If you decide not to talk to Rin when she confronts Shirou at school, then events get bumped around, and Shirou doesn't meet Illya in the shopping district the first time he's supposed to, and only gets to meet her once. Then servants get Caster/Assassin/Lancer get eaten and Shirou comes home to find Saber gone (is she dead, or Illya's servant? who knows cause it was worded vaguely) and Illya turning him into her doll so that the Shadow won't take anymore servants.

Watching the movie skip all of those Illya scenes just feels weird knowing that a bad end happens because of that. Its not even implied that Shirou sneaks off with Illya. They better make up for that in the second movie.

I do appreciate it sticking to 7 Servants. Extending to 14 was the biggest mistake in Strange Fake.

The bugs biting into Shirou's flesh actually looks really painful, and the bites they leave are nasty as fuck.

I just realized they left out Rider being an anti-hero who doesn't have to be that scared of the Shadow, like Assassin.
In general I think her beating TA at the end wasn't as impressive as I imagined.

With that said, I absolutely love the Shadow showing up at the end to just watch over Shirou, and he's pissed at it at that point.

Do you have a problem with these in Case Files as well? There is nothing wrong with these in SF, these references and call backs flesh out the world far outside some lone fucked up Grail War in America. Other than that it might actually get some newer Fatefags who know nothing about the other Type-Moon works to follow them and for others who have read those other works to have some semblance of continuity instead of something brand new from scratch yet again. If you have established characters and backgrounds then use them instead of throwing them away and making new ones, leftovers can be good with how you use them and Narita is doing a damn good job with them.

DESU, Sigma might eventually become a pseudo-servant like what happened with Filia, due to the experiments conducted on him in his youth, or him taking up a NP like Longinus is enough to qualify as Lancer.
Watcher seems to be a conceptual servant related to 'those overstepping their boundaries', as it manifests as Ahab and Icarus, who both meet their demise because of that.

I love that Richard has an NP that Artoria should have had.

That's one thing I can give Narita. He did his research when it came to giving heroes Noble Phantasms, while also making them very strong. Which makes sense. No one wants to read a Grail War with a bunch of weaklings.

I don't like that they introduced Saber Alter so early, I think transitions between some scenes could be handled better (or just be present at all), and the animation for the Saber vs Herc fight in the beginning felt a little shoddy, but I still liked it a lot. Pretty much any scene focused on just Shirou and Sakura is gold, all the effort put into emoting Shinji really paid off in subtly establishing what kind of character he is, and the OST had a couple good tracks and the actors performed well. Not to mention that amazing sequence in the swamp with Lancer and True Assassin. I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle Illya in the upcoming films.

However, while the twilight of the Age of Gods brought Gilgamesh unfathomable opportunity and power, the transition from the more mystical high-concept period of the previous millennium to the more mundane one he was born into left Richard strapped for heroic trials to overcome and he was encumbered by the ambiguity of whether or not paragons of old like King Arthur or even the supernatural entities he did manage to come across during his crusades were real or not. Whereas Gilgamesh eventually attained enlightenment of a sort and spent the rest of his days as a wise and just king, Richard died prematurely and in the midst of his mania for war after he was assassinated by one of his own subjects. Gilgamesh is painfully aggressive and pompous, but transparently so, while Richard's warmth and humility belie darker and bloodier depths. The Gate of Babylon gives Gilgamesh access to a wide variety of weaponry he has limited expertise in wielding while Richard's Noble Phantasm just lets him use Excalibur by turning anything he wields into Excalibur, but he's very, very good at using it. Shiki was a generic nice guy dating sim protagonist who periodically flipped out and became a killing machine. The routes were about the girls, not about him, unlike FSN where much of the story revolved around Shirou and his inner struggle over his ideals. Nasu himself has admitted that Shiki ended up too passive and tended to go along with the heroines.

Shiki is supposed to be defined by his will to live, but that doesn't really come up in the story other than the Akiha ending where Shiki supposedly kills himself but is then brought back by Ciel. Also Shiki keeps saying that he's a normal guy who means no harm even though you constantly see his personality inverting and him becoming a killing machine. This contradiction is never addressed; Shiki never really confronts that part of himself. Nasu tried to have his cake and eat it because he wanted to have both standard dating sim scenes as well as badass action scenes in Tsukihime. As a result he gave his protagonist a split personality and having one be a generic nice guy protagonist and another being an emotionless assassin. This was pretty lazy since it effectively was two separate characters sharing a body rather than one character responding to different situations.

Shiki never really struck me as that humorous especially in his initial portrayal. From Melty on his personality in the canon changed a lot, became far more dorky. Of course, the manga solidified it. In the original Tsukihime he feels extremely bland, though. Well, ourside of his random bouts of murderous impulse. Shirou is objectively the more interesting protagonist, but also probably the most frustrating for me. A total dumbass through and through, and he has practically negative chemistry with almost all of the characters save Saber, and even that is mostly because they're similar in their dullardry. Shirou is honestly one of those protagonists that I only appreciate in retrospect, but reading through his viewpoint frankly almost made me drop Fate a few times when I read it a decade ago.

The problem with all of those things is that even if they were true, he's still correct in saying that the chemistry therein was lacking, since the delivery was, in and of itself, pretty bad. Shirou talks like an incoherent asspie, though I suppose it wasn't really helped by the stilted and often bemusingly immature prose of the translation. For all I know it's a lot less spergy in the original work.

You can point out all of these similarities in character X and Y and how it relates to theme Z, and therefore their romance culminates in the blah-blah, but it doesn't really matter when the crux of the entire thing -- that is, the character interactions themselves -- feel lacking in any semblance of profundity or realism, especially in a context as difficult as love. Anyone can draw a million important connections between two people, especially people who are friendly with one another, but similarities do not a well-crafted romance make. In-fact, it's often the opposite, since anyone in a relationship can tell you that the more similar you are to another human being, the less successful a relationship often is. The truth of the matter is that most of the romances in Fate didn't feel organic. All one can do is look from the sidelines at how the relationships make "sense" in this sort've generic meta-esque connection between the characters and their various homogeneous makeup. It's very robotic. And to be fair that might've been entirely Nasu's point, but it still doesn't really make for entertaining romance writing. It's a lot better in HA but that's primarily because Nasu brought in guest writers that can actually write entertaining SOL. Well, better than he can, at least (which isn't exactly earning high marks)
