Cake has suffered two different scuffs to her faceup both of which I was able to fix with my Warhammer stuff. There was no paint damage just clear coat damage.
Pumpkin arrived with a discoloured nose and chipped clear coat, its mostly fixed but you can still see it.
Cherry has a crack in both arm hinges, she arrived that way as a used doll.
Waffles has two slightly grey lines on the back of her legs. My guess she was sitting on a shelf in a grey outfit, she was also used and arrived like that.
Strawberrys right arm has always been extremely loose, it popped out putting her in that dab for the photo.

I think that's everything, I still love them all though.

Does the Volks JP website have sales often? I was seriously considering getting a DDS back in 2015, and planned out all the parts I wanted, before finding out that Volks US was specifically only for the US and the rest of the world was supposed to import from JP, and JP was out of stock of most of the parts / clothes I was going to get. You might find stuff DD/S that works, but a lot will be too big and not look right.

Some stuff modeled to fit "MSD" dolls will fit, places like Etsy etc if the seller is even half professional will state the model of the doll in the sample photos, and you google the sizes and compare.

MDD stuff fits the 40cm girls nearly perfectly.

Get a Parabox 40cm girl with the head of your choice and enjoy a wide array of diabetes inducing sweetness. The little ones are better anyway.

It's not uncommon. I see plenty of custom faceups do this because they don't have to reshape the eye socket and it's not irreversible if they decide repaint again. I've also seen cosplayers do it because why would you get surgery to play a character for an afternoon?

There's a lot of resin options out there to the international market that are way cheaper as well and a lot of the poorfags shun the company for "elitist prices". Combine that and an apparent general difference in aesthetic preferences between the two areas and it's pretty obvious as to why other companies have a big market outside of Japan.

If you ever get the chance to see DoA's marketplace you'll understand why. The western (European especially) markets value low price and ~OOAK~ over a traditional, conventional resin ball-jointed doll which Volks tend to be. Quality is not their main concern. The prevelance of recasts points to the same cinclusion.

The Japanese market values authenticity and innate quality which is why Volks does well there.

if she's 1/4 you can find some furniture that's close enough in scale to pass for things like American girl dolls or 16 inch dollhouses. You can check out any local toystore before trying to build it from the ground up.

Then, once you have it, you can modify it- you can paint it, add cushions/ fabric, shorten/lengthen the legs to make it fit better, etc. I'd suggest doing this over say, buying some balsa wood and trying to make it from scratch unless you have experience.

I'm not writing this to discourage you, but to give you some solid advice so you don't sink money into half a project and lose motivation - if you want to make anything nice out of wood you will require a significant amount of tools and materials which you most likely don't have already. A router, jigsaw, drop saw or circular saw, files, belt and disc sanders, hand sanding materials, varnishes, paints and lacquers, brushes rollers and solvents, glues and fixings - the list goes on. You'll need a steady hand and a lot of patience.

You can buy all these and very quickly gain basic skills in using them to make half-decent miniatures for your dolls. You'll probably find it very satisfying to make your own stuff exactly as you want it. But you'll fail a lot and spend a lot of money re-buying materials.

I'm going down this path at the moment - building minature furniture for my dolls. $500 of tools and equipment later and I'm still not prepared to show any of it to this thread.

I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just making sure you understand it's a whole lot more involved a pursuit than you might think and it requires a lot more than a passing interest.

I'm not writing this to discourage you, but to give you some solid advice so you don't sink money into half a project and lose motivation - if you want to make anything nice you will require a significant amount of tools and materials which you most likely don't have already. Some clay, some epoxy, files, sculpting tools sandpaper, hand sanding materials, paints and lacquers, paintbrushes, glues and fixings - the list goes on. You'll need a steady hand and a lot of patience.

You can buy all these and very quickly gain basic skills in using them to make half-decent accessories and mods for your dolls. You'll probably find it very satisfying to make your own stuff exactly as you want it. But you'll fail a lot and spend a lot of money re-buying materials.

'm going down this path at the moment - building minature furniture for my dolls. $500 of tools and equipment later and I'm still not prepared to show any of it to this thread.

I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just making sure you understand it's a whole lot more involved a pursuit than you might think and it requires a lot more than a passing interest.

If you don't have a specific idea in mind there are actually companies that sell magnetic resin horns. Resinsoul for example will make them in a huge variety of colors. I'd say if you want to try doing faceups, get a practice head and go to town. Don't be afraid to wipe it clean or fuck up. Just get a can of MSC, an adequate face mask/ventilator (follow safety precautions please and spray outside), grab some watercolor pencils or acrylics and a thin tipped brush, and try it out. Spray the head before painting/drawing on the head to prevent staining. If you don't want to spend a lot on a practice head Parabox has blank heads for like 2000 yen. Good luck and congrats on your dollies.

As someone who prefers custom heads I have to point out that you can commission heads from faceup artists and thus have a say on how the head gets painted even if you don't do the painting yourself.

But I do of course agree that my custom dolls aren't inherently better than character dolls.
