Nah, UFO and Hisoutensoku were both very popular. But in the two years after that, only Double Spoiler and Fairy Wars, which hardly anyone played, came out. Then came Ten Desires after that two year wait which wasn't very well-received and Hopeless Masquerade a year and half later in 2013 which most hated, both of which were probably bigger reasons than UFO. In 2013 Kancolle also came out...all of which caused Touhou to level off.

Touhou's audience was probably unsustainable regardless of UFO, TD, or anything else.

All of mecha musume is wasted. Nothing really interesting ever came out of it except maybe Gadget Trial. Even the concept of Busou Shinki and the like is continually wasted. Moe Anthropomorphic characters in general never really amounted to anything either despite being big in net culture. Maybe it's because it's net culture that it has no future? Most mecha musume universes suffer from being fundamentally unserious in some way. Even if people like the characters, the whole thing still suffers from a major air of unreality that ends up being an obstacle to how seriously people can interface with it. I really liked Frame Arms Girl but I still couldn't internalize it as anything more than a novelty.

Kantai Collection, despite not having anything resembling actual worldbuilding or a real plot, is still ahead of the pack since it has a serious "frame story" that people can pretend to take seriously. (Plus since they're not actual mecha musume people are free to create an arbitrary amount of porn that doesn't require readers to have mecha fetish or dolljoint fetish or what have you.)

Most serious attempts at the story so far have sucked balls though like the anime. KanColle is just as much as wasted potential as any other mecha musume franchise, the only difference is that it's easier to go for the grim dark ww2 history happening to the girls than having to invent something from the ground up, but that's not something that KC is actually doing with it's setting but by being based on WW2 more than for the merits of it's own setting. I'd actually say that when KC tries to go for a more serious approach it ends up being even more dumb than mecha musume franchises because it's characters' designs and their personalities can end up clashing pretty fucking hard with a more serious tone than a silly story being honest about what it is.

Yeah I feel the same way, most of the characters are still in the same field as in the other mecha musume series so they suffer from the same problem that it's hard to take seriously despite how tragic some of the successes of naval warfare during world war 2 were.
