This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Hey guys I just switched to Yomichan from Rikaisama and I'm having a few issues. I've read through the DJT guide, the yomichan guide and the anki guide, but I can't see to get any answers.
My audio won't import, have the fields lined up and everything, nothing is playing when I hit the green import button from yomichan. I don't even know where the files would go, I looked in the anki collection folder.
Also, when I try to import a sample sentence it's putting the furigana before the kanji, doubling up all the writing for some reason.

General structure in Japanese is modifier+modified. For instance, in 青い空 you have 青い→空 (blue→sky) and get "blue sky."
In your case, 胸の手術 results in 胸の→手術 (chest→surgery), so you get "chest surgery."
You can also see this in your previous example.

[{アメリカの}→大学の]→[学生]
(America→university)→student
"student at an American university"

One function of の is to turn a noun into a noun-modifier. That's why it's useful and things like 川端の本 can have different meanings depending on context. (e.g. you can interpret it as "Kanabata's books" or "books (that) Kanabata (wrote)" and the right interpretation depends on what the sentence is talking about). But sometimes you will also see things like Xに対してのY... You can probably ignore that for now.

I'm stuck at this part "まるで私を 避けているような" how should I interpret this? These are the things I understand:
まるで私を = adjective + noun + object particle
避けているような = Te form + iru continuous action + you appearance or manner + na ending
What is the "you" supposed to mean here? How do I interpret "marude"?
I think she's saying that she will avoid touching this subject until school finish and they return home.

Alright, this is the worst part you're misunderstanding:

>まるで私を避けているような

This means someone is avoiding the person who is having these thoughts.

Also,

>学校が終わったらすぐに帰って
means something like "when we go home right after school ends" (though the "when" at the beginning isn't part of the Japanese).
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22%E7%B5%82%E3%82%8F%E3%81%A3%E3%81%9F%E3%82%89%E3%81%99%E3%81%90%E3%81%AB%22

Lately,
Hotaru's been acting a little weird
When school ends and we go home
It's just like she's avoiding me

I feel like you're trying too hard to have a literal understanding of the Japanese, so you're getting distracted from how each panel leads into the next.

Of course, since this part is internal narration, a couple of the grammatical patterns are nontrivial, so it's natural that you're going to overlook them. But you should try to get a feeling for what they're doing based on the earlier and later stuff that you do actually understand. Notice how Hotaru is basically looking away from here this whole page.

japan is a poor example with how much you can get by with only english (in the areas that foreigners typically move to anyway)
it helps to actually NEED to use the language
regardless, the answer is that mass comprehensible input works, not any mass input. overhearing conversations you grasp absolutely none of and seeing signs on the road you can't read is not comprehensible. a bartender explaining to you in japanese that you need to leave because you're making the other customers uncomfortable is comprehensible and helps move you forward.
but that pales in comparison the volume of comprehensible input you can get through media. it'd be a less shit option when you already know the language well enough that natives can relax and have actual interactions with you instead of struggling to simplify their speech.

people who talk with japanese people constantly are going to be a lot better than people who find their expat or other gaijin circle of english speakers to be the majority of their human interaction

that said its entirely possible and happens quite often that foreigners become able to understand and keep up easily in conversation but still fall back on meekly acceptable ways of communicating when it's their turn

some people dont and literally wow folks at how their japanese might even be better than theirs

think of it like how you might find chinese people who can engage normally and perfectly fine but talk in really bad english but communication isnt totally breaking down and mostly everything is fine

and then theres others who speak much better english despite also growing up chinese and being bilingual but always speaking chinese at home just the same as the previous guy

if you can do what you need to do shit mostly stays the same but because life is life youre still learning new things anyway but thats independent from consciously trying to change a habit

whats the best way of going about kanji learning anon? I'm done with kana for now and want to start kanji. the guide suggested three ways, I cant decide between radicals and learning kanji with vocab, which is better? how helpful are radicals?

What the fuck is this? How retarded are you? You can't read a simple guide in English, yet you want to read the runes? Well, dumb cunt, you're lucky I'm here to break it down for you, although I do wonder if you have actually have zero reading comprehension, making this effort pointless... So, first things first, cut straight to kanji and forget the radical bullshit, with the fastest way of learning the basic 3000 that you need to read a simple children's book being to print them all out and copy them by hand (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz.

Lastly, move to Japan and teach English.

Good luck, cunt.

alright so after about 1300~ words into core I'm starting some trouble telling apart kanji so I bought my friend's KLC for like 10 bucks, how many kanji should I go through each day?

Here is my current studying plan
>Daily anki reps: 60-90 min ( Core + genki)
>Genki book study, 3 times a week with italki teacher (90 minutes)
>Japanese the manga way on days I don't have italki lesson but thursday is my day off so about 3 times a week, usually 1 lesson or till i get bored.
>1 hour of brute force myself into yotsuba (Raw reading) usually every day but not always.
been at this study plan for about 3 months-ish and I guess i average to about 2-3 hours/day. This is already probably pretty intense to add KLC study so I might take it easy and do 10 kanji per day maybe more at the start since i already know the basic ones, thoughts?

I was curious how to look up radicals as a beginner and was surprised to find two websites that just flat out list all the radicals. And there's only 214 of them. I expected a lot more than that because I was under the impression that every "subcomponent" of a kanji was technically a radical.

A radical is the part of a kanji under which it's groups in paper dictionaries. The canonical radical set is the kangxi radicals, which indeed there are only 214 of. There are other radical systems though.

manga is not reading because it requires a higher level of thinking in order to truly comprehend and appreciate. reading is simply looking at a masterpiece--not seeing the entire idea, the concept, with all of its little details in logic. reading is too contextual, thus making "reading manga" an oxymoron. you need to have an intuitive mindset and general thinking in order to see the big picture and not stay focused on the letters--the tiny details, the context. manga is a philosophy, not a science. it requires thought and analysis rather than playing with context and empiricism.

Manga is reading, but you're sort of cheating yourself out of learning more and faster if you choose to read manga instead of more text-heavy stuff.

The more text you are exposed to in general, the faster you will learn.

Similarly, watching Anime is technically listening, but you'd almost be better off looking for something more steeped in reality, made up on-the-fly, not scripted/written out in advance. In this way, you'll start to understand "natural" grammar patterns and flow of conversation.

I'll give you that the sentence constructions seem a bit tricky at first, but take your time to break everything down clause by clause and word by word. Try to understand the bigger picture instead of translating everything literally.
Look at the first part of the first sentence, then the second clause. The sentence ends with ないでしょう so the speaker is pondering somethig, or making a supposition or guess or whatever. Go back to the first clause, and assuming you already know the two verbs, can you recall the function of 限 in this scenario? Now, how does all this relate to 人に平等かつ継続的に供与される天然資源? (かつ is just a conjunction.)
Once you've understood this part, you should have the context needed to understand the rest

>> No.19270586

what is the most important thing in life

I think it's the comfort of leisure time that you can do with whatever you want therefore if we consider using my brain work I should think as little as possible , would I not be well advised to offload the brain using on people who don't have anything better to do anyway and dont realize the price of thinking and time

when I lie on my deathbed I will know I used as much of my time as possible to live a fulfilling life, while you walk into an early grave having used your brain the entire time and what will it have brought you other than regret and sorrow, you are a tool nothing more
think about that

>>学校が終わったらすぐに帰って
>means something like "when we go home right after school ends" (though the "when" at the beginning isn't part of the Japanese).

I read that as "When school ends - she immediately leaves for home, as if she is avoiding me.
this ったらすぐに帰って gives me an impression that going home suguni is an unusual, unexpected behaviour.

Is my take wrong?

what about reading a lot and mining sentences and listening

>> No.19271281

i dont like the term mining it sounds really weird and gay wrt to learning something but otherwise seems reasonable just go on a nihongo expedition and just take everything as it comes ftw

mining isnt a fun word who wants to do unfun things when you can just make them fun and be productive too

plus mining is just getting things

you still gotta learn how to do something with them for it to be of benefit

Great plan besides the mining sentences.

Anki is shit so the less time you use it the better.

No anki > vocab cards > sentence cards > cloze/production garbage
