There are so many choices. I stumbled upon Ciel in the first two days by pure chance and took three or four Ciel scenes. Got a ring. I am still in the first route, right?

I always sided with Arcueid because she seemed nice and I wanted to help. I have literally no ideas where I am in the overall narrative.

Out of those three, probably Ciel's route. I can't see Akiha as anything other than a sister to Shiki, and the additional Roa lore puts Ciel's route just barely above Arc's. Arc is still my favorite heroine of the three, though.

I preferred Shiki's relationship with Ciel. It started out with her just trying to find the best time to kill him, but when it came right down to it, he accepted her decision but she couldn't go through with it.

Re-reading just makes it even more obvious; the first time he meets her, she already knows that he's the new Roa. At that point, she just needs to stay close to him so she can end it all once Roa awakens, but in doing so falls in love with him. She literally gives up her one dream for his sake.

Tsukihime's structure was amazing in regards to its juxtaposition of living, death, and eternity.

The entire point of Tsukihime and F/SN are the characters, though. The "vampire loose in the city" and "the holy grail war" are the backdrops for the characters to interact. Sure, you have the "final boss", but even that is misleading. F/SN's final scenes are just ways for Shirou to affirm his convictions or deny them in favor of something he loves. The story isn't, in the end, about beating Gil, kicking Kotomine's ass, or beating Angry Mainyu: All the World's Evil. It's about the events that occurred and how everyone is going to live as they're changed by them, and what kind of person Shirou is going to be.

Same with Tsukihime. Roa is just a way for Arc and Ciel to face who they are and move on. SHIKI makes you have to face Akiha's true nature, or the culmination of what you've learned about Hisui and Kohaku. Everything is just what you learn from interacting with the main cast. The backstory itself is almost entirely caught up in the character interactions of the Far Side path of Tsukihime. You can't advance without learning about and understanding the entire tragic story of the Tohno household, more so than Ciel or Arc make you understand about Elesia's past or Arcueid's fall from grace.

Shiki does start feeling an attraction to Arcueid soon after helping her with Nrvnqsr Chaos, which he does recognize but has a hard time admitting until their relationship develops further, and it does give him an interesting perspective when he sees into Roa’s soul and finds out his initial feelings of Arcueid, leading Shiki to ponder what would have happened if someone had just explained to Roa that his feelings were actually love. Interestingly though, despite these differing viewpoints, at the near end of Ciel’s good ending we see the only scene where we get to see Roa’s thoughts on finally dying for real and he simply says that nothing is interesting at all even all the history of his reincarnations represented in a large book before disappearing. It gets you to wonder, did he reach the same conclusion Shiki did (or a similar one) about death or was he simply giving up and acknowledging that he couldn’t surpass death in the end?
