Holding a conversation works both ways. Listen to understand, not just to respond. Don't burden yourself with shame or guilt if you or the others don't seem that compatible as conversation partners, it doesn't always work out and it's best to know when to move on.

as far as I understand it, the game master has a general script or story laid out, which the characters (his/her pieces) will follow, while the human side has his/her own piece (maybe more?). like Battler in the first 4 games is controlling himself, though "he" is "himself" in just the first one, in the other 3 he's controlling a piece version of him which isn't aware of the metaworld, but can still influence the characters and the script laid out by the game master, though it seems in pretty much every case all murders end up happening no matter what. of course, the game master can change the script halfways, like Beato probably did in the 3rd game after Virgilia gives her advice; she probably had something planned but changes it altogether. or maybe she just changed her strategy but the script was the same?

overall, I'd say it's just a general outline of the why-who-howdunnits, which can be heavily influenced or changed altogether during the course of the game, either by the game master or by the human side, if they have enough skill (could also drive the game master into changing it).

Can someone remind me what interview it was where Ryukishi said he wanted to do an episode where Battler made everyone stay in one room?

All Agatha Christie is pretty good. She never ignores the heart when writing. I particularly liked "Death Comes As the End". Umineko prepared me to use the meta-narrative as a bit of a s"hortcut to the culprit. You can figure out the "who and why" even if you don't know the "how".

I kind of wish I had read shittier mystery first, because after reading Christie I can't help but find 99% of other mystery writers shitty.

Although I read this really good book set during the Black Death called Company of Liars. Its about as much of a mystery as Higurashi, where its more about the weird events and character dynamics but there is a lot of intrigue and twisty stuff and a supernatural undercurrent to the whole thing. A very enjoyable ride.
