You mother fuckers fed me a load of cat shit! You told me that I could take the verbal version of the JLPT, and that's what I wanted to do because I've focused almost entirely on verbal Japanese, but when I went to take the test and told my test proctor, she said I couldn't only take the verbal version and acted confused, so I had to sit through all the first two parts, and I just hoped that by not filling the answer sheet out for those, then I would only be graded on the listening, but then when we got to the listening part, THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE ALL IN JAPANESE! What the fuck! Why did the listening section need to test your ability to read in Japanese, and why didn't anyone here tell me that? But I tried it anyways, and I just checked my scores, and you know what? I FAILED BECAUSE YOU MOTHER FUCKERS LIED TO ME! This has completely ruined my life. I had to pass this test for qualifications I needed for this program in order to move to Japan so I could live my life, BUT YOU GUYS RUINED MY LIFE! I HATE ALL OF YOU!

I feel like this roadmap overemphasizes paid resources, under-emphasizes free resources (Tae Kim, Imabi, Sakubi, Google itself, etc), and is generally so narrow in scope as to be not very useful, since one cannot learn Japanese through textbooks alone. This chart doesn't include any mention of vital supplementary resources such as Anki or dictionaries such as Jisho, JDIC, or even grammar dictionaries like the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series.

Additionally, following a "roadmap" of textbooks is more likely to end with someone getting sick of Japanese, rather than successfully learning it. The goal of language learning should always be abandoning textbooks as soon as possible and getting into consuming native material. A successful learn will likely be abandoning textbooks at around the N3 level (which is coincidentally about where Tae Kim leaves off) to instead focus on consuming comprehensible input while referencing dictionaries, Google, and so on upon encountering language they don't know. The most surefire way to end a language learning journey in failure is to buy a boatload of textbooks and then try to stick with them until you know the language. It's important to remember that textbooks don't teach you the language, they build a foundation for you to jump off of into real native material. Someone trying to learn all the way to N1 level Japanese through a roadmap such as this will find learning Japanese a slow and unenjoyable process.

Here is a Grammar-learning roadmap which I believe will be far, far more effective than the original one posted

What you guys are referring to as reading manga, is in fact, reading the text in manga, or as I've recently taken to calling it, manga plus reading. Reading manga is not reading itself, but rather another action that causes full functioning reading to happen, made useful by the printed words, optional furigana, and vital visual components comprising comprehensible input as defined by Stephen Krashen.

Many Japanese learners realize modified version of the reading method every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of reading which is widely used today is often called "reading manga", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically reading, according to the consumption of text.

There really is manga, and these people are consuming it, but it is just a part of the method they use. Manga is the medium: the text in the material that causes language acquisition within the reader's mind. The text is an essential part of a reading experience, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete comprehensible context. Manga is normally used in combination with the reading method: the whole package is basically reading with manga added, or reading/manga. All the so-called "manga" methods are really methods of reading/manga.

There is plenty to take issue with the input hypothesis on a theoretical basis. See http://faculty.ucmerced.edu/khakuta/LAU/ICLangLit/NaturalApproach.htm and its references, Gregg and McLaughlin for rebuttals. To claim that "the input hypothesis is wrong" is strange since the input hypothesis itself doesn't seem to be a well-defined, falsifiable theory. The research cited in favor of the input hypthosis was distorted or misunderstood by Krashen, at least in the 80s when those rebuttals were written. Obviously, more research has been done by now and the evidence may be in favor of the input hypothesis at this point. I'm not a linguist, so I don't know. No amount of evidence can fix the problems with the theory, though (why *can't* "learning" become "acquisition"? does that dichotomy actually exist? why doesn't output count as a form of input (do we somehow ignore our own utterances)? what precisely does he mean by i (he bases natural order on morpheme acquisition studies but apparently natural order includes more language constructs than just morphemes. What is his evidence for that?) why is learning strictly relegated to the role of monitor? can't we use conscious knowledge for comprehension (yes, we can)? etc. etc.)

>There is plenty to take issue with the input hypothesis on a theoretical basis.

The input hypothesis is applied linguistics, not theoretical linguistics.

>To claim that "the input hypothesis is wrong" is strange since the input hypothesis itself doesn't seem to be a well-defined, falsifiable theory.

The "input hypothesis" is a VERY well-defined theory. It posits, in summary:

- That there's some kind of "acquisition" which indicates language ability, but conscious academic of study seems to be bad at giving
- That consuming linguistic information that you understand, called "input", results in acquisition

Both of which are testable and falsifiable points, and which studies continually show to have some reflection in reality, even if that reflection is not as theoretically stated.

>The research cited in favor of the input hypthosis was distorted or misunderstood by Krashen
Nope.

>Obviously, more research has been done by now and the evidence may be in favor of the input hypothesis at this point. I'm not a linguist, so I don't know.

You do not understand the field of applied linguistics enough to be having this conversation.

>No amount of evidence can fix the problems with the theory, though

The hypothesis is a description of the evidence against other hypotheses (the output hypothesis, the skill building hypothesis, etc). It is not a theoretical presentation.

>why *can't* "learning" become "acquisition"? does that dichotomy actually exist?

He doesn't say it can't help. He says that learning and acquisition are different things. The division between learning and acquisition comes from the effects that academic language instruction has on language learners. The argument is that making students memorize grammar patterns does not result in being able to accurately and fluidly use them in conversations, which is obviously true.

>why doesn't output count as a form of input (do we somehow ignore our own utterances)?

Different parts of the brain do different things for comprehension and generation. Neurolinguistics knows this. Generative linguistics knows this. Applied linguistics knows this. This isn't even up for argument.

>what precisely does he mean by i

The i means literally nothing.

>he bases natural order on morpheme acquisition studies

You cannot acquire a grammatical morpheme without at least partially acquiring the grammar rules associated with them.

>but apparently natural order includes more language constructs than just morphemes. What is his evidence for that?

Generative linguistics and acquisition studies show that grammar and phrase patterns are language features just like morphemes are. There is no reason for morphemes to be treated as special for the purpose of studying language acquisition. There may very well be particular grammar patterns or phrase structures that fall outside of a "natural order", but the "natural order" hypothesis is itself one of the things that the input hypothesis fights against: the natural order, while there, is amorphous and not perfectly knowable. It's slightly different for every idiolect and household.

On that note, "i+1" doesn't refer to things that contain a "single unknown", it refers to things that are ready to be acquired because they contain little enough amounts of un-acquired language features to be understood and learned from. You can 100% acquire のだ and のか before acquiring the specific grammatical function of の on its own in those phrases.

>> No.19099460

>>19099377
>>19099458
>why is learning strictly relegated to the role of monitor? can't we use conscious knowledge for comprehension (yes, we can)? etc. etc.)

The argument is not that learning is relegated only to the monitor, the argument is that learning only guarantees accessibility in the monitor. One can certainly acquire something they've learned; it's just very difficulty to turn learning into acquisition without input, or outside of your particular natural order, and learning a particular thing doesn't necessarily help you acquire it. While it's true that Krashen is excessively grammar-negative, he is not grammar-negative in the sense that he thinks learners should never have any intentional "learning" at all. In fact, he's very supportive of methods that go "by the way, X means Y" to increase comprehension. The strong stance against grammar studies is specifically against the Grammatical Syllabus and the associated drills.

Basically: You don't know linguistics. You don't even know enough about the input hypothesis to argue about it without saying that it says things it doesn't say.

Is it really a good method or is it just a meme?

What parts are the bullshit, though? As far as I know, the method consists on using RTK for two months, learning basic grammar after you're done with it and isolating yourself from the English language as much as possible.

That part is bullshit.

>learning basic grammar after you're done with it
Valid.

>and isolating yourself from the English language as much as possible.
This part is bullshit. You merely need to have a lot of input. You don't need to remove English from your life, not even close.

You can look stuff up in an E-J dictionary if that's what you're implying you can't do. But it's true that your Japanese time shouldn't be, like, laced with English definition insertions from a parser or anything. And you shouldn't use bilingual readers past your very first few days reading.

>> No.19099722

>>19099702
Everything you listed is pretty much fine albeit some people think RTK is a waste of time and you'd be better off just learning readings. Also not sure what that other anon is on about since less English = more Japanese input, which means you're learning Japanese faster. Khatz himself says that for many people English is unavoidable because of school or work and the goal is to just get as much exposure to Japanese as possible.

>> No.19099726

>>19099722
Reading for 10 hours a day is not very different from reading 9 hours a day. Each bit of input you consume continuously has diminishing results until you take a break (e.g. going to sleep). If you're actually consuming as much Japanese as you need to consume to learn Japanese, having an hour or two of English in your life isn't going to make you learn Japanese any slower.

Yes. For example, you can switch to doing doujinshi and manga in Japanese very early on (much earlier than it seems like you can.) because the translations for them are basically terrible and you'll understand more from the Japanese.

Is it OK to keep the English translated version on a different tab so you can know what the fuck they are talking about and THEN try to read the entire page in Japanese?

Or is it more engaging, memorable and easy to remember if you force yourself to look up all the kanji, words and sentence structures without knowing what the hell they are saying? Does the frustration of not understanding the "story" in a 20 pages long doujinshi help you stay motivated and improve your retention by forcing you to actively look up shit?

I suspect that lookin at the English translation every 20 seconds and getting the gist of what they are saying in Japanese (even if the translation is bad) could make the process of slowly figuring out a sentence feel much less rewarding and even encourage you to skip hard parts too often because you can't be bothered.

>> No.19099780

>>19099768
The english translations of doujinshi and manga are so bad that, if your Japanese is good enough to glean how they were translated, they're just going to confuse you. Doujinshi translations often border on being unfaithful rewrites, and manga translations usually cut out random stuff because the translator didn't understand what it was doing, or contain massive English grammatical errors. Doing parallel translation-raw reading of anything else is torture, unless it's built into a VN like it is with Nekopara (Nekopara basically functions as a bilingual reader because of this).

So basically there's nowhere you should bother doing it unless it's obvious.

Also if you're reading print material, forcing yourself to look everything up is a really bad idea. Try to figure out what's going on, and what they're "saying", first. Then you can try to figure out what they're Literally saying. If you can't, move on. You should, of course, occasionally read things that give you quick dictionary access, to cover all your bases, but that's a different problem. My favorite example of this is with comedy manga meant for middle schoolers. They're so easy to understand that you could cut out, like, almost every word and still understand them.

I have a hard time understanding verbs in spoken Japanese. The parts that have meaning are just one or two syllables most of the time, and the rest is just conjugation.

I find it really hard to recognize short verbs like 見る when I hear them conjugated into a really long form. Should I just train myself to think of the concept of "seeing" when I hear "mi" at the beginning of a verb? Or are there so many verbs that start like that that it'd just be confusing?

This might be an odd question but after a few weeks of studying Japanese grammar I've noticed that most sentences tend to be very minimal in terms of what is conveyed. Obviously, I guess. My question is how often are sentences in Japanese elongated and include the commonly omitted pronouns, nouns, etc, especially when speaking to actual Japanese individuals.
Perhaps another way of asking: is Japanese writing the same as Japanese speaking?

It's grammatically and syntactically valid to use it that way, just not idiomatic. The manga I read didn't contain the phrase "I didn't look anything up", so naturally I don't know the natural way to say this.

Is it true that people in Japan go to hot springs with their friends? Wouldn't that get really awkward unless you are a literal toddler?

I mean, do 10 year old girls actually go there with their moms and sometimes encounter one of their female classmates with her own mom? Isn't it super awkward to see a member of the same sex butt naked at that age? And then going to school the next day knowing what your friend's ass and pussy look like? Do they really not bat an eye to this stuff?

Does this ACTUALLY happen in Japan or did anime lie to me? You know, the whole "5 high school girls going on a school trip to the mountains and bathing together in an onsen". Couldn't that lead to bullying, considering that they get to see their shy classmate's pubes and tits? What if they decide to bully her at some point durin the school year and spread rumors about her naked body between all the girls in the school?

If 4 female bullies force the bullied girl to come to an isolated place and strip naked for all 15 girls in the class to see, it's a terrible case of bullying.

If the same bullied girl goes to an onsen with all of her female classmates during a school trip, the bullies take away her towel and everyone sees her naked until the bullies decide to give it back as she begs and cries, it's still bullying.

The same exact number of people saw her completely butt-ass naked against her will in both scenarios. Why isn't the second scenario considered bullying bait, though? Do bullied girls seriously go to these trips knowing what can happen? Or is the whole onsen thing so ingrained in the culture that they don't mind being seen naked THERE but would commit suicide out of shame if they were seen naked somewhere else by the same people?

I gave up on trying to "understand" sentence-ending particles long ago.
They add an emotional nuance, so IMHO it's best to watch more anime and learn to feel them.
Articles about them only made me more confused, since they tried to document every emotion that could make a person say "ね" or "よ", that's a pretty difficult task, probably an impossible one.

Every time you encounter a kanji/reading you don't know - write the WORD down. Do that for every kanji. Now you have a small dictionary of meanings and readings. Make an Anki deck out of it. Now you can learn various meanings through actual words that use them, your vocabulary gets richer and you get the readings. All in one with just little effort. And it's one of the methods, make one yourself if you want to. If you think a perfect method for you is gonna be handed to you on a silver plate without any effort on your side - you're wrong and you're gonna fail miserably.

Benefits of RTK:
- learn meanings behind most of the kanji learnt,
- learn how to write out the kanji by hand,
- learn that kanji isn't difficult, learn what it is composed of, have easy time with learning new kanji in the future
- for some it's easier to learn readings and proper meanings for the kanji they already know, because they don't have to bother about its writing any more
- you don't make stupid threads on /DJT/ about how you confuse kanji X with kanji Y
- it takes only 3 months to learn 3k of them, less than all the shitposting an average user leaves here + most redditors don't know more than 500 kanji after 10 years of studying the language

It's not about understanding, it's just a word that helps you memorize this kanji and its meaning.
>When I learned Latin alphabet as a kid I didn't pretend H looks like a ladder or A looks like a spaceship from Asteroids
But it would have been easier if you had actually done it. There is just a bunch of letters that you're in contact with throughout your life, so it's kinda hard to forget them.
>in Japanese you learn sounds and meanings through learning words.
Learning words doesn't contradict using RTK or learning kanji.
And I'm actually against RTK because it could have been made much better. The only real advantage of RTK is that it hints how you should study japanese (or any) vocabulary, grammar and whatnot (with associations\mnemonics), so people doing RTK will most likely apply this method in the future and have a lot more success with their studies. But really they could just learn how our memory works, read about mnemonics and study whatever they like.

How is インテリビレッジの座敷童 for a first LN?
Seems like another harem shounen, so it shouldn't be too difficult, but I can't be sure.
I know there's Kino, but I want some anime titties to keep me 元気 during the exhausting process of looking up a new word every 30 seconds.

It's really a terrible books for studying kanji. Kanji you learn from this book are mindlessly copied from extremely flawed 常用 list and 人名用 (a half of kanji you could never meet in your life). The order of kanji in the book is also strange to say the least. There is no mention of sound component of kanji at all, but in reality it's an exceptionally useful thing for memorizing readings of words and kanji. Mnemonics are usually good but there could be really anything as long as it helps you memorize kanji as I said here >>19102625

That's what I mean when I'm saying "half-assed". The most frequent kanjis are usually the most frequent parts of all kanji. You can start with 日 and 月, which are the sun and the moon respectively then you tell about a combination of both as 明; 木、森、林; 女、こ and so on, you could teach a few radicals, which aren't really kanji, like 辶 (road) and just enlarge the list. Why butcher the stroke order instead of just learning the general pattern? Once you know the pattern, you can write most kanji in the correct order without even thinking. Sure, some have strange stroke orders, but it's never so crucial that messing it up fucks up the whole kanki or anything like that.

If you ignore the general stroke order and just write the kanji however the fuck you want, your handwriting will look like crap and your writing speed will be really slow. You won't know where to even begin each time you have to write a kanji because you probably can't remember the random order you made up last time. And if you do remember, it's a massive waste of time.

It's better to remember the general stroke order for most kanji and adapt to weird stroke orders of kanji you see all the time. Memorizing your own random, nonsensical order for every single kanji is just crazy.

You don't remember it as baseball team you rembember it as 9. Then whenever you see it in another kaji you remember it as a baseball team because there are 9 required people on a baseball team. You can then use the baseball team to create a story to remember the kanji.

So then when you see next to the kanji you know as car you go "car....nine-no baseball team" Ah i got it its the story a car gets a flat tire on its way to a baseball game leaving a baseball team in rut. Then when I need to write the word rut i'll always remember its just the kanfi for car and 9. Its much easier to write it this way as well. This is a far far better method then just brute memorization of all the stroke orders.

The point is to learn KANJI not learn Japanese.

Heisigfags, report in!

How long have you been studying?
How many kanji have you learned?
How much time do you spend each day and how many kanji do you lean?
What do you use for review?
What do you plan to do after you're done?

I started a month ago and learned my 850th kanji today. Usually I spend 2 hours a day and try to tackle 30 kanji which I usually manage to do. Review takes roughly 30 minutes. After playing around with Mnemosyne and Anki I found out about http://kanji.koohii.com and use that for reviewing now. It's really nice and has this stack system, so I can decide myself what kanji to review instead of the program telling me what it thinks is best. It also has a ton of stories for all kanji covered in RTK including the third book, which helps since I'm somewhat lazy and not especially creative.
After I'm done I'll start the infamous "sentence method" as proclaimed on AJATT, but I'm not going to follow it to the letter. I'll get one or two grammar books first to get more of a feel for Japanese, although I won't memorize them in and out, since I think that will come naturally as I progress further in my studies, but a few sentences with limited vocab focusing on grammar won't hurt.
Then I'll just pick up whatever I want to learn and put it into my SRS. And probably read a lot of manga with furigana to boost my kanji readings ability.

So 京都 is きょうと, that famous Japanese city I so love to visit. I don't have to think it's the "East Metropolis," based on Heisig's keywords, because I've seen it so often, I just know it's Kyoto. But if I was just learning it, it makes a nice crutch. Same goes for 沖縄 or おきなわ, the place in the "Open Sea" where you can find a chain of beautiful islands that looks like a "straw rope" from above. It's a crutch you CAN use (you don't HAVE to) until you internalize it as simply おきなわ.

I find it's especially handy for place names.

I can also keep 待つ and 持つ straight now.

I think of RTK as lubrication for my Japanese skills. It won't make or break you, but it will make things a LOT easier.

>> No.19105147

>>How exactly does RtK help you with this? The kanji already have meaning; that's the point. If you are trying to learn a compound without understanding the logographs in it, then you are just stupid.
Simple: After finnishing RTK I already knew both characters. I also knew they mean "possess" and "name". "Possessing a name" comes close enough to "famous" right? It just snaps together like lego. (Like photo: copy and reality)
Learning the reading becomes a breeze since I don't also have to remember the characters themselves. I just know: "possessing a name" is "famous" and that in turn is "yumei". The first two steps become subconscious fairly quickly and I'm left with actually useful knowledge.
This is much faster than doing it all at once, even though it might look like there are more steps involved.

This is the 2nd day.
30 + maybe a few more by accident because I'm trying to make an anki deck and I just want to throw all the RTK kanji in there now instead of adding them as I go. I'm triggering myself because I'm not keeping a consistent format between cards. Sometimes I italicize words representing the radicals/primitives in the kanji, sometimes not. Sometimes I bold the keyword used in the mnemonic sentence, sometimes not.
Spent about an hour and a half each day learning 15. Not sure if that's the right amount yet. I'll adjust it depending on my retention.

roughly a month and a half

a couple hours every 2-3 days
I usually write down the kanji i'm learning on scratch paper then review it by writing it down on my list. I have this list numbered and I merely write down the corresponding id with its number on another list. This is how I review them. I review every kanji in groupings of 200. I review those 200 kanji every study session until I get non wrong. I then study once every two study sessions for a while and will continue to study them less frequently as I go on.

I'm currently using the core 2k/6k anki deck to learn real vocab as I go. I'm also very very very slowly going through tae kim. I should probably be less lazy with that. Hopefully by the time i'm finished with RTK I will have a firm enough grasp on the language to start reading. I plan to eventually read books out loud in sync with the audio books to really get it down.

8 months. 1817 kanji. 30 min, 6 kanji per day. Anki.
I go slow because I have other thing to do.

I am learning the kanji in the Heisig order, but no his stories, nor the random english word he choose for each one. For some kanji I pick two english word that I think that better capture the meaning of the vocabulary that use that kanji.

I am learning the kanji while I do the core deck and I read some manga or NHK easy news when I have time. You should do the same, don't wait til you learn all the kanji before learning vocabulary, grammar or reading real Japanese. That is too boring...

That's enough to start reading.

When you read you don't need to have, nor should you expect to have, anywhere near close to 100% comprehension until you have nativelike fluency, which you only get after reading/listening a lot every day for 5+ years.

If you can look at this page and think "this guy is sleeping in a bed and there's something spooky going on", and you can pronounce all of the hiragana or katakana in it, then you're ready to start reading.

So I'm reading キノの旅 and so far it's actually not going too badly, I'm starting to see why the reading meme isn't really a meme, as a lot of grammar and vocabulary usage makes far more sense given a bit of context without the aid of pictures.

However, I'm confused by one thing - the book contains furigana for selected words, but am I truly meant to believe that a native Japanese person in the age range to read this novel would require furigana for things like 彼, 幽霊 and 紹介? It's largely inconsistent as there are often "harder" words (in my opinion) without the furigana.

Any explanations?

>> No.19106968

In the case of 彼 sometimes you see it because 彼の is a literary kanji form of a different word (in 彼の's case, it can be あの). You learn Japanese by reading. Anki is supplemental. If you're wasting time learning things from Anki that you do not currently have a use for, you're spending time doing something that doesn't help. You could be learning words you need right now, that knowing would let you read faster.

Not mining something uncommon yet does not mean you're not going to learn it, it just means that you're learning more important things that you will benefit more from learning right now.

No one tells this. Learners before reaching a high level of fluency have no way to tell how often a word appears in texts and if they occasionally learn something "useless" it's not gonna harm them since it's a very small percentage. That's what I'm saying.

>You'll just forget them soon enough.
If only there would be a program that makes sure you don't forget words, right?
>Mining rare words is only fine when you have a vocabulary of over 10000. Until then it's a waste of time.
You can't tell what words are rare and even if you could it doesn't mean that YOU aren't going to come across them often. I probably haven't seen 刹那 for months (it appears 0 times in the last books I had read) but some authors would constantly use it instead of 一瞬 and so on. And apart from author's styles there are certain genres, contexts, etc. Do you get the point? Never have I regretted in my life mining words.

Ultimately, just study. The less time you spend shitposting here, the better you will become at Japanese.

In the time it took you to read the last 5 posts on this page, you could have drilled a whole bunch of flash cards, or read a page or two of a light novel.

Anything new I learn in japanese has a miserable impact on my overall language comprehension and if reading japanese is rather a routine for me than means to enjoying then I'm less inclined to study japanese. I don't understand why YOU don't follow your advice because you're exactly type of person who needs to study and I'm a retired veteran who just does it as a hobby sometimes.

I know over 10k words but over half of them are obscure bullshit and I'm still missing lots of common vocabulary.

That message has been there for ages, and there still aren't any limits.
You can also host your own sync server if you really hate the idea that much.

It's not my problem if you don't want to get good. As for me, I'm reading right now and take breaks every few pages to write down new words and shitpost in this thread.

"I don't want to work hard!"

As AJATTers call it, a "get out of excellence free" card.

Because there is nothing better for retention of new words. As long as you learn new words anki is useful. Even if you learn one word a day it still takes less time to add it into a deck and review it several times than look it up in a dictionary every time you meet it or write it down in a handbook and rehearse or other shit you can imagine.
