There's no point in even trying because you have an inexplicable hateboner against this thread and will always find a way to undermine people's achievements. If someone posts certificates or test scores you'll argue that they don't prove anything; if someone claims to have read [insert whatever "difficult" Japanese work of fiction] or that they've reached a point where they can comfortably consume any Japanese media they want you'll say they're deluding themselves and don't actually understand what they're reading; if someone posts in Japanese you'll jump at every slightly unnatural turn of phrase, etc. So what does having "undeniably" learned Japanese actually entail? Have you undeniably learned Japanese even though you still make mistakes (like a while ago when someone posted a line from a prayer asking about ん and you said it was ぬ), and how are you in any position to judge people in this thread when you claim to have been in contact with the language for fucking decades?

My first child is due to be born within the next four months. Me and my wife are both monolingual but I'd really like to be able to teach my child a second language.

I find Japanese particularly appealing. I would be teaching myself, rather than paying for lessons. Is it possible that with concerted effort, I could get my Japanese to the level required to talk to my baby by the time it arrives? Obviously I don't need to be fluent by then, because children don't start to learn to talk until about 18 months. But I do need to be able to speak to him/her in Japanese so that they get used to the sounds and so on. After that, I think 18 months is probably long enough to get conversant (enough) to teach my child the language properly.

As many here have already trodden the path of self-learning Japanese, do you think that, given the extreme time constraints, this is realistic?

Half of the arguments in this article boil down to, "you don't want to live in Japan", which, sure, if that's your entire reason for learning Japanese is maybe something that you need to think hard about. The other half boil down to, "even in Japan you don't need Japanese", which might be technically true,, but nobody likes the kind of people who move to a country and refuse to learn the local language. Realistically, since you're not a native speaker, this just seems like a bad idea. The reasons to have a child be bilingual are when they will actually use both, with the best example being one at home and one outside the home.

Overall, you should use that time teaching them something practical instead. Japanese is just a hobby language unless you're planning on moving with the kid.

>> No.18976653

>>18976564
Thanks for the advice. You're right that it would just be a hobby language and we certainly aren't planning on moving. I've read that being raised bilingual has many benefits outside of the obvious practical use of the language itself. I want to give my child the best start in life I possibly can. Perhaps you're right that I could/should be teaching them something else - music is another common recommendation. Thanks again.

Bilinguality has some nice benefits, but can also be pretty confusing for a child. It all depends on the child itself whether it can take in one or two languages properly. I wouldn't recommend teaching a second language you don't know yourself properly either. Even if it works at first, it sooner or later will start to ask nasty questions you won't be able to answer as a novice.
I'm not evne sure if I'd try to raise my child in both my mother tongue and English, cause my pronunciation is a bit off sometimes and I make some errors here and there. I'm still pretty confident, but early errors can have long-term effects.

What backhole countries did he visit? I haven't visited Japan yet, but I can imagine it's hell for a foreigner everywhere that isn't a tourist spot. You can ask almost anybody in small European countries and they'll response in English.

Hi,

American here who is traveling with my wife to Japan for two weeks. We will be there around New years at the end of this year. She is fluent in Spanish and I am ok in Spanish but not fluent. I am familiar with duolingo and have tried to start but being in college my time is limited during the semester. However, with summer coming up I've decided to dedicate a good portion of my time to learning Japanese for the trip.

Has anyone taken any online courses that they enjoyed? I'm looking for something a little structured as opposed to just winging it. I'm in Fort Worth, TX but haven't had any luck finding anything local. If anyone knows of a good coursera, EDX, etc etc for Japanese I would appreciate it... or any other helpful suggestions. It is in formal situations, where 私 is more appropriate. Generally if you're speaking casual Japanese, 俺 is fine. Textbooks say 俺 is "rough and rude" to prevent new Japanese learners from going out and using it in inappropriate situations. 僕 is a completely fine pronoun to use in casual conversation, and it's "safer" than 俺 in that it is less "rough", if you'd rather use 僕 go for it, ignore the memes.

Probably not that much honestly, there were only really a few years where I watched anime all the time as a main hobby, most of the time it was just an occasional thing I did when the fancy struck me or when I heard good things about some series in particular.

Got 178 series completed according to MAL though I probably forgot to add a bunch of stuff from before I started using that to track it. And yeah I know I'll get some flak for using that site but shit, I'm a forgetful fucker and too many times I'll get halfway through a show and then take a break for a few months and it'll be damned impossible to find my place again, so letting Taiga (formerly MAL updater) track that shit for me is a godsend.

Manually updating a text file is way less convenient than just clicking the name of the show from my currently watching list on Taiga, letting it find and launch the episode automatically, and automatically increment the watched count when my player has been active for a couple of minutes with it going. Also handles automatic torrent downloading with slightly less clicks required than my torrent client would do (mostly just right click show from torrent tab "use this sub group for this show" and then all the other filters are set up nicely out of the box)

If you only have 25 minutes a day to do flash cards and have 0 other time to practive Japanese, then what's the point in learning? It doesn't even sound like you've got enough time to use it for your own entertainment purposes. You realize you're still gonna have to do Anki reviews after you reach the end, yeah? In fact, you're supposed to be making your own mining deck from the stuff you >>READ<<. All that kanji you're learning is worthless if you're not reading to cement it/actually use the damn language, you know?

Like I don't wanna bully you into quitting, but you need to re-evaluate your priorities. If learning Japanese is important to you, then you need to cut something out of your life and create some more time for it. It has been/is a large time investment but I think ultimately it is worth having a reasonable sized collection all in one place without any of the more silly file host barriers or torrent seeder lottery can help readers explore more of what is out there in the rich but often overshadowed medium of manga.
At the moment you may notice a rather large discrepancy between what has been uploaded and what has been listed in the table/stats on the from page and linked gallery in comparison to that which can be found in the "All Manga/Ongoing/Concluded" pages. This is deliberate but temporary as at the moment it is easier and faster to add content than add all of the relevant details for each new series. The plan is to reach a round figure of 2000 total series before shifting focus back to the main pages but it may end up being less, depending on a few things.
There is a newer little feature on the front page: a random button. Selecting this will replace the page at random a single entry. I don't really know how much use it will receive but it is a curious way to answer the question "recommended me something". Discover something different, right?
Your post gave me an excuse to shamelessly give an update which I wasn't planning on giving for another month or two, so thanks.

Oh, almost forgot. There are mirrors for all the manga on the main pages and soon to be back up mirrors with single links for a main folder for the entire collection. At the moment this is 800GB over 21 mega dot co dot nz accounts.
Mega has a feature that allows you to import links so if anyone wants to make mirrors of their own or just download a lot of manga, they will be able to use these links that I'll post next update. It can already be done now, one link at a time but that would be mega pain in the osiri.

Pic unrelated. Shoulder length fluffy brown hair is so (*´▽`*)

>> No.18979233

I recently started Tae Kim's grammar guide, and I've got a question concerning one of the practice problems:
アリス) 辛い料理は、好き?
ボブ) ううん、辛くない料理が好きだ。
To my pathetic understanding, it roughly translates to this:
Alice: Do you like spicy cuisine?
Bob: No, I like mild (?) cuisine.
The subject particle that's affixed to "辛くない料理" is used instead of the topic particle because the topic of the conversation is Bob's preference towards spicy cuisine, not the cookery itself; thus Bob's preferred type of cuisine needs to be identified.
Is this correct or at least somewhat so?

Am I just dumb or is the jlpt n5 belittled more than warranted?

I’ll preface this by saying that I understand that the n5 is barely scratching the surface of functional Japanese and useless as a certificate. But from a beginner’s perspective, I feel like a complete dummy when I see so many people estimate being able to pass it from scratch in as little as two months.

Now I have a full time job and have no plans of working in Japan but I believe I have put a respectable amount of time into study considering that it’s a hobby.

My progress and habits from scratch went something like:

2 days to learn the kana

Studying about 2 hours a day

+30 mins of listening comp

+30 mins vocab drills

+having review subjects on my mind all day

Took me about 4 months to do everything in the genki 1 book and feel somewhat comfortable with the material

+1 month to learn the additional vocab for the recommended list of 800 and pick up the random grammar points I saw here and there

I haven’t begun the kanji part just yet but am honestly more concerned with grammar and listening right now because 100 kanji don’t scare me and I already picked up 50 of those along the way.

Listening is where I first started wondering how and why the n5 is belittled primarily in terms of difficulty. I want to be clear that I understand why it’s dismissed as useless but in my head, learning 800+ new words, how to conjugate them 4+ ways, polite and informal, and recognizing them all in spoken questions on the spot seems like a decently sizable task for someone coming in with nothing.

I picked up a listening comp cd for n5 and definitely still have to listen to it a lot of times before getting a vague idea of what is going on.

I’m no smarty pants but I’ve never been a slow learner so the fact that I still feel like I’m struggling to understand what the jlpt questions are even asking when people claim to be cruising by has me slightly worried lol

I think I can definitely get through both genki 1 and 2 and its vocab in a year but being able to consolidate all that for a test and especially the listening comp doesn’t seem easy without going really hard into it with all I have. Am I alone here?

Yep, imo while in the grand scheme of things (and compared to other languages) it's just about functional for getting around and asking touristy stuff, the N5 is still a great achievement. It's not really great in terms of your actual knowledge, because even though you know a lot, it's like you said, not scratching past the surface, but the skills you need to learn and acquire, especially if you're someone new to languages or had trouble with them at school, don't make it easy by any means.

I listen to Japanese music essentially as my only source of music, so while it's not really reflective of daily conversations, I do get a constant taste of Japanese being spoken and I think it's helped a lot just listening to Japanese being spoken. I strongly believe a huge part of Japanese in particular is becoming accustomed to it as a language and being able to understand the ideas being expressed, as well as expressing yourself 'correctly' in the context of the language.
