Komachi's manipulation of distance is subsidiary. She is not very powerful with it. The best she can do is shorten a traveling distance or increase the length of her scythe.

Considering Komachi probably thinks in spectral terms, distance doesn't have to be limited to two points in space. It might as well be the time between two moments in a lifetime.

Sometimes, I think of Komachi's ability in a similar way as that explanation in A Wrinkle in Time, bringing the distance of two points together so Komachi can just sort of "hop" to the other point.

I like to think that she has some mild control over time, so that she could transport the souls in a more effective manner. Of course, not to the extent of Kaguya or Sakuya, but in a more referential and otherworldly sense. Going to the Yama can take hundreds of years, given that the sins of a person are great enough. Of course, it would only take that long because she manipulated the distance between the banks. However, returning from the Yama back to the other bank, she can simply bring the point in time after she's left the horizon closer to "now" and leap over there again. Of course, that would actually mean that the soul she just transported would be in the boat again, so I like to think that one a soul enters the room with the Yama, they're essentially "locked in" that point of time, and they won't be brought back to Komachi. She can't manipulate time in the sense that she can actually move around freely in a moment of time, like Sakuya or Kaguys. Rather, she can move through time to go to a previous point that's already passed, and only in a small-scale.

Just my idea though, before I get completely eaten up for going against canon.

Actually, you might be spot on. Canonically Komachi can ferry both one *and* many at the same time,.

Although I didn't think that deeply into it. Meant more in the sense that everything seems short once it's over, and time always seems short when it's limited.

Well, Shinigami aren't from Japanese mythology.

Shinigami are actually an adoption of the Grim Reaper, who's a bastardization of Cronus (Titan of Harvest, wields a scythe, "reaper") and the Angel of Death (Archangel charged with collecting souls for Judgment, collects souls akin to "reaping" them) from Greek and Christian theologies.

This turned into a somewhat interesting topic after a bad start.
