Who here's a gunji-Ota? Is there a practical difference at all between /k/ommandos and gunji-otas?

Please include a picture of one of your favorite pieces of military hardware (guns, armor, aircraft, ships, submarines, etc.) in your reply.

A gunji-ota is a military otaku, usually characterized by a passion for military history, hardware (e.g. guns, tanks, etc.), and uniforms.

I consider myself more of a /k/ommando even though I usually only ever lurk on that board. I'm curious if a self-identified gunji-ota would consider a /k/ommando to be something different, and if so, what that difference would be.

By that definition, definitely a lot of gunji /k/omrades. The big difference would be /k/omrades can actually own guns and miltech. Major ruskaboo here.

I don't think owning weapons is a requirement for either identity/group. I lived in Okinawa for about half a year in 2017. I saw gunji-otas outside military bases all the time taking pictures of the US aircraft, and they flood US military members during airshows to talk about the planes, buy squadron patches and challenge coins, and take selfies with Sailors/Marines/Airmen. Obviously the Japanese don't own guns because of how strict their laws are.

Uniforms and non-weapon related military gear can be owned by most people throughout the world though.

A /k/ommando usually has practical experience with his object of interest so it isn't just trivia: i.e, tankers literally drove in a tank at one point, jetfags are part of a pilot family and probably have a license, anyone with an interest in a specific range of guns has those guns are knows how to get them. Historyfags will have parts of or a full kit of equipment from the era they like, and might be reenactors. This sets them apart from those poor gunji-ota in Nippon who are not allowed to own anything more dangerous than a butter knife unless they hook up with the Yakuza, which is why they get stigma from both sides: stigma from fellow Nips' cause they're interested in something they'll realistically never be able to experience, and stigma from conventional military enthusiasts because they have no practical experience with their object of interest in spite of the amount of time they've devoted.

At least, in theory. In practice, at least 40% of the people claiming such are full of hot air.

I'm a bit of a warship 'otaku' in the western sense, enough to austism about the tiniest inaccuracies in media, which I guess counts.
I doubt any private citizen, even in the US, actually owns warships despite it actually being legal, making it hard to cross into true /k/ommando territory there.

A TRENCH gun, my friend.
The Bayonet was also 16 to 18 inches long.
Yes, it was used like a spear-sword, that edge was razor sharp.

if you've ever played bf2 you'll know that this is the best weapon in the game, bar none. It has no recoil and is basically a laser beam. The only bad thing is that it's a 3 round burst but you can argue that's actually a bonus.

In Army of Two you could turn that thing into a zero recoil laser as well. It was capable of full-auto though. Are you able to switch that one to semi-auto? Rather that than burst. The Type 64 is just too aesthetic. Looks beautiful.
