Is the Umineko manga worth reading after having finished the VNs?
I heard there are some things in there that are not shown in the VNs.

Episode 7 clarifies the meaning of Willard's breakdown.
Episode 8 expands on certain scenes, adds more scenes and interactions, and is more open about the truth. Some people dislike it for the last point and thinks it ruins things, but it's still done very well and should be given a chance. Episode 8's manga is like the final period to the story.

The art is still great overall. Some scenes are captured really well, even though there's no music. There is one YouTube channel that shows scenes from the manga and matches it with the appropriate music:

The VN encourages you to construct a solution by yourself. If the manga is going to tell me what exactly Shannon did in EP2 and in what order, I won't accept it as part of the real canon.

I like how you can imagine the little details by yourself and consider it the truth, as long as you don't contradict Will's solutions. I don't need to know who was the first person to get killed in EP1 or what weapon was used each time. I like to imagine it myself and change it whenever I want.

People will find that disagreeable, but that kind of thinking is also similar to the message of Episode 8 (which the manga does a slightly better job of explaining) and the whole theme of the incident being a catbox. That type of thinking isn't necessarily "wrong" because of the type of story Umineko is.

I like that way of looking at it: one could think of Episode 7's manga as providing one version of the possibilities, rather than being the absolute truth.

So I finished reading The House in Fata Morgana and noticed a few similarities with Umineko (kinda).

The story is centered in a mansion, it has a witch who curses the mansions residents, people die each episode or in this case door, each door repeats the story but in a different time setting giving you more clues with each door and it leaves you emotionally dead at the end.

Anyone else read it? If not I really recommend it.

This isn't even about "believing" in alternate theories. I accept the official solution, I just don't like the idea of being told every single detail about it in the manga.

I want to imagine how the creepy eunuch carried out each scenario by myself, rather than having my imagination restricted by an unnecessarily specific solution that explains in detail how Yasu convinced all the siblings to go into the chapel or where exactly the cousins hid during EP5 after their "corpses" disappeared. Or if they were killed during the game or lived until the end. Or if Eva killed Rosa by accident in EP3 or did it intentionally to keep the gold.

I just want the rough outline of what happened and what tricks Yasu used, and that's exactly what EP7 gave me in the VN. It's a vague explanation that solves every closed room with Yasu as the culprit and a bunch of accomplices, but it doesn't go into detail and lets you fill in the blanks.

I just need to know that Genji and Kanon lied about the chain. I don't need to know which of them killed Eva, who was carrying the stakes or what any of them said. Just leave the details ambiguous so the reader can use their imagination and construct the mystery side of the story themselves.

I only felt angry when I read the manga.
A lot of the theories I had pieced together were almost right, but not quite. They were in the realm of possibility, but small details were different. It just stripped all the fun out of it. When discussing theories/solutions with other people, they would just say, "Oh, the manga showed it happened like this..." and the conversation would die.

An example would be the first twilight in episode one. I had it figured that Sayo and Genji had walked into the room acting as though they were going to serve the adults something. When they came up to the table, they knocked them all out by trauma to the head. That would explain the small amount of blood in the room and would fit the truth that said Genji isn't a killer. They then carried the bodies to the shed and Sayo destroyed their faces with a tool. However the manga just straight up shows up that she walked in the room, shot them all in the head with Kinzo's rifles, and then used a buckshot to blow off their faces in the shed.

I really like the manga, but I disagree with a few explanations about EP3 and EP5. I like my theories better than the manga's, so I consider the manga its own canon.

Honestly, the manga isn't really "canon" to the VN. Using it as evidence to destroy someone's theories is pretty pointless. Ryuukishi revealed all the necessary info in the VN, so anything added by the manga can be discarded if you don't personally like it or have a personal theory that you enjoy more.

I'll keep believing that the creepy blackmailer was played by Kanon during the very first phone call and then by Battler during the conference. And Eva definitely wasn't a paid accomplice in EP3, she legitimately solved that shit, killed Rosa by accident during an argument, tried to cover her tracks by murdering anyone who got suspicious and was indirectly responsible for Yasu killing her son because she was too greedy to announce the discovery of the gold.

I like your story more, but the part about fucking up their faces while they were still alive... That's way too fucked up for someone who is just basically mercy killing everyone. I figured that she did it to cover the gunshot wounds. But yeah, I like the idea of them getting shot after being knocked out (be it with sleeping pills or using force) more than just Sayo walking into the room and shooting everyone with perfect accuracy to avoid leaving obvious bullet holes on the walls that even Battler would notice. I also feel like being shot in the head would leave a lot more blood in the room. They didn't necessarily say there was a small amount of blood there, only a smaller amount than what was in the toolshed. I could be wrong but I think that since they were already dead by the time they were taken to the shed, they wouldn't have bled as much even with their entire face getting blown off. All in all, the manga solution is obviously possible, it just doesn't fit as nicely I think.

Well, people were miffled because ep7 didn't explain in detail what happened in the previous episodes. Nevermind that it is absolutely obvious in retrospective and there's not really any other ways to construe the truth.

Like, in ep4, everyone was bribed in order to create the illusion of the witch except Battler. That's how ep4 is such a rollercoaster. Once you understand the rules of Umineko, there's no really any other way to understand ep4. Yasu bribed everyone and told them they'd play a game for Battler: and then she killed each one of them for real when they didn't expect it.

Or in ep2, Yasu killed herself in the final closed room. It's obvious in retrospective.

I recently reread Umineko and fuck me if some reactions are golden. Eva and Hideyoshi knew about Yasu in ep1, and in one scene subtly try to tell everyone that the killer is in the same room as everyone else. Eva is trolling Natsuhi all the way down, and damn if it isn't subtle, but it's here.

Same thing with Rosa in ep2. She knew. That's why her reactions are so stilted, she knew about Yasu and the servant's conspiracy. Reread those scenes with that in mind, it is so plain obvious in retrospective.

Well, I think the majority of people who hated it just moved on. When umineko gets mentioned on /a/ a lot of people still dogpile it.
New people from what I've seen generally tend to have barely any issues with the ending though. I assume it's because those people can read it in 'one go', so they don't have the time to develop wrong expectations. People spending a decent amount of time theorizing only to have their expectations 'betrayed' is what I believe to be the main reason that so many people got mad in the first place.

I'm not going to try and oversell it, but its well worth the read. The art is unique and well drawn, the backgrounds are very atmospheric, the music is one of the better ones among vns. The story at first can feel like its going nowhere, it's not until midway through where it all really comes together. The characters draw you in though they feel like they could've gotten more depth.

The best way I can describe Fata Morgana is that its akin to a stage play of a shakespear novel. It has the same feeling and plays out similarly as well. Its a four act play followed by a five act one.

Just like subahibi has parts that are parallel to Umineko, fatamoru has many you can draw as well. I feel like each of these vns help elevate the other in different ways, however small.

While reading chapter 4, make sure to look at the backlog every couple minutes. There are many things said in the backlog that didn't appear in the text box. Like voices in your head. It really helps build up the change between the two halves of the vn.

That's why she gave up and decided to intentionally go along with "Beato" no matter what, even though she knows magic is a trick. She decided to do everything this friendly adult figure told her to, because she trusts her to do the right thing. Ever felt like this as a kid? It's natural to trust an adult you love and believe that they can handle any situation and make the right decisions when you are lost and confused. You can't really grasp the idea of them being just as confused as you.

Maria is helping the culprit kill a bunch of people and forcing herself to be irrational and ignore the obvious truth. Deep down she knows there is no golden land, but she feels comfortable "believing" all this stuff because she has nothing else to cling to. And she probably has a faint hope that somehow this is all real and magic does exist after all, since she is just a kid and doesn't really know much about the world. She doesn't really have that much common sense yet, so she can't really discard the idea that everything she was taught could be a lie. We adults know that certain things are just impossible and that facts are simply facts with no room for doubt. But her brain isn't fully developed yet, so she can't really think like that.

We all have to start somewhere. Don't make your very first project something incredible, you're more likely to crack and drop it. It's a lot of work for just one person, even if you add royalty-free content to help.
If you already write a lot, start with something you're familiar with by adapting a story you have already created. Keep it decently short enough so you can see yourself finishing it. Your very first project will be about learning the process.
Lastly, don't get your hopes up that you'll get a grand audience once you finish making a VN. If you pour your heart into it and want to share it but you can't get anyone to read it, it can hurt a lot and be very demotivating. For your first project, try to have fun with it. Seeing your own story come to life with pictures and music and sound effects is really fascinating.

You can use these completely on their own or, if you're feeling adventurous, you can use these as your base and create your own version. Ableton Live doesn't cost much and I'm sure there are a fair amount of free or cheap VST sound libraries that you could experiment with. or you can pirate several thousand dollars worth of EastWest sound libraries

Repentance Anon should just read Higanbana and RGD. They were the biggest victims of the Umineko EP8 hatedom. Literally nobody give a shit about them, even though they are pretty damn good.

I only have problems with some of the sprites. The problem I think people have with the Alchemist art isn't that it's bad. It's that they try to make it look so good that comes off as plastic/mechanical.

And in comparison with Higurashi it's not really as necessary even to people who aren't hardcore classic art onlyists (me being one of them because I think anyone who can't handle the original Higurashi sprites is a wuss). The Umineko sprites have always been awesome. Especially with the troll face expressions, which are very hard to adapt outside of Ryukishi's art style with most mediums.

The new art is good. I don't really [always] hate it. I just wouldn't prefer it.

Yeah it's good.
Gameplay wise it obviously isn't as good as something like Melty but it's still pretty good, way better than most low-budget anime fighters.
Artwise it's great, the pixel art and animations are beautiful, and playing a fighting game with the Umineko soundtrack in the background is a treat.
I can't tell you much about story/dialogues because I played the Japanese version a few years ago but from what I've seen in some screencaps here, it looks fun.

Ryuukishi was supposed to be a niche and obscure author, but his works became super popular because of the decent Higurashi anime that shat all over the novel's tone and filled the whole thing with over the top crazy faces.

That's why Alchemist, DEEN and to some extent the manga have always emphasized this crazy face bullshit in their remakes/adaptations, even though it doesn't really originate from the VNs themselves. It feels pretty tacked on in many Higurashi scenes and completely out of place anywhere in Umineko. The original version of Umineko only had witches making troll faces (which has NOTHING to do with this cringy crazy face shit) and an autistic expressionless kid saying creepy shit that is meant to be weird/off-putting rather than scary or shocking.

The sprites are mostly fine in my opinion. I think the backgrounds look pretty, but they kind of hurt the actual experience of reading the novel because they look so sterile, empty, bland, boring and soulless, on top of being too detailed, making the background recycling and laughable perspectives really obvious and impossible to not notice. The original blurry photographs were much better, because you could catch glimpses of random shit that just happened to appear on the picture, without being intentionally "drawn" by an artist. They are very interesting to look at.

I kind of enjoy the Pachinko CGs because they depict scenes that didn't have a CG in the Alchemist version, so they are interesting to look at. But I'd never want to see a fucking CG while reading the actual VN, and especially not during those scenes. It's pretty jarring to go from sprites to a still picture that doesn't change the character's expressions at all and stays there for a solid 10 minutes.

The some based on the Pachinko CGs are fucking horrible, though. Pure garbage. Only SOME of the characters look decent because they are cute girls. Also, say hi to the immersion-breaking Ryuukishi sprites for the 1998 characters if you use the Pachinko sprites. Kawabata shows up again in EP5, EP7 and EP8, destroying your immersion and making the scenes incredibly laughable every time.

This I can not discuss, even if I prefer the pachinko sprites, we have to agree that a bad job was done. Chick Beatrice in ch6 walks with the pipe, several sprites of ch4 do not have pachinko versions, and even having CGs inside the game, they do not appear on the screen.

I like the new backgrounds because I had played with the originals, and I enjoyed seeing them drawn, but I also like my original experience with blurred backgrouds.

Changing a little bit of the subject, why is higurashi's ps8 patch missing Okonogi in military clothes, Akasaka fighting pose and Hanyu's additional outfit? I played with the original sprites, and I missed them when I went to see the patch version.

Those sprites aren't in the PS2 port because Matsuribayashi was replaced by Miotsukushi. They were added in the PS3 port though
