19213942 No.19213942 [Reply] [Original]

This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

I feel great for once, I'm now at the point where I can finally enjoy consuming compelling content. When I first tried actually reading (hanahira, 1200 words) it was pure hell and I never went past the part where they first get to school. Reading even NHK easy was a pain for a long while, then manga was a pain, then reading actual compelling content (i.e. not stupid yurishit for 14 year olds) was really really bad but now I can finally follow conversation with (JP) subs in real time and only have to pause every few lines to check some word out, for the first time ever it doesn't feel like learning Japanese is just a neverending chore. Maybe I'll try reading Hanahira again because I'm pretty sure I could now breeze right through it, I first have to do my 400 reviews though haha

This is exactly why I advice to skip learning hiragana and katakana because it's basically the baby version of the language, and it's equivalent to learning how to read, write and speak from Tommy Pickles. Then cut straight to kanji, with the fastest way of learning the basic 3000 that you need to read a simple children's book being to print them all out and copy them by hand (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz. Lastly, move to Japan and teach English.

I've always done my new words mixed in with reps and thus I've greatly struggled because I would like to do my reps ASAP (i.e. when I wake up) but finding the time to read and make new cards is rather challenging so they always get postponed until later in the day when I'm not feeling as fresh.

Sure it probably doesn't matter and he probably does the new cards in the morning because all common sense says reviewing 20 new words alone is pretty stupid because you'll never even hit the 10min again timer with that small word count I mean I guess I'll just start doing that (in the morning), not like it really matters

There's a very big difference between "She was trying really hard not to laugh" being translated into "She was really trying not to laugh" and being translated into "She was trying not smile".

Most translations (by number, including all the random garbage translations of tweets and zero-reader web novels) right now are of the latter kind. Basic comprehension errors that anyone with N3-level Japanese would avoid, and/or basic English grammatical mistakes that would've been caught if a single person working on it had even the littlest bit of English fluency.

Besides the awkward grammar though (which most machine translations can actually handle fine since grammar follows fairly specific rules) the last one isn't really THAT bad. Yeah the message is distorted a little bit, but the connotation is still fairly similar, and especially in context of the rest of the scene I don't think the reader really loses much. In my mind imagining someone trying to suppress a smile and suppress a laugh is pretty much the same thing yanno? Just the laugh is a bit of a stronger statement I guess?

I'm looking for a video. A long long time ago (like three months ago) there was a video of a female Japanese school teacher asking one of her students to point out what's wrong in a sentence she wrote down. It was in a some Japanese accent or dialect. The sentence was something along the line of "the teacher is a beautiful woman", and the student jokingly said the "beautiful" part is wrong.

This video is one part of a series of videos teaching that dialect, in a classroom setting. The first video has a guy standing in front of a blackboard. I believe it was how in that accent ている becomes ておらん or something like that.

Anyone knows about this video series? Thank you.

I hate to say this, but IGN Japan puts out some really nice videos as far as intermediate level listening practice goes. These "20 questions" games (of which there are a ton) are REALLY fun to watch and very easy to understand, as long as your vocabulary is up to the task.

Of course, get ready to expand your vocabulary very slightly with new vidya-specific terminology, but this is far better than what we get from IGN in the USA.

AJATT is just a meme/buzzword to sell a method perfected by Antimoon.

Mine/study/grind words and basic grammar until you can receive conversation-level input without pausing every 2 seconds to look up a new word, and then grind specific usage/sentences from there. This, for any language.

If you aren't to this level in 6 months or less, you didn't grind hard enough at the start. You'll see meteoric gains in your understanding at this point, but fewer gains in the total "quantity" of words/grammar items because at this point you are increasing depth of knowledge rather than breadth. Of course, trying to attach hard numbers to this sort of thing is difficult, as everyone will learn different things at different rates.

OFC your initial grind will vary. I can't speak for the effectiveness of Core decks, as I just mined Pokemon and NHK easy news at the start.

Learning 3002 Kanji in 40 Days

I might have the summer of 2018 off and have an obsession with Japan, so I think I will spend a month and a few days learning the Jōyō and the Jinmeiyō Kanji lists. I would be using "The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary" which contains the 3002 Japanese characters.

My goal is literacy in Japanese as I have a library of books from Japan that I purchased while I was stationed there that I have never been able to read. I also plan on moving back to Japan at some point in the future for either work and/or continuing education.

I have seen a number of websites claiming how learning massive amounts of kanji in short periods of time will not lead to long term success. However, I'm just stubborn enough to think it can be done. The worst that could happen is I forget every single kanji that I "thought" that I learned and wasted a month of my life. However, I do like the potential that exists on the reverse side: the ability to FINALLY read and write in the language.

My plan is simple

I will devote 8-12 hours each day just studying the kanji dictionary.

It takes me about 5 minutes to "get" a new kanji in my short term memory.

It takes me under 30 seconds to review/recall a kanji that I previously learned.

I would have to learn about 75 kanji per day to learn all 3k in 40 days.

An 8 hour study shift consists of 480 minutes, if I am able to learn 1 kanji every 5 minutes, I should be able to "learn" 75 kanji in under 6.5 hours. I put the word "learn" in quotation marks due to me having to review several times to get it into my long term memory rather than just my short term memory.

I will use "Pimsleur's graduated-interval recall" approach to spaced repetition to create a review schedule, and eventually use Anki on my iPhone for review after the first 40 days. The intervals for spaced repetition study published in Pimsleur's paper were: 5 seconds, 25 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 5 hours, 1 day, 5 days, 25 days, 4 months, and 2 years.

The study sessions will progress as follows:

Morning - 50 New Kanji

Afternoon - 25 New Kanji

Evening - Review

Day 1 - learn 75 new kanji

Day 2 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 1 kanji

Day 3 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 2 kanji

Day 4 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 3 kanji

Day 5 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 4 kanji

Day 6 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 5 kanji + Day 1 kanji

Day 7 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 6 kanji + Day 2 kanji

Day 8 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 7 kanji + Day 3 kanji

Day 9 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 8 kanji + Day 4 kanji

Day 10-learn 75 new kanji, review Day 9 kanji + Day 5 kanji

...

Day 25 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 24 kanji + Day 20 kanji + Day 1 kanji

Day 26 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 25 kanji + Day 21 kanji + Day 2 kanji

Day 27 - learn 75 new kanji, review Day 26 kanji + Day 22 kanji + Day 3 kanji

etc...

It should take me about 6.5 hours to learn 75 new kanji @ 12 kanji/hour (5 minutes per kanji).

It should take me about 40 minutes to review kanji for the previous day. (30 seconds x 75 kanji).

It should take me another 40 minutes to review the kanji from 5 days ago.

40 minutes to review the kanji from 25 days ago. 2 hours for reviews in total.

I will use Anki to continue reviewing after the 40 day mark.

So that sums up the first 40 days of my kanji study plan, during this time I will also be consuming as much media in Japanese that I can find, but will not use anything too challenging as I want to focus the brunt of my effort on learning the kanji for these first 40 days. After the 40 day mark I will just (hopefully) be doing reviews, which should not take more than 2.5 hours per day.

At this point I hope to have the "alphabet" down well enough to switch to reading books alongside a Japanese tutor. After the 40 day mark I also plan on using the language learning website "iknow" for learning the 6000 most frequently used words in Japan, then eventually switch to tackling more challenging topics that would prepare me for university and/or work in Japan.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations, let me know!

If I am not able to set aside an entire 40 days this summer to solely focus on kanji, I will scale down accordingly. For example, if I only have time to learn 25 per day rather than 75. This change would result in it taking four months to learn the 3002 kanji rather than just 40 days.

I posted in the other thread thinking it was this DJT. Figured it might help someone so I'm copying and pasting from >>19221373

Lurker that stumbled on this thread. I've got a sort of self-study curriculum that is helping me learn about 100-300 japanese kanji compounds a day and RETAINING them. I am a shut in loser that spends about 6 hours a day studying so take it however you'd like.

The long story short is I make a mnemonic for every kana sound revolving around a particular fictional character. For instance: 上智[じょうち]
To remember it, I pictured Dio from JoJo's bizaare adventure sprawled above on the ceiling, waiting to ambush whoever from above. Because he's Dio, he can't help but share his "supreme wisdom". Also he's eating cheese. I know its silly, but 10-70 new compounds an hour that gets retained is no joke.

(another anon not me)>>19214220
Care to stoop down to the level of those who don't know Japanese and explain what makes a kanji difficult with some examples?

The classic examples are:
問, 間, 唾, 睡, 牲, 性, 券, 巻

You get the idea. I've already gone through all 2200 kanji from RTK 1. Working through RTK2 right now.
Forgot to add that because i've gone through all 2200 kanji, those examples I listed very differentiated to my eyes. I don't find myself confusing them with each other at all. Only issues I deal with is when I forget what a specific kanji means.

>>19222047
That's the idea. And I don't have characters for every kanji, just most hiragana. So about 42-45 different mnemonics. For a complete beginner, its amazing how fast you can retain readings by mixing and matching a handful of mnemonics. Even better if you cluster the kanji together like in RTK2. At least that's what it feels like to me right now.

Also memorizing words outside of context isn't learning the language. What exactly is "supreme wisdom"? When is it usually used? etc etc.
You just don't know unless you picked it up from native material somewhere. Just from googling, apparently it's most common use is 上智大学, which is just a name for a college.

"study" term used loosely at this point, I still add about 20 fresh words a day to my flashcard pile, but for the most part just listening to the news/watching shows/reading news while at work constitutes many hours of stuff, in addition to the maybe 30 minutes I dedicate to new flashcards and occasionally reviewing old ones.

At this point, "review" happens by simply encountering the words in the wild.

Let's say you know 話題 and 世話, and you know 社会 and 会長. If you see 会話, you already know how it's pronounced and ALMOST what it means. This is what "learning kanji through vocab" means.

This might seem radically inefficient to you, but the most common several thousand words, for the ones where learning kanji at all helps you learn them, are made of very common and regular kanji, like 時, 上, 物, 会, 感, 理, etc.

You could knock them out of the way with isolated kanji study very easily, but there is no resource that only focuses on the kanji that are the most common (among multiple words) and regular, learning them through words is more reliable and easier.
