This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Cards relearned: 5
should I increase word count for the core deck? retention doesn't seem to be an issue as I always get around 90-95(today was exceptionally good) but 25 words probably means 25% more reviews which is going to take time from grammar studies and raw reading. then again the sooner i get to 3-4k in this deck the sooner I can quit it.

I'm so tired of anki, I'm at about 1500 words. If I just stopped doing it and just read would I be ok? I'm so tired of doing anki everyday. I always fuck it up and start over again after not doing it for awhile and start a new deck or just work on past reviews.

I also lived in Japan for awhile and got pretty good at communicating with people so grammar I'm pretty good with. It was just a a lot easier to plug on anki when I lived there than now when I'm back.

As for me personally, I think remembering 20 words out of context in a dry, premade anki deck where you don't have to deal with elaborate boring fantasy stories is the best way to remember words. Please don't read dude. Nobody has ever improved at a language by reading.

Matt SAYS that he supports a foundation in some materials, but if you watch any of his videos where he's trying to defend his snakeoil sales, he'll repeatedly exclaim that his method is the only way, until he gets backed into a corner and revises it.

Also, the vast majority of the Japanese speaking foreigner population who have acquired a language through a combination of output and input would like to have a word with his "no output for a year" bullshit.

He's an idiot and you're better served by speaking to actual Japanese people, brushing up with books, reviews and consuming native materials. That's all. You don't need to pay a patreon for that.

He's a fraud. He can only "knows" Japanese in his little AJATT bubble and talking to other AJATT autists. The sparse few times he has any communication in Japanese its been on videos he has chosen to edit/upload and even then there is barely anything. Two major red flags gave away the game;
1) He unironically advocates not outputting any Japanese until you have already AJATTed your way towards "native" understanding. He then says if you make ANY mistakes during output, its because you weren't ready yet and you should AJATT even more. He even goes as far as saying not to study in Japan, or that learning in Japan and having Japanese friends will actually hurt you.
2. The little output he has out there reeks of scripted/practiced phrases/sentences spoken with a convincing-sounding (to people who barely know Japanese) accent that is suspiciously casual/slurred. Its like the "cowfee" scene in that anime, where he has found a dialect casual and sloppy enough to sound native but in very limited circumstances. I'd like to hear him speak proper formal Japanese live with native speakers in person and not behind a screen with immediate computer access.

AJATT itself is probably better than learning from a non-Japanese teacher in a western University, but it requires an autistic amount of dedication and is surrounded in a fog of elitism and dogma.

it has nothing to do with lifespan, it has to do with how productive it is
building associations with english words is inherently useless but people call it a means to the end of getting the kanji in your mind
the thing is that the kanji will be in your mind better when they are associated with something that isn't temporary and useless: actual japanese words that use them
if you do want to learn to write kanji, it'll still be more productive for you to learn to write kanji after you know words that use the kanji, by associating the kanji with those words
the idea of "getting it out of the way" is a joke, especially because you will never be done finding new kanji no matter how many you practice before you learn any japanese
last but not least, spending 3 months not learning japanese is a good way to burn yourself out, and if you make it through that you might still be surprised by the fact that your first time reading isn't any easier

this is a good idea. I learn most nouns by mapping an image or illustration to the Japanese word rather than the English translation and not only does it stick in my mind better, when I go to use a sentence while speaking Japanese it just naturally comes out.

Same with listening practice, sometimes as a contextual reaction is forming in my head I will hear the Japanese word or expression appear first in an exaggerated anime voice before I consciously analyze it and 9/10 it exactly what I mean to say even if I don't understand the grammar rule behind it or its precise translation.

There are way too many non-RTKers who claim to still have trouble differentiating similar-looking kanji after spending several months to a year reading Japanese for this to be the case. You should just straight up admit that RTK is a stronger solution to that problem. If you do it properly you'll be able to distinguish 3000 kanji with few issues. You can still acknowledge that RTK might not be worth it.

Honestly, reading is the answer. Context and frequency maps to fast reading, no Japanese sees everystroke detail when they are reading normally, they know the general shape + context+the following hiragana + common compounds does 90% of the work in reading, and most unusual kanji has furigana.

It's not true. You'll be able to deduce a lot of words, but not "most". At best you can work backwards after looking up the word and thinking "oh yea the keywords do relate to that word", but that's hindsight which is mostly worthless, except it helps you remember the word.

Stop the mindless shitting on Heisig. I'm not even specifically talking about it.

Ever wondered why most Chinese should have no trouble getting the main point of a japanese passage (doesn't work vice-versa) without even studying the language? They're skimming. They already had a richer understanding of the wider range of kanji connotations that they built by knowing their usages in Chinese words. It works because unlike English the Kanji meta-language is just ideas and its phonetics has nothing to do with the meaning.

Personally, I can "read" japanese faster this way. Rather than wasting my time stuffing the potpourri of unusual kanji readings, I'm just enriching the connotation framework I talked about through learning vocab (in-context) as I remember the individual Kanji being used (out-context). It's possible to know what 直立不動 means at first encounter if you know 硬直. I use J>J dictionaries for this purpose since J>E is bad at illustrating connotations.

is every counterargument to your claims "mindless shitting on heisig"? are you that allergic to the possibility of being wrong?
skimming symbols is even lower comprehension than picking out the nouns, which is already very poor comprehension. but more importantly, kanji study wont even prepare you to do that, it'll work for something like 水銀 but not anything more complicated than that
what about knowing 硬直 has anything to do with having studied 硬 and 直? i agree with what you're saying, but i fail to see how it has anything to do with putting time into kanji

Yes I admit it. I'm jealous that I can't always tell if I'm looking at house (家) or pork (豚). I'm embarrased when I tell my friends I'm studying Japanese and they laugh when I can't write even one kanji. Then I start trying to make up excuses like "There is a phenomenon where you can recognize things without always reproducing things and I've opted out of reproducing things because writing is a useless skill in the modern world" just to save my own ego. I'm tired of spending 30 minutes of trying to look up a kanji by radicals. But I think worst of all is I'm jealous I didn't figure out that RTK is the optimal route to fluency years ago. No, more like (at least from an English perspective), Japanese / Chinese are so dissimilar from anything you've ever learned in essentially every way, on top of being relatively complex as a language itself. As an English speaker you could learn Spanish, French, and German by the time you have a decent foundation in Japanese.

You easyfags are doing a terrible job motivating people to learn the language. Maybe in your minds saying it's not hard will make people more likely to learn it, but in reality they will hear that it's easy and then realize its fucking hard and feel like they can't do it. That's not how you help people out. You know it's a a difficult language to learn, as does everyone else. That's why there are all these different methods to conquer it.

mandarin is a hell of a lot closer to english than japanese is, and has a lot of other reasons that it's easier than japanese for english speakers
pretty sure hanzi and tones are the only reasons anyone thinks that mandarin is hard for english speakers, and at least hanzi readings are more consistent than they are in japanese
>>19280763
truth is also helpful to some people
the number of methods discussed has little to do with the difficulty, you'd be better off going to a more common excuse like the number of people who quit or the number of dekinai living in japan

>Pic related are the covers of the 200 new series (2972 volumes, 184.3 GB) added, for anyone who may want to download any of them. Not going to post links here but they can be found in the 2018 June update folder. This will be the last post, everything else will be found using the aforementioned link/code.

It is set up so anyone can host it without changing anything if they don't want to so the sticky site anon should host the site himself instead of linking the mega.
