This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games. If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Completely raw, no subs of any kind. You probably wont understand shit, but that's okay. Just watch like you normally do and focus on trying to recognize words rather than understanding.

There will be a lot you wont understand. It'll be frustrating and you'll be inclined to try and and try again until you understand 100%. Don't do that, it will be a demotivating grind. Just accept not being able to understand stuff. You can always come back when you're better.

As for i+1. It basically means a sentence you understand (i), but you learned something new (+1). For example a a sentence you understood but had a new word (or a word you already knew, but a different meaning) or grammar pattern, ect...

As for the source. Do something you enjoy. If you enjoy reading japanese news, read it. If you don't, then don't. It's that simple.

Do this daily for about 3-5 years.

Non sequitur. He's a scumbag but that doesn't automatically mean everything he says is opposite reality. This idiotic gut reaction is why people should stop using the term AJATT, it's not like anything he ever wrote is worth reading. But the general concept of mass input that people associate with the term is good, and AJATT was never a rigorous and detailed program in the first place so it happens to be essentially synonymous.

I don't remember hearing that. Matt says in one of the recent videos to watch something where you could understand what is going on without audio. If either of them said what you said, that was fucking stupid of them.

Here's a video of Krashen giving a demonstration of comprehensible input with zero language knowledge. Skip to 3:20.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiTsduRreug

It doesn't have to be that hand-holding, but you have to be able to pick up words if not sentences where even if you didn't know anything about them you are at least 75% confident on exactly what it meant. It's fine if there are other things that go over your head, but if there is NOTHING you understood, you are wasting your time.

>They all started out this way.
No they didn't. Dunno about the other dude but Matt took Japanese in school. If you're going to devote thousands of hours of your life to someone's advice, you should probably devote more time to actually hearing their story first so you don't make assumptions about what they actually did. I lean towards supporting some of what Matt advocates, but distinguish between what he actually did and what he just thinks is a good idea, and get a better understanding of what he actually means by what he says.

But even if you're too much of a beginner for there to be decent comprehensible listening material it's still a good idea to listen even if it's uncomprehensible.

If you've never heard Japanese before it's a good idea to listen to get used to the sounds in japanese.

If this is your first day trying to learn Japanese but you've been watching english subbed anime for years, it's still better to watch raws even if you can only catch a few words here and there.
>But it's a waste of time
You're gonna watch it anyway, might as well do it raw.

How does /djt/ feel about speaking to natives as a beginner/intermediate? I'm currently upper N4/lower N3 area. I am in Japan right now and I really am realizing the extent of my abilities and how abruptly they drop off. Luckily I have made an amazing Japanese friend who is the nicest dude I have ever met. Goes out of his way all the time to help me with anything like finding fun places to go, buying tickets for the trains, showing me the train system and how it works, introducing to me to cultural aspects and so on.

Needless to say, talking to anyone besides him is usually very rough. I have a lot of trouble understanding cashiers and such and feel like I might as well have learning the most common 100 words (or even 50) instead of the 3-3500 that I already know (with about 500 kanji). People very rarely actually speak slower when you ask them to, instead often reverting immediately to broken English, thus taking away the ability to practice Japanese. I assume this is pretty normal for only studying a year but it is still somewhat aggravating. I assume by the end of my trip, my listening will be about 10 times better (I feel like I jumped in listening from N5 to N4 in only 4 days of being here) and things will be much smoother overall.

Do you consider a word "comprehended" if you know the meaning but not the pronunciation. Like, if you're reading along in a Japanese text of your choosing, and upon seeing a kanji word, thanks to the context and your previous understanding of/experience with the kanji used, you recognize with a high level of certainty what that word MUST mean, even though you're not sure of the 読み方.
A nice, neat example, 二足でこちらに向かってくるように見えるけど、これ後足を広げてるんだね。 Say someone does not know the pronunciation for 二足(is it にあと?ふたあと?ふたそく??) or 後足(あとあし?あとそく?ごそく??), but due to familiarity with all kanji involved, and perhaps assistance from other context, they quickly recognize the words must mean "two legs" and "hind legs".
Do you consider that word comprehended in that context and feel okay with moving on through the text? Or do you think "well I still don't really KNOW that word" and feel compelled to study the reading for your "understanding" to be "complete"? How relevant is knowing the pronunciation of every single word, to reading comprehension?

>Because it is totally impossible for anyone to know vocabulary and kanji before it shows up in school.
Plenty of children learn plenty of words outside coursework, but they learn a lot of words in coursework too. It's silly to assume a particular method is more efficient just because it's a method employed by natives, was my point.

Transitive: needs a direct object to complete its meaning
Intransitive: has complete meaning on its own

Examples:
Love (transitive): "I loved" would be an incomplete sentence, you need to add a direct object like in "I love apples"

Cry (intransitive): "I cried" is a complete sentence, you don't need a direct object to complete it.

Again, you don't have to do it, your brain is good enough at recognizing patterns that you will eventually learn what sounds natural and what doesn't but it does help, specially at the beginning.

Without knowing the group of the verb, you can't really guess. Note that this is also true for the inverse step : i.e. you cannot, simply from the dictionary form guess what is the ます-form nor the て-form.

From there, look for go-dan (五段) or ichi-dan (一段) in your dictionary. During my studies, my teacher also reffered to them as "strong" and "weak" verbs respectively.

Then, it is pretty simple :

- For godan:
1. Remove the ます stem
2. Take the last syllable of your verb, before the ます stem.
3. Change it to the "u" sound of the same line. (Be careful, the "u" sound of the "t" line is つ and not テゥ !).

- For ichidan:
1. Remove the ます stem
2. Add る

So now, the real question is, in which category does your verb fall in ?

- If the last syllabe of the dictionary form (a.k.a. the one just before your ます stem) is a "e" syllabe, it is ichidan. See for example, 食べる, 教える, 負ける...
- If your verb has only one syllabe (excluding the ます stem) it is also ichidan ! For example 見る/見ます、着る/着ます. Be careful, some of this verbs have false friends : they have the same dictionary form but are actually godan. Check for example 着る and 切る/切ります.
- If your verb ends with an i vowel, it is most often a godan, see 飲む/飲みます, 書く/書きます, 勝つ/勝ちます. However, you really need to memorize the exceptions to this rule : some are ichidan, like 起きる/起きます, 降りる/降ります, 借りる/借ります
- There are a few exceptions to this rule, most notably :
1. する/します
2. 来る/来ます

Does the word "comprehensible" in the phrase "comprehensible input" mean nothing to you two? Sheesh. If you can't understand anything, yeah you're wasting your time. You have to build up starting from what you can comprehend, which at the start is piecing together subtitles or lines in manga/VNs, not just blasting pure speech.

It has nothing to do with how different the language is, every language I know anything of has transitive and intransitive verbs, you could just say one of them needs a target. Linguistic terms are a huge fucking circle jerk and a pseudoscience. The existence of "adverbs" is the perfect example of how fucking ridiculous it is. Look at this piece of shit:

>An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective, another adverb, determiner, noun phrase, clause, or sentence. Adverbs typically express manner, place, time, frequency, degree, level of certainty, etc., answering questions such as how?, in what way?, when?, where?, and to what extent?. This function is called the adverbial function, and may be realized by single words (adverbs) or by multi-word expressions (adverbial phrases and adverbial clauses).

It's a ridiculous fucking catch-all term for words have literally nothing in common. Most languages don't even follow their own rules, out of all 7 languages I've dabbled in Swedish for one had by far the most exceptions to every rule (fucking vilja, vill, ville, velat), to the point where the rules didn't in any way EVER matter words in each and every "conjugation class" have irregular forms that you more or less had to memorize every word by exposure anyway to be 100% sure. There's absolutely no use in coming up with these batshit crazy, arbitrary, useless rules when the languages themselves don't respect them. The people that come up with this are the same ones that live off researching and writing abhorrent trash like "A predicate nominative is a noun or pronoun which follows the verb and describes or renames the subject. It is another way of naming the subject. It follows a linking verb."
It's a fucking scam.

Me? I'm Russian.

When I wake up I spend as much time as needed to complete all due reviews in Anki. Then I skim over the next 25 kanji in RTK I'll be learning that day. I spend an hour trying to initially learn and visualize the story for each new kanji which can take anywhere from 2-4 minutes for each. I usually steal the story from koohii but sometimes I modify it, and sometimes just make up my own. Then I drill the Kanji for another hour in Anki with the keyword on the front and the Kanji+story on the back. If I can't remember the Kanji+story for a keyword I write out the Kanji and try to visualize the story again. The entire process usually takes 2-3 hours.

no source but what i've heard a few times is that koreans have an easier time with it because the grammar is more intuitive to them, in spite of koreans not knowing very much kanji. chinese grammar is supposedly has more in common with english and is also real fuckin simple. i know fairly little about specifics though.
based on that, i think chinese have an easier time guessing word meanings, but it's no easier for them to learn the readings and grammar to become actually competent. oh, and japanese kanji are either traditional or simplified differently, so that's a small issue for chinese natives that don't know traditional chinese. they have more experience learning kanji though, so i suppose that's a small benefit.

I'm doing RTK because I want to be able to write from memory because I'm a fuckin loser. My counterargument to waiting a few years is that it's annoying enough to take time out of my Japanese practice for this shit when I'm shit at the language, I think I'll be even less inclined to set aside time for it when I'm able to challenge myself with more interesting material. I do feel that it has made me pick up words using the kanji faster than otherwise, whether it's actually time-efficient or not, and if that's placebo effect it's still feels better to struggle with forgetting words less. I also mix up kanji far less than when I tried to learn vocab before RTK, which is something that even if I quit now I think was worth getting better at without suffering through a bunch of leech vocab cards.

On one hand I think I'm past the point where familiarizing myself with kanji is in itself beneficial to my ability to distinguish them and pick up new ones. On the other, I'm past 1500, and I don't like quitting. I might stop at 2k and see if I still want to do RTK3 after a couple months without it.

Either of the two fonts in the COR that has "kyoukasho" in the name, which means textbook and is essentially a version of regular script that lacks typographic changes that do not appear in handwriting. >During the Edo period of Japanese history, public displays of fireworks (hana-bi, lit. "flower-fire") gradually became more and more popular. As their popularity grew, the displays became increasingly elaborate. One fireworks factory in particular, the Tamaya clan, dominated the industry.

>In 1810, a division occurred within the Tamaya, and a spinoff group, the Kagiya, was formed. As a result of the rivalry between the two groups, annual fireworks "battles" were staged, and onlookers would cheer the rival groups, yelling their names. This practice, calling "Tamayaaa!" and "Kagiyaaa!", has become the standard Japanese way of expressing delight at a particularly excellent fireworks display.

Just learn vocab through anki while going through a grammar book and then start reading after 1000-1500 words. RTK is for those that are too stupid to remember kanji otherwise. You have an advantage in that there are a lot of Chinese loan words in Japanese and that you (presumably) are more adept at remembering kanji than a westerner would be starting out.

>> No.19164804

>>19164780
You seem to be confusing anki with a method, anki is a tool that can be used for any method/resource, people who do RTK usually do it with anki too. RTK doesn't teach you pronunciation, except RTK2 which even most people who endorse RTK don't recommend. Just learn words.

Those two don't do remotely the same thing, so picking one over the other makes no sense.
If you're Chinese then RTK likely has no use for you. It's debatable how much use it has for English speakers.

>> No.19164833

>>19164785
People tend to answer this question both ways. I think focusing on one meaning is fine, but the card should make it clear which meaning you're supposed to recall, not your memory of the first place you found it. Use a sentence fragment that only makes sense with one meaning. It's still not a sentence card, it's just minimal context for disambiguation, like 一つ instead of 一, though in this case for meaning too. Then if you run into the same word using a different definition, you can make a second card for that that has a different front.
So in short, wait until you see it again, but make a better card when you do.

>> No.19164859

I find that debate desu. Everytime I see a kanji it reminds me of the Chinese pronunciation and it takes a second to get it out of my head. For example, 左 and 右. I could not for the life of me get it right unless I first translate it from English to Chinese, the to Japanese. Then again I'm probably autistic, so yeah.
I agree that I probably already know more kanji than non Chinese.

Anime is babby listening practice.
The sound is always clear, because VAs speak right into the mic in a recording studio.
Movies and doramas are the shit. Everything the actors say is unintelligible mumbling, even worse than in real life. Now THAT will test your listening skills and vocabulary.

True for basically every language. I can watch any cartoon in English easily, but I still need subtitles for some movies, especially if Ryan Gosling is starring (apparently it's too much work for him to open his mouth when speaking).

you misunderstand the purpose. "forums and other stuff" for language learning exist for one purpose: wasting time but feeling like you're doing something related to learning the language so it's okay. if djt disappeared people might actually be forced to consume some fuckin japanese, and whether or not that would be good for them, it's not what they want. they're capable of doing that already and they choose not to.
in other words, djt is for dekinai, it was a mistake to think that dekiru even come here.
good luck by the way, genuinely. i don't know if matt's full of shit or not, but it can't hurt (much) to try, and even if it's inefficient you'll learn more japanese than being here.

Of course nobody can dispute that, because it's obvious. People shit on him because he puts on airs and calls it "AJATT" (which is a great name, and probably the only reason people listen to him), instead of just saying what it is: More input and immersion. I know he didn't "create" AJATT or anything, but it's a pointless branding of an oversimplification of what it takes to learn a language, presented in such a way as to suggest that it's the be-all end-all solution. He belittles anyone that doesn't study in the exact same way as him, and thinks that having learned Japanese a particular way means all other methods are inferior. He sells it like snake oil, and dekinais lap it up and give him money on Patreon.
He's fine at Japanese, and good for him, but he's not the all-knowing guru he makes himself out to be.

there are plenty of people who would and do argue against it
>which is a great name
no it's not, and he would look like less of a clown if he distanced himself from khatz
>an oversimplification of what it takes to learn a language
i disagree, people overcomplicate what it takes to learn a language and do lots of useless shit that they think is necessary or a magical shortcut instead of, you know, exposing themselves to japanese that is slightly above their level and dealing with the struggles until the struggles become less frequent and it's time to push forward again
>presented in such a way as to suggest that it's the be-all end-all solution
in fairness, the general idea kind of is the be-all end-all solution. i think most of the debatable suggestions he admits are his take on it, and not central to the idea.
>He belittles anyone that doesn't study in the exact same way as him
he has a bit of an obnoxious manchild attitude and likes to use embarrassing terms like blue-pilled, but he feels bad about shitting on people and has become slightly more reserved in that area. though he does think he's got it all down to a formula and exaggerates how well his formula has been tested.
>having learned Japanese a particular way
the only thing out of his method that he actually did himself is the part of it that isn't up for debate: lots of japanese
>He sells it like snake oil
welcome to youtube/patreon/language-learning/internet/capitalism/life, you're here until you die, enjoy your stay

tl;dr: he's a bit full of shit but he has more of it right than the majority of people who make videos or learning guides or whatever the fuck. there are far worse people you could listen to.

isn't there already a site that does this? seems like every other learning service: it's a way to get money from perma-beginners who think they can buy an easy fun pre-made path to fluency. you're not going to find a way to cheat past the uncomfortable feeling of reading and listening to things that are hard for you. video bites sound like they would kill a lot of the context that helps you figure things out.
