Mion is nice because she's a flawed character, even if it seems like she's the only club member to not undergo any character development during the main plot of Higurashi. While we're told directly about her hidden femininity and shyness, it's also evident that beneath her tough personality, she's both cowardly and her grandma's doormat (though since we never get to see her perspective, we have no idea just how much of her bravado is fake). The incident with Satoshi in the backstory reinforced her desire to protect the people she loves, but she still exhibits many instances of weakness in the main story, such as being unable to help Satoko whenever Teppei returns, or generally when she fails to protect her friends (i.e, Shion killing her friends causes her to break completely, or when K1 dies in Minagoroshi and she drops her tough personality completely, even begging Takano for life).

Notably, in Minagoroshi, she was too scared to go against her grandmother even for Satoko's sake, until Keiichi and Rena stepped up against the village council by themselves. However, the greatest instance of her true strength is at the very end of the series, when she's prepared to take Takano's bullet (totally contrasting her aforementioned death in Minagoroshi), which is arguably the first time she went from being a brave persona masking cowardliness to true courage. So despite chronologically being the first to gain character development in-universe, she's also the last one to really evolve past her weaknesses.

Kira hate is understandable. Not only was it bad overall, but the tone it set/presentation of fanservice really wasn't fitting at all for the series.

I can't find it in myself to lewd anything from Umineko or later, but complaining about Higurashi fanservice in particular doesn't make a lot of sense. Also, I can see a lot of the lewd situations in fanworks actually happening considering the main cast are hormone addled teenagers who display that a fair amount.

For me the biggest issue I had with 7 early on was the lack of most of the meta world characters like Battler, Beatrice, Erika, Dlanor, Evatrice, Ronove, Virgilia, Ange, and Lambdadelta (though the last two at least showed up for the Tea Party). It's not that I don't like the human characters, but ditching so many of the best characters made it harder for me to get into the Episode at first.

Is this episode canon? I know it's written by Ryukishi and uses the original sprites, which is everything I absolutely need to consider it canon. But is it canon in terms of the plot? I mean, could it happen in the regular Higurashi universe we are familiar with? Or does it have different elements, pieces or motivations that just don't exist at all in the usual arcs?

Is it supposed to have happened halfway through Rika's journey? I don't really like the idea. Is it supposed to be a completely separate world that Rika didn't go through? In that case, Rika shouldn't have any kind of meta personality. It'd be refreshing to finally meet the original Rika. But it would also destroy one of my favorite theories about the "reality" of all these parallel worlds. Does Rika somehow die before we can tell whether she is pure Rika or meta-Rika? That sounds like the best option, since it lets the reader decide.

If I'm not supposed to know any of this because of spoilers, please don't tell me.
