Beginner to Japanese, already own Japanese from Zero books, but looking for other books to get without the mixed romaji (or no romaji at all). Hopefully that made sense, I started learning Japanese, but I soon got depression and well my language learning stopped. I've gotten better so I want to try again, I still remember most of the kana (though I'm relearning just to be sure) and the 4 kanji I learned. Now, I bought all three JFZ a few years ago, but now that I already know kana and have tried to avoid the romaji (to the point of marking it out in another book that I was given). Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of the kana mixed with romanization (it throws me off and I'd rather just have all the kana) and I wanted to know if there were any other good books that would be good for a beginner, but doesn't have all that romaji (or mix of romaji/kana) in it. I know about Genki, but for just one book that is expensive (45 dollars, last time I checked on Amazon), so I'm a bit wary of buying that and it not be that good.

Not sure if this information is needed, but I'm a native English speaker, and I started to learn Japanese for anime, and manga, but now in addition to that, I want to set a goal of working towards the JLPT N5 or 4 (any books that might be good for that would be appreciated too). I'm better at remembering vocabulary and reading, than I am at speaking and grammar (kind of half/half on writing).

I'm still not done with the guide, but I've finished 4 chapters of yotsuba. Read the 4th one in under an hour, the first one took me two days because of all the "strange" grammar patterns I didn't understand back then.
It's best to start reading as soon as possible, there's a fuckton of things you will have to get used to.

I'm still fairly beginner in Japanese, and I'm wondering how I should go about learning Kanji. I was originally planning to wait until the end and save Kanji for last, but I'm afraid that if I do that I won't know exactly what words have what Kanji because of the multiple readings and all that. So is the more ideal option to just learn new words in their Kanji form and learn it like that?

t. guy who did 5-15 minutes of anki and 2-6 hours of reading every single day for over a year, dropped anki and now at the 2 year mark i can read most things i want with little to no difficulties (and the things i want to read are probably quite a bit more verbose than most people in this thread are interested in, so you'll get there for the things you want to read much quicker)

Is it possible that someone might just...never be able to speak Japanese?

I speak two languages fluently including English and I speak a little Spanish, and I've been trying to learn Japanese while living in Japan.

I've been studying for years, listening to Japanese music for over 10 years and I'm living in Japan for 1 year and a half now. I study everyday and I recently got a job at a cafe/bar the past month where I use keigo but I kind of just go through the motions.

I seem to not be able to get the hang of speaking. I hang out with Japanese friends/my boss and words/sentences just don't come to me. I struggle to speak and communicate anything I want to say. I get stressed and down every single day lately cause I feel like I'm such a failure and that I should be speaking pretty well by now.

I'm thinking MAYBE I just can't get the hang of it, and some people just...can't. Not really sure what else to do about it. Anyone have a similar experience?

>> No.19005485

>>19005469
No, it is not needed. If you're a bitch, that is. If you wanna learn real nihongo there's no way around it, you need to learn kanji as it's the most essential part of the language. Don't even bother learning hiragana and katakana because it's basically the baby version of the language, and it's equivalent to learning how to read, write and speak from Tommy Pickles. Cut straight to kanji, with the fastest way of learning the basic 3000 that you need to read a simple children's book being to print them all out and copy them by hand (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz. Lastly, move to Japan and teach English. Good luck, cunt.

Suit yourself. For me reading TKGG several times is more boring than constantly switching between jisho and manga. It doesn't cover that much anyway.
Judging from my experience studying English, it will take a couple of years to accumulate a vocabulary of around 10k, so I can go on for days without looking up a single word. I don't see any point in doing nothing but reading textbooks and memorizing flashcards when I could have some fun reading.

Ok so what I'm doing is this: Until ~mid June, RTK. Then, maybe slightly before I finish RTK since I'll be on break, Tae Kim, Then once I finish RTK I want to do Core2k and then when I finish the first 2000 words I want to start reading and mining sentences.
I hear tons of people saying not to do Core, but I feel like since I've got nothing to do this summer and since I am lucky enough to still be in school. I feel like I could do the first 2000 fairly easily.
I've heard about watching unsubbed anime. I still want to look up exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. Should I just be listening for words I don't know? At what point do I call something a word rather than part of a word? How do I even mine anime sentences.
I just started so I'm not 100% sure on everything, but this is the most structure my life has had besides getting up most days to go to school.

Clover Days
Tsuisou no Augment
Chuuning Lover

Any recommendations/comments on the above choices? I'm leaning mostly towards Clover Days, but the other 2 are apparently really funny (especially Chuuning Lover?). Only thing I'm concerned about is that Clover Day's length is labelled as Long (30 - 50 hours), not that it's a big deal, I'll be struggling a lot anyways. The remainder is sheer exposure to and experience with handwriting which is pretty much impossible while overseas. Maybe I'm lacking in imagination but the biggest source of handwriting I can think of is artist scribbles and even the majority of those would qualify as extremely clean.

My job requires me to read japanese handwriting but I'm only saved because I know most of the words that could possibly be written in this context. I'm still way worse than a native.

Is there anybody here who can listen to/read Japanese without having to look up words most of the time that hasn't used Anki at all? I'm genuinely wondering if I should bother with Anki because while my comprehension of sentences is pretty good, I'm having doubts about whether or not I'll ever be able to get to the point where I can instantly recognize obscure words in sentences (and therefore, when listening to spoken Japanese, my I can comprehend it at full speed instead of taking extra time to recall a word) because of how rarely they appear.

What to do if Anki on android is starting to slow down for me? Sometimes if I press the grade too fast after flipping the card, it remains on that card instead of showing the next one, and it overall feels more sluggish (other side of cards appear slower, not instantly)

Your first VN doesn't really matter. Just pick any slice of life VNs or even nukige, you're gonna encounter basically the same grammar and same words, so just pick something that looks nice to you. Obviously you can tell from the plot synopsis whether it's some very complex sci-fi stuff or just normal people going to high school, or someone fucking his mother. You can imagine the difficulties involved with each.

I disagree. Dies irae looks like the most incredible operatic chuuni you've ever seen based on the summary, but it's secretly moege.

Also there are tons of moe games that have incredibly rich vocabularies because their writers don't know when to shut up.

The main advantage of anonymity is being able to say retarded shit and not having to feel shame about running away from it.

The fact you recognize words in English by their shapes is pretty neat, and considering you probably recognize hundreds or even thousands of word shapes, it makes it a bit easier to see where those disgusting savages are coming from with their pictographs.

How would I begin an end a Thank You letter to my teacher in Japanese? I'm writing a letter to a teacher to say thank you for teaching Japanese 1 so well. I would love to know how to do the equivalent of a salutation & closing.
