I think Tsukihime is a solid introduction VN if you don't want to go with something much shorter and linear like Narcissu or Planetarian. But you should kind of tailor it to his tastes. If Fate would work better to hook him, go with that. If he likes Lovecraft, maybe start him on Saya. If he'd be more for lighter slice of life kind of stuff, maybe Da Capo.

Tsukihime and FS/N are both great VNs

As someone who doesn't care much for TYPE-MOON, I would still recommend Tsukihime for a first Japanese-style adventure game. It's got a lot of the features that most have without being completely generic. It's probably the most well-rounded choice as far as things available in English go.

Yume Miru Kusuri is the answer. Lots of GOOD H scenes and an awesome story, plus it won't freak him the fuck out like Wanko or Saya would.

Yume Miru Kusuri is about the best mix of plot and porn you can find. Wanko's story is boring, it's only good for the h-scenes, so I wouldn't suggest it to a beginner.

My first eroge was Crescendo, I thought it was a nice introduction. Not absurdly long, good music, writing was ok, every girl is interesting, but the art is somewhat lacking.

I think FSN is a good choice for a beginner. Graphics are good and has a lot of pew pew with swords and cool effects. Tsukihime may be too "harsh" for a beginner, since it's an amateur work.
Any commercially translated vn's should be fine too (vn, not those mindless hgames like sagara family and the likes).

My first VN was Ever17, Tsugumi route.

You pretty much need to have a walkthrough to make sure you're in the right part of the resort at the right time, but Snow Drop is a pretty decent eroge. It's about a guy vacationing at a ski resort with his female friends. The choices about who you sleep with in the game are less governed by how you treat people, as where you go and at what times, as the girls are at different parts of the resort at different times of day during the vacation.
