It's not just on the level of seeing a puppy and writing a song about it, ZUN is on the level of taking the most distinct parts of the composition and adding your own twist to it.
Don't put ZUN on too high of a pedestal, you'll be disappointed. He makes some great original compositions but he's no stranger to taking someone else's work and working with it, like how touhou doujin artists do the same with his compositions. There's really no choice but to go around youtube, look for tracks that you like, then downloading that artist's entire discography. That is: finding good stuff for yourself.

For me, it's an instant turn off when the most interesting part of the game track is vocalized (sang to). Unless it's done subtly or in a creative way. That makes the process a lot quicker since I'm usually right in thinking the song is shit.
