19011096 No.19011096 [Reply] [Original]

Since early May of 2018. Something changed on Nico Nico Douga, and not in a good way. I have an optical fibre connection. Videos don't load entirely anymore. Instead, they load by segments. My connection can go up to 200Mbps. Nico downloads at a whopping not even close to 2Mbps and even manages to stutter while loading segments. This makes a rather painful watching experience now.

The worst part? You guessed it. The way it retrieves the video file completely changed again. Instead of one file easily findable using the browser's console, now you have a playlist leading to multiple dozens of segments, making it incredibly tedious to download and merge.

Three questions now. Why do we have to be IT experts just to download a damn video from Nico Nico now? Does anyone know an efficient method to download all segments and merge them with least possible effort? What could be a valid reason for that change?

I'm pretty sure no existing tool will deal with that new streaming format, hence my questions. Currently trying the latest youtube-dl which seems to begin the download fine then craps out with a 403 error because it was enable to renew its download ticket.

Okay, video-download.co + DownloadThemAll did the trick for a particular 330MB 1080p video. Problem is you have to have an older version of Firefox as the add-on doesn't isn't compatible anymore with the new add-on system (his author seems to be slow to catch on). Unless some alternatives exist. DTA allowed me to reach 4-5MBps on average which isn't "too bad".

Thank you for your input and help.

Here's a small one. 720p max. Even video-download.co craps on this one, as it can't even retrieve all the available resolutions (360p max) and is too slow for this one in my case:
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm33189274

A second example. 1080p max, quite long. Again, only 360p available through video-download.co:
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm33172624

The main problem is that 2-minute long tickets which complicates things, even when using DTA (if speed is too slow, it's fried).

>> No.19011706

>>19011558
To my knowledge there's no such things as premium resolutions. Only economy modes are accessible when logged out. AFAIK you don't need to be premium to be able to access 1080p.

In the meantime, I found a temporary workaround by switching back to the Flash player. This player still retrieves the old non-segmented file, but within an FLV container instead of MP4. This workaround works up to 720p. Also, that might be a better option for those who aren't using a VPN (the new segmented system stutters each time a segment has to be downloaded).

Also, the Nicofox add-on is still able to download the 100MB older style variant (prior to the 1.5GB upgrade). This variant automatically generates a low-quality 540p 100MB file if source is above 100MB or matches the source upload if source filesize is below 100MB.

>> No.19011768

What's different exactly? I can still download the mp4 files opening them from adblock and saving them.

>> No.19011774

I think and/or hope that people who care about Nicovideo will come up with an updated downloader script. I think I could do it, if I really put my mind to it, but I haven't put my mind to anything in years.

My guess is that it was implemented as part of letting non-premium users (and logged out users) skip to anywhere on the video and is for the purpose of saving bandwith.

>> No.19011821

>>19011774
What player are you using? The HTML5 player doesn't give you access to an unsegmented MP4 anymore. Unless a screenshot proves me wrong.

Only older videos prior to the 1.5GB upgrade still retrieve an unsegmented file (the 100Mb one which was also the source upload).

Indeed, when loading the older Flash player, I get my non-segmented "nicovideo-sm33189274_bff7454b8c645591b50c25f9b5d47852ffc51a3f4ab1010e09d178ee99a51bd7" instantly and it downloads fine with DTA.

>> No.19013078

Back again. The https://video-download.co + DTA combination seems to work again, offering all resolution variants this time, even for the videos that failed previously (srsly?). sm33189274 did download in its glorious 1080p60 quality (even though I'm not into that kind of yukkuri-voiced stuff, I just used it as a test) and I didn't get the "403 forbidden" error because it managed to download in less than 2 minutes with speed peaks at 10MBytes/s. It even worked with older videos posted before the 3GB+1080p upgrade (but after the 1.5GB one).

However, it still can fail. On some cases, the DL speed drops significantly making the download last more than 2 minutes and thus fail. Another workaround I found is pausing then resuming (Ctrl+P then Ctrl+R with the DL manager opened) the download when this occurs. The DL speed goes up again and helps reducing remaining time before the DL ticket expires.

Just tested out JDownloader 2 and it indeed works, even during economy hours if your account is Premium (http://video-download.co/ can't retrieve all resolutions during economy hours because you can't log in, it all works by itself). Indeed you have to add your Nico Nico account to it (Settings -> Account manager -> Add -> Choose a Hoster, enter "http://www.nicovideo.jp" -> enter your email address account into Name -> enter your password into Password).

For those who aren't familiar, after adding your nicovideo.jp account, go to the LinkGrabber tab then add your video link. The link will be added to the list. Right click on the corresponding entry then click "Start downloads".

There's a catch though. Since nicovideo.jp limits your download time to 2 minutes, you have to de-activate then re-activate your download each 1 and a half or 2 minutes in order to avoid your download abruptly stopping. Unless someone here has an automated way of doing so.

Also, you can increase the maximum number of incoming connexions to whatever number you want it seems, and it will increase your download speed (and possibly make your downloads last less than 2 minutes).

To all who offered help or suggestions, thank you very much. It appears indeed that VideoDownloadHelper (latest version, with the companion installed) and jDownloader 2 will do the job. It looks like many download managers know how to handle segmented streams already.

With VDH you just have to let the video tab open but it will remain rather slow.

With jDownloader, you'll have to enter your Nico credentials into the Account manager and max out the number of incoming connections to 20 (it can't go beyond it seems). With a fast internet connection, you'll get a download speed on Nico that is unheard of. However, de-activating then re-activating the download might be necessary from time to time every 2 minutes (a bit less preferably), if it's a long 1080p video and in order to avoid the dreaded 403 error due to the 2-minute ticket expiring.

I hope Nico Nico won't undergo deeper changes than that (like Bilibili).

Just think about how long it took for nicovideo to finally offer an alternative to the practically discontinued Flash Player.

And let's not talk about "Premium". It's fucking garbage, and ruins the site.
Sure, they are not in a position like YouTube that can capitalize on user data, but that's no excuse to throw regular users out of streams in order to make them pay.
Block them entirely or don't do it at all. Anything else is not honest.

Well that's funny, and interesting too. I've just discovered that Nico still serves the unsegmented file when not logged in. What the hell is that? One difference though is that loading stops at some point if the video is paused (or it might load fully depending on the video or your connection) and you have to hit play again or move the timeline cursor.
Whereas when logged in, it won't attempt to load the next incoming segment until it finally reaches it (which creates that annoying stuttering effect for some) and segments are rather short in that case.

So, for 720p or less videos, another working downloading method as of today is... to log out while still using the HTML5 player, until they decide to use segmented streams for visitors as well. Indeed, that is outside economy hours.

I finally got what you were seeing, but figured it out in a few moments, looking at where the stuff was loading from. (It would say something like dmc.nico:2805/hlsvod/ht2_nicovideo in the multiple files instead of dmc.nico:2805/vod/ht2_nicovideo/) It's just an option to swap between the normal way and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_Live_Streaming that got activated. To go back to loading the whole file, just right click the video and click the 視聴方法の切替(hls > http) option at the bottom. (It'll say 視聴方法の切替(http > hls) if you're in http mode) Incidentally, you can use the third option, that lets you see system messages, as another way of getting a direct video link.

>I've just discovered that Nico still serves the unsegmented file when not logged in. What the hell is that?

I never paid attention to that popup menu on the HTML5 player, I could have never found mself. Let's side for the wrong move for the moment, until we might see this option disappear and HLS forced by default in the future.

>However I can't figure out if it's me having done a wrong move and ending up with HLS enabled or if it was secretly enabled or rolled out by default
I end up back in English mode from time to time and get logged out too, so it's probably just some cookie expiring and HLS being enabled by default. HLS is intended to be beneficial though, not some anti-downloading thing.

Although, given how it works, using those multi downloaders might not be a solution, since it's supposed to be able to give you varying qualities of video, so you might end up with 1080 at the ends of a video and 360 in the middle or something, if it automatically changes quality rather than trying only to send the same quality the whole time.

There is zero reason to complain about ads unless you're poor or have shit taste which attracts you to bad sites with ads, and if print and tv ads don't annoy you, you 100% have shit taste. Also the tvs themselves record far more information than any easily blockable online ad.
Micropayments is a non argument since even porn figured out they should charge you one time to get access to all the sites in their network. Besides, you're already paying for it by dealing with the ads in the first place.

Hardly any of the sites I regularly use are affiliated with each other, so for me it would turn into a barrage of micropayments.

Sure, I regularly buy the print issues of the online news media I consume. Partially I'm even subscribed.
The second they ruin their online presence, I'll immediately cancel those subscriptions, though.

I really really doubt it was made as an anti-reprinting mesure. I doubt Dwango (or whoever owns Nico) cares about copyright when it doesn't involve a big company. The answer was given some posts above, bandwidth saving mesure.

As for myself, I regret to inform you that I'm not reddevils500 (one of the biggest joke ever). Opportunism isn't in my habits. I'm always for supporting authors.

Now when authors themselves melt down, screw up, act carelessly and don't give a damn to their viewer base who just wants to be able to enjoy their content and are also ready to support them (even financially), but instead act selfishly (as some recent event did show), it's not my problem.

That's the main reason I download stuff and why other download stuff in the first place. Preservation. Being able to enjoy any time, anywhere. And also putting a shield against unpredictable and hasty decisions from any kind of content producers. As some unfortunate events showed, even the best content ever, even the finest masterpiece isn't immune to sad events leading to hasty and destructive decisions.

Considering how shitty their higher-ups are (as seen by how slow they're updating Kancolle out of Flash and the firing of one of their gooses laying the golden eyes, Tatsuki), I wouldn't be surprised if they are the ones holding the staff back from doing as they pleased.

Then again, it's a double-edged sword anyways, because I remember when many users of niconico was revolting against the terrible ニコニコ:Zero update that made the site more difficult to use and the new flash player so ugly and bloated to run. MADs are pretty much condensed to Twitter and, at times, YouTube.

Also many of the people who make MADs nowadays are Inmufags/Cookiefags. Many of the veteran MAD creators retired a while ago because too much going on in their life or are only making MADs very infrequently.

I'm sure plenty have posted MADs to YouTube, but many of them might be blocked because of how draconian copyright is in Japan. And as such, they are either blocked (for me at least here in the states) or not showing up in the results.

Despite how shitty of a website niconico is in terms of ease of use + functionality, they're at least more lenient than YouTube is on content creation of the little guy/gal. This especially is true with NSFW MADs.

From my (limited) knowledge, they're tools to promote videos so they can have more visibility and possibly gain more views and mylists this way. They can also help placing them into higher rank spots. It's a system of ad points you need to buy or can earn through free ad tickets campaigns.

Generally, a video with lots of ad points thrown to it will have more chances to climb in popularity than an ignored one. Nico Nico often sets free ad tickets campaigns so it's not even necessary to buy them. When clicking on the campaign link, you're taken to a page with something looking like a draw with multiple options. They're either points tickets like 200, 500, 1000 points, etc or reduction ones like 20%, 50%, etc. Reduction tickets only apply when you already bought ad points and helps you save a bit of them. Point tickets are the best as depending on your luck, you don't even have to buy points.

In my case, I'm using them on videos I enjoyed, or as a form of support to their author, or on videos that I wish had more success.

Note that in nowadays' somewhat neglected Nico Nico, ad points are not enough anymore. An author absolutely needs a good handful of followers to gain success otherwise his/her videos will go unnoticed, even if care was put into them. Unless they're gems or incredibly awesome (or incredibly opportunistic).

To use ad points and tickets, you click on the megaphone-shaped icon on the right next to the video player. A pop-up opens. Then you scroll down and select your ad ticket first. If this is a 500-point ticket, then you scroll up a bit and increase the number of points you want to give to the video (in this case, 500). If you bought ad points, increasing the number of points given to the video will obviously decrease your remaining ad points. When using reduction tickets, the number of remaining ad points will only decrease proportionally to the reduction. Ad tickets of same amount can be combined (2x 300-point tickets for example) but not reduction ones. Combining tickets will allow more points to be given to the video. Once it's done, you submit.

Using the ad feature a lot will also give you access to free tickets. To this day, I'm not sure if they only serve for promoting videos or if they're also a sort of remuneration for authors (I doubt so).

Whether it's still worth it to skim through the ranking every now and then.
Currently it's not worth it. Still doing it like once a week. Unfortunately Youtube doesn't have a whole lot of interesting Japanese content either. Nicovideo used to have that.
