Rhythm games require a very specific skillset and the results in improving over time varies greatly from person to person. There are examples of people playing regularly and still being shit and vice verse.

The only reasonable advice for anyone starting out in any rhythm game is to just play regularly and from time to time bang your head against songs that are harder than the ones you can currently clear.
By the nature of the genre the only way to improve is brute force and using an appropriate playing technique.

Literally never happens. Skill level from other games translating to IIDX is rather poor compared to the inverse. Even pop'n players struggle to translate their skills into IIDX and virtually every other person who careers a non-IIDX game are pretty much hopeless except MAYBE DM players, and it's doubly bad for DDR/PIU/ITG players. However, even a 10dan can start playing mid to late-30s in pop'n in a day or two and you pretty much start at level 14 in SDVX.

Playing on DS4 is better solely because of the better D-pad and symmetrical grip.
Though left Joycon buttons are better than dpad for such games their size is too small and asymmetrical position isn't the best. Pro controller dpad is terrible because of phantom presses when you are mashing it (especially if yours is from first batches) but I prefer it to joycon because of the size and better tactile feedback.
Anyway, I bought Swtich version just because of possible portability and more varied controls with the touchscreen.
