane's fly through the 'air' using 'airfoils', and land at 'airports'

It's going to take longer to do RTK because you're frontloading a lot of information at once. That's bad because RTK is boring and just subtracts from the time you could spend reading. Include example words if you already know them but don't pressure yourself to memorize vocab in isolation alongside the kanji you're learning to write (if you meant the former as opposed to the latter than we're in agreement). Can't imagine someone torturing themselves doing inefficient bullshit like that for months upon months.

there is factually less to learn because you are not building a new association between the kanji and an english word, you are building on associations that already exist (and were necessary no matter what you did, which cannot be said for the english words)
even if i had gone through at a similar rate of kanji per day it would be better than what most people talk about because i didn't spend 1-2 hours a day on it and it didn't impact my reading and listening practice, but it would be hard to compare because i practiced writing words rather than individual kanji, a significant portion of them i didn't fail a single time

the question is how much that helped you. if it still took you months to learn to write 2200 joyo kanji (i bet you didnt even learn to write all of them) the answer is "not very much". but im glad youve started to vaguely hint at the time it took you instead of just asserting that learning japanese makes it faster so that your claim can be tested in some way.

the original claim that "RTK is the fastest way to learn to write and it doesn't matter when you do it so you might as well do it first" is filled with several fundamental misconceptions:
that learning to write kanji before you know japanese isn't slower than learning to write after you know japanese
that every part of the RTK method is necessary to learn to write kanji, when it's entirely designed for someone who does not know japanese
that RTK is the approach to take even when you already know japanese, taking the above point into consideration
that learning to write 2200 jouyou kanji is the right goal when they are not the 2200 most frequently used kanji
that learning to write kanji in isolation is equivalent to learning to write japanese or is a step that cannot be skipped (which is similar to the idea that you need to study kanji before you can learn words)
using anecdote to argue these points is unnecessary and opens the discussion to distraction about how fast RTK can be done, since it is inherently difficult to measure the more laid-back approach taken by most people who learn to write later, and it is hard to compare methods that have different results, but further all of these points can be easily examined using simple facts which is what you should do yourself

At 2:47:21 where he talks about his regrets over reading too much instead of active listening more is haunting . He wishes he had taken Matt's advice and actively listened as much as he read, or preferably more than he read. He read a lot every day and only did an hour or two of active listening on the side, and he would compensate for his lack of direct listening ability by relying on the vocab/collocations he acquired through reading to infer what words were being said.

This also encouraged subvocalization. So now he says his his ability to discern sounds is damaged, which in turn has damaged his ability to sound native. Matt made a similar mistake in reading too much and damaging his accent. It's no wonder lowercasers shit on him. They don't appreciate the stress he places on listening, so their speech is probably absolutely awful compared to his. They probably don't even realize how comparatively incompetent they are because they confuse their ability to comprehend with their ability to output. They imagine that because they're able to sit back and hear someone making mistakes that this must mean they're on the same level but that's not remotely true.

It's normal to spend a lot of time on Anki if you can't even read NHK EASY articles yet, but once you can comfortably read those without encountering a new word/kanji every 5 seconds you should spend equal time reading those as you spent on Anki at the start.

The only thing that's going to get you better at Japanese is more Japanese. Reading just happens to be an incredibly efficient way of getting you good.

Though, I don't see the point in some of them. 電 → 电 for example, it's not significantly easier to read or write. Compare that to something more extreme like 飛 → 飞 which is admittedly pretty freaking nice, or 廠 → 厂 which is a god tier simplification.

It would be extremely hard to learn a language based on an abstract motivation like that, it pretty much has to be a genuine interest in the language itself or a genuine necessity. And by the time you learned it china's "economic miracle" might be long over, all such "miracles" end and never come back, the society having reached its peak based on the quality of the humans that live in it. China is making insane amounts of money exploiting its population, amounts of money 1980s japan could only dream of, and they're still a shithole. On top of that they're completely wreckless with finance, they don't care about the treatment of their citizens, they're a low trust society where everyone cons eachother, and they're arrogant in their treatment with their neighbours. So unless the radicals are learned later on, I am not understanding this order of learning. 虫 hasn't even been introduced yet, but 蝶 has. So with prior knowledge I'm sure what you're saying works out, but then you have to figure out why the radicals are put together to form the kanji. I've been studying Spanish for 6 months and can get through most books and understand like 95% of what is said in cartoons. Understanding live action and natives on twitch would be the next hurdle because it seems like I only understand like 10% of that, a lot of times less. But still crazy how much easier it is than Japanese. I plan studying Spanish for 5 more months before studying in Spain for a semester where I will focus on Japanese in my free time and hopefully get immersed in Spanish in my daily life.

I think I'm in the same boat as you cause I also studied Japanese in the past (for two years, which a lot of that was spent inefficiently but I learned a lot about how to learn a language in that time which has made Spanish a cake walk). For you I would suggest studying Mandarin at least until you feel like you are high intermediate, while dedicating 1 day a week to Japanese. Then eventually switch to Japanese while doing 1 day of Mandarin a week.

i can understand critiquing isolated study, particularly rtk, but english keywords? they don't matter. they're just mnemonics to help you write. if you already know japanese then you can change the english keyword to a japanese keyword. if you don't know japanese and you're doing both at the same time then just use the english keyword. it's not important.
