Core 6k (finished the 10k sometime before N2...all that newspaper vocab is really useful there).
After that lots of reading mostly.
The first game I finished in japanese was Trails in the Sky, around 1.5 years in. I've played the game in english, and I had access to an english script, but it was still horrible.
That said, I learned a lot from it and went on playing the rest of the series (including the untranslated Crossbell games) after that.
For listening, I'm still using seiyuu/anime radio shows and podcasts that I'm listening to on my commute (around 30 minutes one way, which is the perfect length for those things)

What does 苺大福の箱が落っこってきて初秋 even mean. Literally it's "first love of the fallen strawberry candy box" I guess. It's in the context of a story that was written so could it be a fanciful literary title maybe?

I’m at the end of my second year of Japanese at university and we are currently finishing up the Hiyaku textbook.

I’ve found that learning the grammar hasn’t gotten much more difficult, but reading has been killing me. Specifically because we are expected to be able to read and comprehend intermediate length sentences more quickly now.

Maybe I’m just out of gas, but it has become such a struggle. How did you guys deal with making the jump from smaller sentences to more complex ones? I know persistence will pay off, but I’m open to any strategies you may have adopted specifically for intermediate length sentence comprehension.

Protip for the beginners/intermediate out there. I just realized something while using anki with Genki lesson 1 vocabulary. The word for Anthropology (じんるいがく) has given me trouble remembering. I searched up the kanji for it and I recognized 2 kanji in it, 人 and 学. so using that I was able to think of the beginning and end of the word. only leaving the middle of the word for me to remember.

This may not make a lot of sense but i figured it may help.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that look for familiar kanji in a word and it might help. Kanji aren't as scary as people make it out to be.

After three years without studying (I studied between 2011-2014), I decided to go back on track. However, this time I won't go to a class and I will study at home.

During 2011-2014, I worked with Minna no Nihongo I and II (up to lesson 38). I learnt approximately 130 kanji and I sat for the N5 exam (which I passed). After I stopped attending lessons, I kept practising up to now. However, I did not add any new knowledge (maybe some new vocabulary).

My objective is to sit for N4 this December. It would be great to sit for N3, but it might not be possible due to time constraints. The time I can spend learning Japanese per week is between 12 - 20 hours. If everything goes right, I will be ready for N4 by the end of August.

Now here's the thing, I'm actually a guy.

I act out Japanese conversations in my mind all the time.

So I got roped into the Wanikani meme a while back, at the time the organization and being able to just effortlessly grind kanji without needing to think too much appealed to me and I got through like 20 levels then tried to read stuff and realized to my great disappointment that a lot of the words they taught me weren't actually all that useful, and even worse they taught me none of the kana only stuff which makes up a lot of actual reading so I couldn't read much of anything. Dropped everything in disappointment a few weeks later after my motivation took a serious hit, now it's been some months and thinking of getting back into it but just with a normal anki deck, what recommends most? Just Core2k/6k/30k/whatever? Or is there something better now? I'd like to get into reading/mining too but I feel like I should at least get some of those early kana-only words since I feel stunted without them

I've always been an A and B student in school, everything just came naturally. About 3 years ago I started learning g Japanese. Hiragana and Katakana were easy, only taking me a couple of hours. Then kanji came. This is where things fall apart. I can't wrap my head around kanji. I've tried nearly everything, but my brain just doesn't work with how kanji works. I always read out loud in my head, and I go fairly fast, but I just can't do that with kanji. Even if I know the meaning of the kanji, I don't know the pronunciation and that screws me all up. After 3 years I can only seem to know 200 kanji. I just can't do it.

This leads me to my next problem. Kanji has been discouraging me, and recently it's made my clinical depression a thousand times worse. I feel absolutely stupid for not understanding something that so many other people have "gotten" in far less time just worsens my depression. As a result, all of my grades have dropped significantly, and I'm constantly in a horrible mood. I study about 5 hours every day but it's just not working. The only reason I'm still going is because everyone and every Japanese guide always says "Don't give up!"

I keep going because I refuse to accept that I'm not capable of doing something, even though it's been absolutely horrible. Should I just quit before I literally kill myself out of discouragement or go against the "Don't give up" attitude everybody tells me?

Sorry if I sound stupid.

If it's to talk with family or friends you already have or you're doing it to advance your career or some shit like that then that's a perfectly valid reason. Wanting to do it to talk to the general public is fucking retarded because you can just take off your rose tinted glasses and have mundane conversations about whatever in your native language without wasting time studying anything

This motivation is simply not enough. People who think like that would spend an hour or two per week at best studying Japanese, but will brag to all of their friends about how they are "learning Japanese" and how much they love Japan and so on.

>You have no fucking place to be calling literally ANY motivation to study a language a waste of time.
Of course not. But that's because everything (or nothing) is a waste of time. But there's a difference. Japanese media is different enough from English media that you can't just replace one for the other. On the other hand, having a conversation with some 30 year old salary man about how boring your life is will be the exact same anywhere you go.

You're wrong, I live in Japan and so I have "mundane talks" with people every day. The average person talks 11 minutes a day, so already that's above an hour assuming you aren't a hikki which if you're in Japan you're not because you need to be working to be allowed to stay in Japan. Assuming you're an English teacher, which you probably are to be completely honest, you're talking a lot more, maybe 20 a day if we're being serious. So 20*7 is 140 which is already 2 hours.

Now let's add actual discreet study time, because yes talking to people isn't going to magically teach you the language. It's practice, and REALLY good practice at that. I can tell you that by speaking to people every day I quickly learn what vocab I need to learn ASAP because I find myself thinking, "fuck I wish I knew how to say this" about the same thing twice or three times in one or two days. This allows you to really focus your discreet study.

tl;dr you are actually an authentic retard and you shouldn't try talking about things you don't know, this like.

Ain't that fucking obvious that living in a country and talking to its citizens, one would practice a language! If you're in Japan, or have a connection to Japan through career or family, then you have already got all the motivation you need. The question is, if a person decided to learn Japanese on a whim, which kind of motivation can support him through this process. And then, anime, manga and VN is your best bet. I would deeply respect a person studying Japanese to read its classic literature, but can't imagine there being a lot of such people. And I can't imagine a person superficially loving Japanese culture learning Japanese, because learning it requires a fuckton of effort.

English has preposition but Japanese 助詞 is post position.
for example,"I moved something to there"(私はそこへ何かを動かした)
so if I directly translate this sentence to Japanese by literal order.
it will be "私は動かした 何かを へ そこ。".
this translation is a bit wrong at へ そこ.
in English,"to" is front of a noun but in Japanese, へ is behind of a noun.
I thought if I wanted to understanding it,translation should follow likely way too.
for example,"私は動かした 何かを to there" or "私は動かした 何かを (処格→そこ)”.
however, there is only for a literal translation.
私は何かをそこへ動かした。
this is sounds natural than it.

>Yeah, I don't think so. Being part of the same lineage doesn't equate to respect, admiration or any sort of requirement to act in a certain way.
Showing respect to ancestors and elders makes one a better person. Case in point, I respect them and have a life, you don't and you're a useless waste of space NEET.

>Showing respect to ancestors and elders makes one a better person.
Showing respect to people based on merit and being able to make such a judgement is what makes you a better person. I wouldn't be so confident that you're anything other than a giant sack of shit, judging by the amount of time you spend making baseless assumptions about people you don't know and shitting on them for no reason.

I'm trying to help more than anything. Also, thanks to the actions of your millions of ancestors, you're here today. It's not a matter of merit, it's a matter of being grateful for that, and for having contributed in developing the world we live in.

No, you aren't. You're a disingenuous, worthless person who shits on others to feel better about himself. The archetypal 4chan cunt, made worse by how brazenly stupid you are, judging from the second sentence in your post.

If you prefer learning how to procrastinate instead of just learning Japanese. People who do what you're proposing are the eternal 出来ない who simply flash their notebooks full of scribbles in public or in front of friends to have "wow you're learning Japanese! You're so smart!" comments. It's narcissistic and doesn't help learning the language, it only inflates your ego for nothing.

The context of the quote is explaining why アイン殿 knows some fact.

Sort your life out, then get into other time-consuming hobbies like learning a pointless language. Priorities are important and knowing how to sort them is what separates failures from winners.

Encouraging people to not be NEETs isn't a gimmick. It will not only help them in life, but also for learning Japanese. Many people have said on here that they progressed faster and learned better after they stopped being NEETs. So yes you have less time, but you make better use of that time and have less anxiety in general because you live better when you're not a NEET. It's pretty much the best advice posted in this thread, and it should actually be in the guide since so many people have the misconception that more free time as a NEET is better for language learning.

This is objectively false. I'm sadly not a NEET, but breaks are the favorite parts of my life. I learned the basics of Japanese during Summer. I didn't even leave the house most days, and I could progress at an optimal pace. Now I barely read some VNs at the weekend, watch seasonal anime, read manga on my phone and do Anki every day. It's more than what some people do, but I wish I could do more. If I were a NEET, I would also learn to draw, make music and so on. Guess you couldn't even call me a neet since self-education was always my thing in a way. It seems like institutions just force me to learn things I don't want to learn.
