I'm so tired of anki, I'm at about 1500 words. If I just stopped doing it and just read would I be ok? I'm so tired of doing anki everyday. I always fuck it up and start over again after not doing it for awhile and start a new deck or just work on past reviews.

I also lived in Japan for awhile and got pretty good at communicating with people so grammar I'm pretty good with. It was just a a lot easier to plug on anki when I lived there than now when I'm back.

Some people think that if you read you're exposing yourself to a lot of the same words and thus "of course" you'll remember them. Moreover you'll be constantly dealing with grammar and will have a better grasp of it.

As for me personally, I think remembering 20 words out of context in a dry, premade anki deck where you don't have to deal with elaborate boring fantasy stories is the best way to remember words. Please don't read dude. Nobody has ever improved at a language by reading.

He's a fraud. He can only "knows" Japanese in his little AJATT bubble and talking to other AJATT autists. The sparse few times he has any communication in Japanese its been on videos he has chosen to edit/upload and even then there is barely anything. Two major red flags gave away the game;

The problem you have is probably lack of experience. Nowadays I can instantly recognize every word I learn without problems, while I had the same problem of doing words in core but not being able to recognize reading a lot of them earlier. One important factor here may be the quality of flashcards, ever since I put one screenshots, audio and example sentences my reviewing experience and payoff have improved significantly. Having the entire context presented to you (and sometimes even recalling it) really helps with cementing words.

There are way too many non-RTKers who claim to still have trouble differentiating similar-looking kanji after spending several months to a year reading Japanese for this to be the case. You should just straight up admit that RTK is a stronger solution to that problem. If you do it properly you'll be able to distinguish 3000 kanji with few issues. You can still acknowledge that RTK might not be worth it.
