I had two weeb/anon friends and we pulled out cringy things like this all the time for lulz.
Eg. one guy once made a lecture about how "Lolicon eliminates pedophilia in society", all based on made up statistics and "researches" made by Hideo Kojima and Onimusha Nagasaki.
And we dressed up in full body hazmat suits and interrupt classes asking for refined uranium. Or wear lab coats and drink dr pepper(which was not available here so we imported it) just because steins;gate got anime. Or LARP as SCP crew etc.

We arrived ten minutes before the show started, so we skipped right past the merch line. I did catch a glance afterwards though, and as far as I could tell it was the same expo stuff they were selling online.

Shirts, happis, posters, glowsticks. I think by then they had also sold out of CDs and a few skateboard decks as well.

Ah that sucks. I was hoping for other stuff too. I was talking to someone who got stuck in the merch line and almost got in late so I may skip it until after the show too.

The Expo stuff is okay but most of it was available online. I was hoping there was a vendor or two following the show around selling nendos and stuff that would make it worth waiting in line for.

The line itself was moving pretty steadily, but it was definitely long enough that you could be caught up in it and be late to the show. I'm pretty sure they were all out of happis when I had shown up, which was 7:50pm. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8, but I have no idea when the merch booth actually opened up. Maybe show up early if you wanna jump in line, because they'll probably be pretty scarce on stuff after the show. Like you said though, with most of it online you wouldn't exactly be missing out on much either.
