The average fan is not an artist or anything like that, so realistically a poll that includes everyone is a better metric than pulling art numbers from various sites.

Heavily disagree. Characters with basically no design like Koakuma and Daiyousei who are just sprites get a ton of fan art. Some characters just have pretty basic designs overall, like Sakyua who is literally just a maid. Too say that character design = popularity is pretty baseless in my opinion. Artists have favorites for various reasons just like anyone else, and dont spend tons of time just drawing the ones that look cool. Most people will gravitate twords their favorites. Newer characters will get less art because the favorites and preferred characters are already established in the artists mind. Fanart is a terrible gauge.

I wouldnt exactly say thats true. The newer characters still get tons of art, just not as much relative too the older ones. I think saying "most" is a pretty big stretch for the most part. No doubt they arent as popular, but its not like theyre hated and get no art at all. Like ive said, most artists just already have the characters they prefer drawing.

I think this is more a matter of retention. By that point the series boom in popularity had simmered down and alot of people moved on too other things. Not too mention Kancolle released a couple years later so that didnt help. At the time of Ten Desires though Touhou was still the King (Queen?) of Comiket, so the actual drop off couldn't have been that bad.

The numbers were already revealed not long ago. I cant find them again but basically from what I remember is Type Moon is still first and increased slighlty, Kancolle is still second and decreased slightly, and Touhou is back up too 3rd with a decent increase. The numbers themselves have been consistent even if its place hasnt been. The influx of Fate shit thanks too Grand Order doubled its circles numbers over the course of like 1 year. Comiket is just a popularity contest anyway. What comes out on top is the thing that is currently "trendy". What sets Touhou apart is that its still going strong even after all this time. Also as its been mentioned by a few others you also need too take Reitaisai into account, which still beat out what Type Moon has this upcoming Comiket in terms of Circle numbers.
Also in my opinion it shitty too use thing like fanart numbers and circle numbers as a measure of popularity anyway. The majority of fans do not create fanart and other shit, and so its impossible too measure how many people are still into something.
