I know I shouldn't be posting this because lol not your blog, but how much can I progress in learning japanese in a month if I already know katakana, hiragana, a couple of hundred or so give or take kanji and can barely read simple sentences if I know the context? Bad choice of words, it's not the mystery. I like learning languages because I like learning languages. I absolutely do want to master Japanese, definitely more than Mandarin anyway.

It's just that I'm in the awkward spot after 16 months of studying where I can't watch anything without subs, read Mishima (my main goal), and I don't know enough Japanese to start looking for Japanese friends online (I don't want to start production until I pass at least N2).

I'm masochistic and seek challenges. When I open a Chinese video or a website and don't understand a word, it looks fresh and challenging, makes me want to learn it. It's merely a matter of the order in which order I want to learn them. I've spent long enough with Japanese that it sounds ordinary, but I can't use it for what I really want to use it for. I'd rather be reading Muramasa than generic high school slice of life VN #173

It's that slump between the honeymoon period where kanji used to be intimidating, and when I can actually start using the language for what I wanted to use it for. I'll get over it sooner or later.

I was reading 2chan today and for the first time I didn't see a single new kanji on page 1 of the cooking section because they write most of the ingredients in katakana.

I don't know much about China (I avoid studying the history and culture before I start learning the language so I have interesting stuff to motivate me to learn) I'd never want to live there, outside of like Taiwan maybe.

I'm even greatly more interested in Korea than China, but Chinese sounds and looks more fun and challenging. Either way, I'd hope that in 12-16 years I'll know all 3 of them

How do I study for the JLPT N4 within 2 months? Background: I registered for the JLPT N4 July test around 2 months back, but because of my severe procrastination and time management issues, I have been able to finish only JLPT N5 kanji and vocab, and lessons 1 to 7 on Genki I. Now that there's a little more than 2 months left, I have finally come to my senses and I am feeling really panicked. I'm very confused. I don't know what to do next and make better use of the little time that I have left before the test.

I'm having summer vacation right now, so I can study for about 10 hours each day from 16th March until 5th June (21 days) and 2 hours/day after school starts on 6th June. How should I go about studying? Should I ditch Genki in favour of something more JLPT-focused like にほんごチャレンジ? How should I organize my study-time? Will getting a teacher from a site like italki accelerate my learning or am I better off on my own?

I absolutely need to pass this test, as I've already spent ~$210 ($50 for the test registration, $100 travel expenses, $60 Genki) of my parent's hard-earned cash for the test. I can spend only a $100 for additional material (piracy is always an option though). My dad said that if I fail the test I'll need to discontinue my Japanese studies, and I really, really don't want that.

I just received my JLPT N4 results, failed by 2 points. I am not so upset about the test specifically, but it has confirmed some things I have been thinking for a while.

I am 24 and living in Chicago, my dream has been to move to Japan since I was a about 11 years old. About 6 years ago I started seriously learning Japanese, took my first college class, even though I had already learned Hiragana and Katakana from a young age. I sailed through 2 years in college without doing much HW because it was all just so easy. I have a great memory for nouns. After getting out of school I realized that I had to start to learn how to study so I decided to start to study for the JLPT because it would be a goal every year that I could see my progress. I failed my first year N5, by 30 some points. I thought I was ready but I relied too much on class information and just didn't study enough. then I kinda got in a rut and although I studied some, I really didn't commit to Japanese for a while. I probably tried to do at least 15 minutes a day but I wasn't really working hard at it at all.

Flash forward a couple years and I had started to study again, passed the N5 and was feeling good about life. 2011 was me hitting my stride. I had finally learned how to study. I did Rosetta Stone, got the Japanese TV channel and watched as much as I could, downloaded dramas, got through the entire Basic Japanese Grammar book, tried to read children's books, got a lang-8 account and started writing journals at least once a week, started Anki, read Common Japanese Collocations, got the Tobira book and started it, picked up some manga, got a Japanese exchange student, started speaking only Japanese with my husband in public. I was pretty much AJATT. I am not going to say I did great at all these things, but I definitely tried. I think I tried everything because a lot of things didn't work too well for me. So I wasn't the best student, but I was doing Japanese at LEAST an hour a day.

So October 2011 rolls around and I decide I need to start studying for the JLPT N4. I did nothing but study for the JLPT so long, my brain actually hurt every day. I did practice tests, worked on grammar, bought a couple of listening books and studied specifically for that test for 2 straight months.

I just received my results, I failed. I only failed by 2 points, but it made me realize that I actually guessed on almost every question on the test. I could not understand the listening at all!

So here I am, I have put 6 years or more of my life into this language, I have worked my ass off, I even have definite plans to move to Japan April 2013 to join a language school with my husband for a year. We already have 1/3 of the money saved up. And I feel like maybe I am just too stupid to learn this language. I have tried so hard and I just keep failing. We just made friends with a Japanese couple and I can't understand anything they say, I am defaulting to my husband just to be able to converse with them. Plus its super hard to watch him pick up the language with ease and pass all the tests with flying colors.

So I guess I need some help. I am ready to just give up the language completely, but I have no idea what that will do to my life and my relationships (I have already told my whole family I am moving to Japan) Should I just give up? Is there anyway I could pull myself back up and continue with it when I have failed so may times before? I have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this language!! Any opinions on Memrise or other learning apps? Last year I worked through Duolingo’s entire Japanese course, which was good for getting some basic vocabulary and learning how to produce sentences. A lot of it is figure it out as you go, so reading Tae Kim during helped. After finishing I thought I could start reading shit, but it turned out Duolingo is shit for teaching Kanji, which is like a double edged sword because it teaches you words but you’re not going to recognize them reading in the wild. Switched to Memrise recently, and I’m liking it because it’s actually teaching kanji for words I already know and it feels like a lot of stuff is clicking in my head. Of course, I imagine there is a lot of stuff that I’m missing that I won’t know I’m missing until I try to read something and have to figure something out.

Taking that long to learn hiragana isn't that bad. You have to take into consideration that it's your very first exposure to a completely foreign writing system. If you, in addition to that, haven't done much rote during education, it's to be expected for you to take a bit to figure it out.

As for how long it will take in general, it's a stupid question. It'll take how long it takes. The only benefit of putting such time pressure on yourself is to force yourself to study regularly. It's better to just develop discipline instead because the negatives of rushing and always thinking about when you will become proficient is that you will eventually just give up because you will never be satisfied with your current state.

Regardless of how smart/dumb you are, you have multiple years of studying ahead of you.

Adults learn completely differently, we need a structured approach. But even if we could learn like babies, it's basically logistically impossible because we don't have someone around to interact with us in said language every waking moment for every day for several years, which is what it would take.
