Sariel has one of the best designs and boss fights in terms of atmosphere ever made. The fight itself is complete bullshit but fuck does it feel scary.

East vs West is one of the major themes of the series, though not in terms of Christianity since that was literally just hrtp. Even the name Shanghai Alice brings this across (Eastern name Shangai and Western name Alice) as well as the myriad of characters from both cultures. Even the two protagonists show this with Reimu being a traditional miko and Marisa being a western witch.
The fantasia element also feeds into this but I'm too hungover to put my thoughts together for that, maybe later.

There are still refrences throughout the series though, like the whole personified saint thing in EoSD. Jesus Christ is mentioned occasionally, and I think it is supposed to be something in the background then the focus.

4 is just basically incoherently recycling a whole bunch of done to death themes and elements in the series. It had potential but it never really tries to do anything with it.

Perhaps the most recent example of the clashing of east vs west is from TH15 with the introduction of Hecatia, a Greek titan/goddess who has since started plotting through Clownpiece in Gensokyo. What's really interesting is that Gensokyo doesn't just have only Asian cryptids and mythological creatures, but many imported western ones as well, such as chupacabras, hobgoblins, etc.

I'd want to hear more about this. I've been thinking Hopeless Masquerade where japan's national religions met to fight each other. But actually, Christianity, specifically Catholicism, is also one of Japan's national religions. There has been an underground Catholic presence in Japan since Francis Xavier and figures like Amakusa Shiro are famous[/infamous] in media. If there is a Christian element in Touhou it would be kind of an interesting way to do it by including it indirectly and hard to discover.

You summed up completely what I thought about Christianity in Touhou, the Christian references in toughly are spread far and thin but they do have meaning. Even the fact that it has vampires which live in western mansions, which are associated with Oni (吸血鬼), can be compared to the hidden aspects of Christianity - I think they have been shown to be immune to crosses. Even simple statements like “English beef” in EoSD can have deeper meaning in the whole idea of West vs East, and you can pick up these deeper themes from every stage of that game alone if you look into it deeply enough - even Patchouli Knowledge may relate to the importance of literature in these two cultures.

It's not about Christianity or eastern religion.
