I have an idea for a cute boi doll, but currently am at an impasse regarding the clothing style to fully encompass the 'sweet but depressed without looking edgy as fuck tumblrmeme' look.

Mine indeed. Had to dig deep in the hard drive to find these photos. you can tell photography wasn't my thing back then. According to the date on the file this was from 2010. Sadly I parted with mine long, long ago so I don't have one to sell. And after checking ebay the prices aren't friendly either. Better than most "collector" prices but still inflated.

Overall just couldn't get into it or bond very well. Strange head sculpts (huge foreheads, flat faces, smaller than a dd head), the thinner arms and legs, posing just feels stiffer to me.

The only good thing about smart dolls is they're very light weight and they come with a support stand (at the cost of having awkward ports on their back).

I'm sure there's other people who sold their dds and got an SMD instead or maybe Azones.

The problem with finishing and painting in a localized area is that unlike putty and surfacers, the raw plastic is not 100% opaque. So even if you can match the color and finish, and carefully fade off the paint it will still be detectable under some circumstances. Otherwise you'd have to uniformly paint the rest of the doll to match. Honestly, compared to overtly mechanical joints hairline seams should hardly be a distraction.

As far as wigs and clothes goes, you don't have to go to Volks for those, there's plenty of companies that makes wigs and clothes that fit DD bodies. I'd check out Purple Dream for sure and maybe Coolcat for clothes, then possibly Crobidoll for the wig? If the wig is heat resistant then you can pretty much style any long white wig to have pigtails.

Alice's Collection maybe, you're looking for 1/3 SD shoes. There's also a ton of Korean doll manufacturers out there (like Sadol and Leeke) that will have shoes that fit but often you'll have to figure out what body sizes they have and which one of them is the closest to DD size (50-60cm in height) and find shoes for that body.

There's also sites where people put their girls up for adoption second hand in private sales or if you want to deal with a company, mandarake is pretty popular. Volks has a long list of girls that are either their own custom girls or licensed girls that come in a wide variety of sculpts so it's always healthy to dig thru their site and see who they have and maybe hunt them down on the second hand market. But as for Catherine yea I'm gonna concur with you both and say 07 has the ideal look imo. Plus it's going to be a super easy head to obtain.

I think pinks like Luka's contrast better with a richer skin tone since it balances out the yellow tones and looks healthier. Not sure how any of it plays into the art, but they probably just went with what looks best.

I actually don't like the way DD Miku's default hair color interacts with any of the DD skin tones mind you, I think it's a shade too green and most dolls I see in it look kinda washed out to me, so take what I say with that bias in mind. I think Snow Miku (even normal in Snow's wig) looks worlds better than regular Miku because that wig just makes any doll look yellow/ill IMO.

A large aperture really lets you take portraits anywhere, blurring that background. Thing is I have fallen out of the dunning kruger effort hard. Now that I have lights Cakes difficult to photograph eyes are now photograph-able.

Also this is from the 5D and cropped way more then i should have because this was a photo of Cake and Cherry, but cherry was not looking at the camera right.

Early on there were a couple things I was told in not so kind words:
1. If the object is stationary there's no need to use ISO's faster than 100.
2. By extension of the above, use a tripod. Aside from providing a stable exposure, it allows you to make tweaks to your variables (exposure settings, light modifiers, etc.) without changing the shot.

That said the 5D classic is a great learning camera: full frame, basic nuts and bolts, no distracting bells and whistles and doesn't break the bank. Had fun with mine before getting something else.

I totaly am useing a tripod and iso100 on M mode. I also got remote triggers for both cameras. I am not going to lie as of now I see no reason to get another camera I love useing both the 70D and 5D.

Also I have a ton to learn about lights I can't even put in to words how much, but I don't use flash. I use three lights but only the panel is defused, I have desfusers for the other two on the way. I really prefer useing lights over flash. Becuse it lets me light things carefully and see exactly what the image will be.

I added a very cropped image (because you don't need to see the Christmas tree in the room) of one of the many lighting set ups I used this one was a failure, but when cropped you can see all three lights. These lights were moved around a lot but I feel I learned nothing i just ended up with some kinda well lit shots and some bad. The panel can attach to the hotshoe so those other shots are that.

As you use them more you might find them limiting. Hotlights are subject to changes in shutter, aperture and ISO while flashes can be controlled independently, as their illumination only lasts 1/1000 of a second, and are usually only affected by ISO and aperture. Google keyword: shutter drag.

In other news I did take some photos of Cake taking photos by the river. I got some fun pictures. But nothing kills a shoot faster then your girl face planting into the snow and damaging her face with the little camera she is holding. This is her contemplating life after her fall.

The damage seems to have been a shiny spot from removal of the matte sealer. I seem to have been able to fix it but I am not happy about it.

The image was taken with a Canon 70D I also shoot with a 5D. She uses a 5D MkIII.

Actually those are the colors your camera captured* All I did was correct the underexposed sky and increased the saturation to define the otherwise drab treeline, before dialing it back. Otherwise, no color channels were adjusted individually to bring one out ahead of the other.

Snow is tricky to tricky to photograph. That scene is 75% white so your camera incorrectly made a decision to capture less light.

*Regarding the colors, in the absence of light the camera sees much less color than you'd expect. Very similar to how everything looks gray and flat during twilight. Compound that with the data discarded when a jpeg is rendered, and you have very little to work with in post.

Now that this thread is going into /p/ territory I'll make a quick camera guide for those who consider buying a camera to make doll pictures.

Dolls usually don't move. That has a big advantage because you can nearly always use a tripod.
When you use a tripod you don't shake, no movement means you can use slow shutter speed, slow shutter speed allows for low ISO, low ISO makes better images.
You do have to use manual mode or aperture automatic because you camera doesn't know that you are using a tripod and will pick a fast shutter speed and high ISO.

What camera should I choose? Try it small first. Most likely you don't gain much by buying a more expensive camera, try it small first, you can still buy a more expensive one when it is not enough for you. You will most likely save a lot of money that way.
Spending 300$/€ one one camera is way less than spending 1000$/€. In the worst case you wasted 300$/€ (when you don't resell it) but in most cases you save 700$/€.

Level 0:
Try using your phone with a tripod. Try using manual mode on your phone.
Flagship phones, even older ones, have really good cameras nowadays.

Level 1:
A normal point and shoot. There are many very good ones.
They should be enough for most people but the cheaper ones have mostly been replaced by phones and the more expensive ones cost as much as DSLRs.

Level 2:
Entrance level DSLR or DSLM.
In the hands of most people entrance level DSLRs are as good as the expensive ones.
A mirror less camera (DSLM) are a good alternative to a DSLR.
Now we are in getting into the price levels of a dollfie.

Level 3:
You can pay lots of money for a professional camera but that doesn't mean you have to.
Older ones like the often mentioned Canon EOS 5D Mark I are still good cameras.
You could also buy another dollfie or two for that money or maybe just a lot of cute dresses.

What ever camera you get try different things. Try different ISOs, 100 is not always the best. Some cameras don't lose any quality at 200 or even 400.
I use 200 ISO all the time with my EOS M10.

I'm not a camera expert, I only visited /p/ a few times, read some guides and took some pictures.
