Hi /djt/!

I have been teaching Japanese for 11 years and would want to retire from Japanese teaching in 3 years time to focus on my IT.

IT and Japanese has always been my 2 things that i like....

Before i retire, i hope to create a very good resource (something like Japanesepod101) for all students learning Japanese to encourage students learning to never give up.

Would anyone be interested to help out in this project?

Things i would like to cover

Writing Hiragana/Katakana properly

Mastering Pitch accent

A guide better than Tae-Kim`s guide

etc, etc

Also, if you have an suggestion for any good platform like Wordpress to use, please let me know.

Appreciate.

I want to shake my study habits up a bit in hopes of accelerating my learning, so that I might get there faster. I've considered:

>Non-novice textbooks like Tobira
>Audio lessons like JapanesePod101 and Pimsleur
>Grinding on the dictionaries themselves for a while so that I learn the common dictionary vocabulary and grammar

Please tell me why some or all of these ideas are shit, and whether it really is just a case of "read more".

Greetings.

Every day on this forum I see a plethora of posts from hardcore users. These people stress the importance of having a large vocabulary for both writing and speech, lest you miss out on any information. They will insist on native like pronunciation, and denounce anyone on YouTube with an unnatural sounding accent.

They also offer the classic AJATT suggestion: "You need to have headphones playing Japanese constantly embedded in all orifices."

But what about the casual learners? The people who watch Anime with English subtitles, and just want to learn the odd word here and there for their amusement? Well I'm here to speak for them.

The people who spend all day studying Japanese know more words and more Kanji, but that doesn't necessarily make them superior. Let's not forget, they made sacrifices to achieve that skill level. In the time it took them to reach an advanced reading level, they might have been doctors or lawyers. They might have been the next Mozart or Tolkien.

If you want to skip Kanji and just learn a few words it doesn't make you stupid or a weak person. For those that have learned to read—I think it's a fine task that you've accomplished and I salute you for it. But let's remember that it's not for everyone.

That's okay, though.

This is a thread for people learning Japanese. Watching anime and "picking up" an odd word isn't actually learning a language. It is very odd to come to a thread for a specific topic and act like it's silly to be talking about it.

Any skill takes effort. Any thing has an opportunity cost. Go tell piano learners that they should have been lawyers instead. You don't need to make yourself feel better for not wanting to put in effort on a thread about putting in the effort.

Should I hire a tutor? I have comorbid ADHD inattentive type and high functioning Fetal Alcohol (spectrum disorder) that make it difficult for me to retain information. To be specific, I don't have too much trouble building on ideas and foundations that I've already acquired, but for language learning where creating a new framework for thinking and percieving the world is a necessity, I fail pretty hard.

I've tried taking a college course on elementary Japanese, but it moved way too quickly for me, and I was forced to withdraw to preserve my GPA. I don't consider myself stupid in spite of my disability, but I clearly can't take the standard approach to language learning. Would a tutor be able to hold my hand, at least until I've build a solid foundation?

So just started for about 2 weeks, I set a plan for myself to first learn the vowels from Hiragana, then at another "consonant" everyday (ex. day 1: a,e,i,o,u - day 2: ka, ke, ki, ko, ku)

I've learned the k+vowels and s+vowels, and want to learn t+vowels next but find the initial ones are harder to remember and that many of the characters have a similar writing style but have no relation in sound like 'ki' and 'sa'

My usual studying methods in a day takes around 3 hours, where I copy the hiragana and then use and hiragana to Romanji app to quiz myself.

Is this an effective way to learn? or are there any suggestions of how I can possibly improve? (btw I'm a girl and a visual learner if that helps.)

Hi.

Let's say I wanted to make a living as an English novelist and hopefully go down in history as a great writer.

Is studying Japanese a bad choice of hobby? Is the only way to gain any Japanese skill to do "all Japanese all the time" and dedicate my life to the language as Khazumoto says? Or is it possible to put a small amount of time into Japanese and achieve enjoyment, without it adversely affecting my skills at writing in English?

I guess what I'm asking is, both writing a great novel and learning Japanese are herculean tasks. Is it bad to try and take on two herculean tasks at the same time?

I can say that yes, it's possible to do both, and I believe doing them in tandem is beneficial in some ways. But I do have a couple of advantages: 1) I do not have a day job, and 2) I took 3 years of Japanese about 15 years ago and have traveled to Japan 6 times.

Both of these are indeed significant challenges, but if you are passionate and disciplined, they are absolutely achievable.

I've forgotten most of what I've watched which is why I keep a list in the first place. 12 episode anime are especially easy to forget if they aren't really good. The good thing about this is I can rewatch and still enjoy a lot of the better anime

I'm currently rewatching Naruto because I forgot most smaller details in the story but remember it being good when I watched it

So I don't come across stuff I can't understand very often but this one just raped my brains:
もし私がブスで部屋汚くてぐーたら女だったらマジギレしてる
The context is the guy is talking to the girl saying that she should be more feminine besides only her appearance. (her room is a disgusting mess and shes a lazy fuck)
Now what I can't figure out is why did she say 汚くて when her room is already 汚くて and shes talking figuratively?
The only deduction I could come up with is that 汚くて is also a negative inflection of 汚い so she meant to say something like 汚なくて
But that's just straight up wrong isn't it?

Literature is entertaining. A lot people think it's boring because their entire experience with it is being force fed a few old books in high school. Worse, the teachers lie to their students that the value of literature is decoding social messages or some other tedious bullshit to make writing essays easier.
A lot of the most inventive and fun writers today are published in literary venues (村上龍, 舞城王太郎, 町田康, 島田雅彦, etc.) Anyone tired of cliches in light novels should definitely give other kinds of literature a chance. And don't just give up on it because you don't like Botchan or something. Japanese literature is diverse enough that no one could possibly hate everything.

>I'm afraid of ending up like those reddit posters who're like "yeah I've been studying for 7 years now and I've just learned my 1000th kanji"
Utilizing the techniques in RTK1, try to memorize 10-15 new Kanji per day and you'll be done with the book in ~4 months. Then make an effort to start reading. Or do what the other anon says and utilize the techniques to learn the most common Kanji. You're not going to be a reddit pretender so long as you attempt to make progress.

If what Matt teaches is AJATT, then literally any method that focuses on large amounts of input is AJATT. Which is complete bullshit. It's not AJATT unless it's exactly what's written on the AJATT website.

Yes, Matt learned a lot from AJATT, but he didn't learn Japanese from AJATT, he learned Japanese from massive amounts of input. Yes, what Matt teaches is based on AJATT, but it is not AJATT, and when you just say "AJATT", you cannot be referring to what Matt teaches.

AJATT is not about massive amounts of input. It's about reading several hundred badly-written self help blog posts, language learning advice written by someone who knows nearly nothing about language acquisition, and constantly shifting efficiency goalposts (lol remember when massive-context cloze deletions were a thing?).

Don't forget about burning out and scamming people!

Yes, and AJATT is used almost exclusively to refer to khatz's creation. Using it to refer to immersion in general is something that people embarrassed about khatz do to try to hold onto the AJATTer "identity" they have. It's not something that anybody outside of their AJATT pseudo-cult does.

The only place that even holds japanese classes in this country is Japan's embassy itself.

Everyone has troubles with kanji because kanji represent words and learning words is the most time-consuming (hardest) part of languages. It's not an argument for using rtk at all. Learn about mnemonics and get over it. RTK would've been more or less usefull if kanji had been in an adequate order and at least with on readings (since they are based on parts of kanji most of time)

Hello I know this has been discussed a million times but if like to see for advice on what you would do in my situation.

Background: Half assed 1 year of Japanese at my University using genki 1. Later on I meet my now fiance and while dating started to catch in to a good amount of everyday phrases and words just from talking to her. We have spoken 2/3 English 1/3 Japanese for about 3 years and I've improved a lot in listening and speaking but I'm lagging on vocab and Reading writing.

I got serious about working to master Japanese about one year ago and decided to do rtk and learn all joyo kanji. Then restart genki and start learning vocab with the kanji I learned.

I'm at 800 kanji now and have plateaued hard. I feel like I'm having to remember a thousand random stories and if I take a week off I have to go back a couple hundred and go at it again to remember the previous kanji that make the more complex ones . I don't know how long it will take me to learn the rest and I keep reviewing until they ones I've started are down solid.

As you all know this doesn't actually teach me any Japanese. I've been able to guess the meaning of some words using the kanji I've learned but not many and it seems I'm just learning kanji for the fuck of it with no practicality. I like kanji as I enjoy calligraphy but of course learning all 2k separately isn't necessary for that.

On my recent trip to Japan I was able to identify a lot of kanji but only individually so it served me little purpose as there was 4 or 5 more kanji that I didn't recognize.

However I was able to pick up on a couple of common kanji just by having them explained to me by my fiance when I asked about a word or name and I now have them down solid. Same thing with some manga I brought back, just reading for about a month I've learned a good amount of words and the kanji within them just by reading and using a dictionary with words I didn't recognize. Now I can read them easily.

Which brings me to whether I should stop RTK , start genki and start learning real vocab. Rtk has helped me to be able to differentiate kanji , notice radicals and for handwriting. My fiance even said I am better at noticing the small details in kanji and writing them than she is. She has to use the keyboard for certain kanji.

What would you all advise?

Tldr : plateaued in rtk, should I drop it and start doing genki with kanji?

>> No.19078277

yes

>> No.19078281 [DELETED]

>>19078264
Finish RTK, at 800 kanji there are still so many radicals you did not learn. Seems that you are burning out though, I would still do at least 5-10 RTK per day until you finish it while doing Genki or any other Japanese study method you are interested in.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What Matt is referring to as AJATT, is in fact, large amount of input, or as I've recently taken to calling it, massive input. AJATT is not a language learning system unto itself, but rather another blog with hundreds of badly-written posts, filled with language learning advice written by someone who knows nearly nothing about language aquisition.

Many learners users immerse with a modified version of the massive input system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the method of massive input which is widely used today is often called "AJATT", and many of its learners are not aware that it is basically the input hypothesis, developed by Stephen Krashen.

There really is a AJATT, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the method they use. AJATT is the scam: the program on the AJATT website that allocates the reader's money to Khatzumoto's pocket. The scam is an essential part of a money making scheme, but useless by itself; it can only bring results in the context of a complete language learning method. Input is normally used in combination with the AJATT system: the whole system is basically massive amount of input with AJATT added. All the so-called "AJATT" gurus are really distributors of the input hypothesis.

The whole fire, water, grass mechanic from Pokemon did inspire the type mechanic of verb, adjective and noun. I had to generalise a kanji to only one type category though.

21 days ago I made a post on /djt/ where I asked which Anki decks I should use to learn Japanese for Anime, Manga and Visual Novels. First and foremost, I would like to thank you all, I have never come this far! <3

I am here again requesting for some help and insight.

Used tools and progress

I made the decision to use the core2k/6k deck together with Tae Kim's grammar guide. I have learnt around 310 words and I have completed the "noun and adjectives" section of the complete guide. I learn the words at home in the morning and evening and the grammar at work during my breaktimes.

Current problems/challenges

At the start I needed 30 minutes for my daily Anki routine but it kept going up. It eventually reached the point where it took me 2-3 hours to do my daily routine. At that point I couldn't handle it anymore (head explodes!), to solve this I reduced the maximum amount of reviews per day to 80. (1-2 hours)

Questions

Am I on the right track or should I do something different, if so what exactly?
Is reducing the maximum reviews my best option or are there better ones?
What's the finish line? How many vocabulary do I need to learn in order to achieve my goal? (2000 or 6000?)

>> No.19079207

>>19079201
Don't worry about X number of new cards per day. Instead, have a set amount of time to study (say 2 hours). In those two hours, you review everything due first so you keep what you learned. Use remaining time after that to learn new stuff. Your review to new material balances over time. It also lets you add or take away time as life dictates without as much worry.

With the mechanic of combining kanji to form a specific kanji, it became too hard for me to test in my code and too much to write for specific combinations when the game was crashing all over the place. I ended up allowing all kanji to combine as long as it isn't the same type.
I like to add in that feature now but it's gonna take a long ass time and one of many things to work on.

For the whole creating decks based on manga chapters, I would need to build a network and also have a system where users can create and share decks. It's beyong my scope of what I can do now.
I haven't stopped making the game I will add the next 1000 kanji with the main piority of trying to get half the amont of kanji with a unique effect before tackling an improved synchro mechanic.

>>19079026
Nah bro, I wouldn't mind if somebody could bring my ideas to fruition. I would be proud while getting 寝取られ vibes at the same time.
Another cool core idea that ties into card games would be the typical lore you read off cards.
The description of 火 should have been, "火 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦, 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 4 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥."
Or the desc of 頁: "𝘈 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺... 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘴 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦".
Having cool descriptions would definitely have helped in making the game less sterile.
I tried Anki a few times and I just couldn't get into it, I thought a game is much better. I'm surprised that nobody ever tried gamifying kanji cause its' just a huge pain looking at flash cards.

Also for future reference keep in mind not all katakana words are actually loan words. Manga authors in particularly love to use katakana on japanese words for cool factor. You couldn't find it in jisho because the word is written in hiragana. Try looking up けつ instead.

I started learning Japanese a few years ago but only really started about 1.5 years ago when I got to college. I took 2 semesters of Japanese and am now currently studying abroad in Japan. I would say that I am maybe 3 months away from an N3 level of Japanese.

My problem is I know a ton of grammar, kanji, etc, and I can understand around 80% of daily Japanese conversations/ small talk. But when it comes to responding, or speaking in general, I feel like I never have the vocab or gammar to express myself. But if I can understand other people you would think I have all the vocab and grammar necessary to say whatever I need to say.

I think there is some sort of disconnect. Maybe I get too nervous when I speak, or I am trying too hard to come up with how to say what I want. Some of my classmates are able to respond much quicker than I can and just seem to overall have better flow.

Is there a good way to have speaking feel more natural. I have been living in Japan for 6 months now, and while having improved a ton, it feels like my speaking is still lagging behind. When I first got to Japan I could just barely figure out what people are talking about, and now I can almost perfectly understand conversations.

Sorry if this post is a bit convoluted but it's kind of hard to explain where I feel like I am at. I do a ton of listening, being that I am in Japan, but speaking is tough for me. When I practice speaking I only end up using very basic grammar. I'm only in Japan for a little while longer but don't want to waste this amazing opportunity to improve my Japanese. Is there a list out there somewhere of the most common grammar used in speaking? I learn so much grammar but feel like there is no practical use for it, or there are so many different ways to say thing (for example, asking for help or giving advice).

Please help!

Hey djt, I'm really new to Japanese and have only been learning basic words and Hiragana as of now, I don't know all the hiragana either but I've been having trouble differentiating symbols like "き and ぎ" and "ち and ぢ". I've been remembering most hiraganas by finding something interesting about them. (Example: む looks kinda like a cow to me and also makes a sound similar to "moo") but these sets of letters are hard to memorize, if there were only one of these, I would simply remember it as "This letter, but with two lines over it" but there are way too many. Can anybody who's also done this tell me ways they memorized the sounds these made?

How I see it is people that want to "learn" the language for anime are mere failures that gave up after learning kana and pissing their pants at realization of the amount kanji you have to learn to be decent.

Watch the videos from Japanese Ammo to get started. They are some of the best out there for grammar and shit. She also explains the similarities between the kana characters so that you can build up from one to the other rather than memorizing 40-something random shapes. I REALLY recommend this channel if you are just starting out or need some refreshing.

>む looks kinda like a cow to me and also makes a sound similar to "moo"
This is cute an all, but try not to rely on it too much. Mnemonics are good at first (if you create them yourself, pre-made ones are worth shit), but you should eventually, and by eventually I mean in just a couple of hours, begin to recognize the characters by themselves and completely forget about the mnemonics.

And you should start with kanji as soon as you feel comfortable with Hiragana. Vocabulary is much easier to remember when you associate kanji with it, and kanji is only possible to remember if know actual words that use them.

I was just wondering why they always say the same shit about "anime Japanese" when not all anime is cringy otaku shit. I'm fairly certain that there is a lot of anime where people speak in a natural way and don't use words like kisama and shit. Or at least as natural as fiction can be, animated or otherwise.

When am I supposed to use だ? Is it just to emphasize things?

As far as I understand, "desu" sounds way too formal so people drop it in informal speech. But having no "desu" at all makes the sentence feel "weak" when you are trying to really emphasize something. So is "da" a compromise between the two? Is it a "desu" transformed into a less polite-sounding word so that you can still use it informally?

>uso desu
Sounds fucking ridiculous and too polite for the situation.

>uso
The desu is only implied, but that makes it lack impact and doesn't fit a burst of anger.

>uso da
You are telling them that it IS in fact a fucking lie by not omitting the verb, without using the overly polite desu.

Are you sure? I've had a few Japanese teachers tell me that desu is omitted most of the time, so when you use it constantly it sounds way too polite. And apparently "degozaimasu" is not "formal" speech (that would be desu), it's literally treating the other person like a god and only used by servants or in extremely polite situations.

I wouldn't consider using "desu" unnecessarily to be standard speech when you are speaking to people you know. You usually drop it half the time. Same with the "masu" form. It sounds too polite to use with people you know.

だ/る/する - Friends and family. You use this if the two of you are of similar age/status/familiarity. This is probably 2nd most used in daily life.

です/ます - When speaking to strangers or anyone with a formal relationship. So bosses, co workers, senpai-types, people who randomly chat you up. You should be doing this most of the time and make up about 90% of your interactions. There’s shortcuts and lazy ways of maintaining standard politeness, but it still comes down to this: how you talk with friends and strangers are pretty different in English, too. So it is in Japanese as well, it’s just defined a lot more clearly for you.

敬語- If you are working in Japanese with clients, customers, have a formal speech to do or an email to write, this is what you’re using. And it sucks. It’s like business English. No one talks like that naturally, but you gotta put on airs in the business world. You probably use this the least unless you’re working and working long hours.
