As much fun as it would be to "IT'S LIKE I'M REALLY JAPANESE", get an air mattress. Much cheaper and easier to manage. Get one of those double layered ones and no one will even know you don't have a real bed. I slept on one for like a year with no problems other then a couple holes that are easy to fix. Also chicks in college don't care how shitty your apartment is cause everyone has a shitty apartment.

To each their own, but I've found them to be much more comfortable then futons. At least futons in the same price range as an air mattress. Try putting some padding on it, I use to use a comforter under my sheets to make it more comfortable.

For an awesome "it's like I'm Japanese!" feeling, import a kotatsu. In the winter, you'll end up asleep under it whether you want to be or not.

Futons are shit. No one is going to fuck you if you have a futon.

A "fiber bed" can make a decent substitute for a futon. Sleeping on one on the floor is confortable, even in the Midwest. I just moved mine towards the inside walls come wintertime. Plenty warm win a couple of blankets. Expect to get weird looks when people see your bedding though.
