What's the average age of a /jp/sie nowadays?

Are we the first board to surpass an average age of 30? Or have so many of the original posters died/left and have been replaced by newfags that we've gotten younger and are now closer to the sitewide average (which is somewhere in the early 20s)?

>> No.19053811

I think /jp/ stays on a more or less constant of mid 20s, probably younger now. The older users largely left or killed themselves.

No. I was motivated to make this thread after finding an old blog belonging to a former member of gg fansubs and reading his farewell post:
https://mod16.org/hurfdurf/
Here are the specific quotes that got me thinking:
>it may or may not be surprising that anime fans are really, really bad at moving on. Granted, I’ve seen the same phenomenon in other pop culture as well, but anime fans are particularly persistent. Basically, the actual point of this blog post (which I’m actually starting to get to now) is the question of why people have such a hard time letting go of the hobbies and the stories of their youth.
>What puzzles me is why so many people choose to stay with the stories of their youth. Hollywood films based on comic books are seemingly very popular. People who once played World of Warcraft are coming back to it. Which Saturday morning cartoons you watched as a kid is apparently still very important to many people. People who got into anime at about the same time as I did (or in many cases many years earlier) are still watching and writing about it, even though in some cases (see: Colony Drop) mostly limited to complaining about how things were just better in the Good Old Days. People cosplay their favorite teen culture franchise as grownups. Why cling so desperately to these teenage years? Is it just nostalgia, or have I missed an important part of the zeitgeist? Is it that the social networks you establish around your hobbies now are stronger than they once were?

Most of the posts in this thread confirm this observation, and my nagging fear that a lot of longtime /jp/sies found the board in their formative adolescence and stay here because of the resulting deep attachments that they carry into their adult life.

It's interesting: I spend so much time here that I never bother learning *kana* let alone kanji or grammar, I watch one anime episode a week or so and never contribute creatively. Doubtful. Pre-2013 /jp/ was a product of the physical capabilities of the internet at the time, 4chan's relative unpopularity, and the nature of internet culture up until 2013/4.
Social media has a lot to do with it, I think. Internet subcultures were a lot more self-contained back then. Now trends, content and controversies popular on social media permeate all other communities on the internet.

Get out as soon as you can if you're not going to invest. Learning Japanese isn't hard (taking into account how long you've been here), and it makes a world of difference if most of your free time is spent around Japanese media/culture.

You really don't realize how many things you're ignorant of just because you're limited to what has been translated into English on the whim of some guy vs seeing the raw output with no limits on how niche or small something is.

For example, I'm guessing most of /jp/ thinks Comiket, Reitaisai, and maybe wonfes are the only markets or something because that's what 99% of /jp/ discusses. But there are other things like comic1, sunshine creation, or even Futaba Gakuensai, etc...

Did you ever get curious and read into the history of PC-98 through 2hu and discover a library of forgotten eroge to play through? Or Japanese-only memes that only sometimes leak into /jp/ via a dying platform like NND?

On a tangent, the topic of writing a history of /jp/ is something I've seen pop up recently from time to time.

I think it's something that should be written: our archives depend on the efforts of volunteers to keep them available, and the financial health of 4chan is slowly declining as always. I could easily see most of the knowledge and written records required to write a comprehensive history of /jp/ disappearing within a couple of years. But more than that, if we don't write our own history we will end up having it written for us, either by normalfags, outsiders or political-types (either of the /v/ or FYAD varieties).

I wonder if anyone here would be interested in reading it? And if so, what would they expect the history to cover? I'd be very interested in writing it myself, since I'm newly NEET and have the time to write it before I'm forced out onto the streets.

To be honest, I think getting out of here would be a good idea either way. The image board format isn't an efficient medium for doing anything other than wasting time. I managed to temporarily quit /jp/ for a month a while back and cleared a good chunk of my anime backlog during that time.
>>19055212
I think everyone here can agree that 2013 was the nadir of /jp/ board quality do to cuteposting, but the board was still tolerable well into 2011 and much of 2012. Things only started their terminal decline when the /v/ monoculture began assimilating all of the other boards in 2014 via all the autists that GG attracted.

Anyway, everyone should go fap to coke-buta.

One's brain hasn't fully developed until they're about 25. Also like all thing in life, too much of a good thing ends up being bad for you. You get bored of the same thing everyday. Your tastes ideally evolve and change over time as you get older and you want to experience new and different things.

I speak from personal experience but actually not about otaku culture. Prior to this I was a metalfag and would go to punk shows every weekend and dress like a walking stereotype and be that culture from about 12 years old to about 25.

A lot of these people also associate being into otaku related hobbies with their teens, which is why it's "unacceptable" as an adult. So they give it up, because they were never into the hobby for the hobby but the community offered by it (/a/, for example, or those ironic weeb pages you get on facebook). Their old hobby isn't compatible with the new community they aspire to join, so they "grow out of it".
I still watch a lot of anime when I can, for example, because I like it, and I largely do so alone and never discuss it anywhere because I personally don't like the anime community. I used to visit these places when I was just getting into it 5 years ago when I was 16, but I realised the communities were too toxic. They're too concerned with "taste", with appearing "patrician" to actually enjoy the anime, or too concerned with what memes or fun they can have with other people.

So posting here is at least a chance to guiltlessly say hi or talk about shit that I couldn't talk about outside, like idols or whatever.

I was here since around late 2006 but didn't really get into /jp/ until around 2011ish. In my young and teen years I was an obnoxious prick who constantly virtue signaled about how much I hated anime and anything that comes from Japan and how much of a le epic "alpha" I was. It was only when I met some friends who happened to be into that shit that I started to simmer down, than I decided to give some of that stuff a fair shot and found there was a lot to like in some of these hobbies.

Nowadays I mostly use /jp/ because the majority of the rest of the site is pretty much unusable and full of tools that remind me of my insufferable youth personality that fills me with anger whenever I think of it.

I think he's just jaded that he spent so much time translating and subbing instead of investing his time in friendships, maybe he tried to show the anime that he subbed in an attempt to make some friends but people laughed at the content, then he felt everything was pointless in his life? Who knows, but I get this gut feeling that he hides some sad stories under the sleeve.

Like some anons here said, some people like to jump from hobby to hobby, that's comprehensible but there's no need to completely ditch your older hobby, you still can commit to it even if in small doses.
He says some things like "you need to explore more besides the small corners of the world" or "fiction can be fun but it's ultimately pointless", but to me this only seems like he's trying to cope with something, that's why the concept of "hobby" exists, some people just feels more afinity to some things than others, there's no need to be a jack-of-all-trades and explore every little thing out there, being too much in a comfort zone can probably be unhealthy but having a comfort zone is far from a sin, like I said before you still can branch out without ditching older interests, there's no rule about "you can only commit to one thing" in life.

Change can be good in some aspects, but you don't need to force change in everything about life, some things are meant to happen naturally, however if this change did happen to you, trying to convince everyone else of your "truths" is incorrect and inaccurate, your reasons to change may be applicable to your but it isn't to everyone else, each case is a case.

The best thing was that internet culture on the whole had way lower stakes. No one was fighting for "control" of a board the way /pol/ or tumblr does nowadays. Individual communities didn't do much beyond the occasional raid.
This gave /jp/ shitposting the opportunity to follow world4chan rules of shitposting where you take one insignificant point and follow it to its ridiculous conclusion, often as a parody of prevailing mainstream internet culture.
