Everyone always talks about what threads they hate and want to get rid of, but there's never any discussion of what threads we'd like to see instead.

Personally, I'd like to see more threads like the "Generational Gap in Otaku Culture" and the "Akihabara Mass Murder incident 10th anniversary" threads. I guess what I mean is I'd like more discussion about otaku culture itself. I also really like the Comiket/Reitaisai threads we always have, and I wish there were more doujin events to have threads for (is garage kits otaku culture? could we have a Wonder Festival thread?).

I think it's hard to come up with topics I'd like to see more of because otaku culture is such a broad topic. The only other board I visit is /m/, which is a very specific topic.

>> No.19180585

too many large topics taking up all the oxygen. small niche stuff doesn't have room to breathe and gets squeezed to death by the larger and continual threads. moot was obsessed with keeping everything on /b/ and never adding new boards but there's so much room for them. otaku culture could be split into 3d, 2d, and niche. they could add asian culture board and throw idols there along with kpop/asian drama that's everywhere. lots of options but there's issues with management or direction regarding how to sort things. the best boards are the smaller ones so why the obsession for mega boards filled with generals? i think this is a cultural issue and mode of thought so we won't see any changes to it sadly.

>> No.19181206

My personal opinion is that metathreads are shit and I want you to die

>> No.19181265

Literally the only thing that needs to happen is for all those threads about 3D idols and JAV to have a home in another board. Like /idol/ for 3D idols and celebrities or something like that. As soon as that happens /jp/ will be back to how it was always meant to be, yes, and I do mean that all the generals and threads you dislike are perfectly fine in here.
On that note, people should also make a better effort at swatting out normalfags who manage to sneaking in here. /jp/ has always been a perverted board due the nature of otaku culture in general, but recently I've seen far too many posts that feel genuinely honest condemning sexualization of arbitrary characters, most likely following a recent trend among normalfag otaku communities. That kind of shit doesn't belong in here.

>> No.19181557

>>19180556
I would like more people to produce OC.
The reason why Otaku culture is a thing in the first place IS OC.
Its very essence is trading OC with each other.
Basically if we have good OC, then /jp/ can become strong and fun.
Somehow the western world doesn't do much OC for some reason.

Apart from that Idol threads and porn just have to go.

>> No.19182546

>>19181557
The western world does lots of OC. The problem is how to avoid it belonging to /co/, /vg/(oelvn), or /aco/.

>>19180556
>there's never any discussion of what threads we'd like to see instead.
I'd like to see everything that was shunted to /vg/ back. Namely anything relating to doujin games or the actual gameplay of popular japanese series instead of just wanking over the seiyuu.

I think the kinds of things you mentioned are only okay in moderation. /jp/ really was just meant to hold anything about anime otaku media that wasn't anime or manga, meaning figurines and other goods, vns, light novels, technically things like Kancolle belong here. I would say anime mmos do even though they're mostly made by Koreans. (since being mostly animated by Koreans doesn't make something not anime) I think discussion of the real world Japan, including things like conventions are a bit outside of /jp/'s scope. There's nothing wrong with talking about otaku themselves but /jp/ is really "a board about things otaku consume" not "a board about otaku and their lives" (nor a board about "Japanese media in general" or "Japanese culture and lifestyle").

There really could stand to be an asian media board, not just for idols and korean idols but for dramas and movies and tokusatsu and gaki and that show about that guy playing video games. Of course, there could also just be a push for /tv/ and /mu/ to get over themselves and accept Japanese stuff there. 4chan itself used to be otaku culture, no reason to keep supporting it all being crammed into a few boards.

But posting downloads from and images of conventions is probably fine as long as it's not too heavily a cosplay focus, although I don't really think there is really enough interest in most events since they largely seem to be about doujinshi which could be in /h/ or /a/. But nonetheless nothing's stopping anyone from making a thread about them. That's probably what I want to see most- people not afraid to make threads that aren't shitposts. Right now people just respond to threads they don't like by making threads nobody likes. I'd also like to see more artist discussion. If you're gonna dump images, at least dump them of a specific artist and discuss their works/tastes/style/habits or talk about artists in some more general way (who draws the best lolis, who makes interesting non-h doujin, etc) Discussion of net characters would be nice too. The most you get is some occasional OStan or nijura maid dump thread, and the yukkuri threads. The thing I miss the most is the time where you could talk about specific games. People nowadays just stick in their general and there are hardly any wandering /jp/sies to see your game thread and talk about it/become interested. The most you get is just recommendation threads and threads about some /vn/ popular with /v/. Hopefully general posters will all move to discord or something.

In general I'd like to see more discussion instead of dumps. /jp/ suffers as much from lack of content as it does from general posters leaking in off board habits. It also lacks a sense of culture it was starting to develop too. And I don't mean the shitposting from years ago, but stuff like the various characters that spawned independently of the rest of 4chan. While the other boards were making board tans or whatever, /jp/ was making characters out of its mods and janitors and spambots. There was also that otaku self depreciation type thing in /jp/ related humor, especially involving the idea of a /jp/ communal mansion or meetup. Although that was kinda tied in a bit with the stuff that left to /r9k/.
in retrospect, it's kind of strange /jp/ posters never developed an identity in the sense of representing themselves as differently from blank faced general 4chan anons. Then again, I can't think of a group that did that wasn't also complete cancer, way back even to the afro guys. Maybe /jp/ was just made up of all the old anons.

I'd say it was the continuous three-year tidal wave of shitposting that helped drive off any sense of community, but if you think that declining OC was the cause of the problem rather than a symptom you're entitled to your assessment. I guess in some ways it happened to every board.

I hate meta threads.
Do you want to know why?

They virtually solve absolutely nothing.
We can talk and complain all we want, nothing will change. Any and all talk about what might help the boards which have these threads are seemingly ignored, It is lost in the dust. It will be like any other thread on the board. Posted in and forgotten only for small subjects that will be beaten to death and trampled over as things continue the way they are.
Self moderation? Yeah. Works. Barely.
Unless it gets an obscene amount of reports or breaks a rule, it isn't leaving. And there isn't anything you can do about it. It all remains the same.
Why the fuck do we have these threads to "make things better" if nothing happens. Nothing changes. It's all seemingly worthless and a waste of time. Nothing changes! One thread comes, and it goes. You say the same thing and you leave. It all still heads the same path while also losing what made that board unique.
Waaaaa,, remove this thread please. It's a problem
No thanks. You better bitch hard because it isn't going.
"x doesn't belong here"
"why is this allowed?"
"why do threads devolve into meta and upsetting arguments?"
There is no more unity. Nobody agrees on anything in general.
/jp/ at this point is split, and it should be no surprise that it's split between "3DPD shouldn't be here;generals shouldn't be here" "y is on another board/y is on so many boards, so why is it here" and "this (/jp/) is the touhou board. it belings to touhou"
No matter how much we whine or speak among ourselves and see what can be done to make things better and make posters happier to be here, it won't change. This changes nothing. We can do nothing.

"More OC please"
Sorry, OC isn't allowed. Go to the general and be flooded out like a piece of shit.
"Original threads please"
Sorry, this "thread has been pruned or deleted"
"Stop doing x."
"Make me, bitch. *shitposts harder*"

It is refreshing to see some unique threads pop up because the same shit is on the front page 24/7.
There is no variety. People rarely listen anymore. A lot can be fixed by listening.

People also only take hints about what is and isn't allowed by reaction.
If people generally hate it, the same subject is less likely to show up again. Things only become allowed if they're allowed in small batches. The batch becomes larger as people find no issue in it being a smaller majority. The more people ignore it, the larger it becomes. All until it floods everything out.
"Filter shit you don't like"
My ass. Ignoring things doesn't mean it isn't there. It is only a matter of time before it becomes all you see.

>Although that was kinda tied in a bit with the stuff that left to /r9k/.
/r9k/ has become one of the staunchest anti-Japanese culture boards on 4chan in the past two years. Anything /jp/ related there withers and dies, and should be imported provided its users don't bring in additional robots: /qa/ and /bant/ are good examples of what happens when you let them immigrate into a board unrestricted.
