The story is good, the music is great, the cast is likeable, the cases are a bit weak, but I consider DR to be an entry level murder/mystery VN, so for that level, the cases are fine.
It's not better or even on the same level as Umineko, but if Umineko is 10/10 then DR is 9/10.
Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean it's not good.

Never really had a problem with the gameplay per se, only thing that really annoyed me was the hangman's gambit mini game. Cases in 1 are bit obvious, still liked the "twist" with Junko at the end.
DR2 is still much better imo, the cast is more interesting, cases are a bit more mysterious and it has luck man.
Nagito alone makes DR2 better than 1.

Inganock, Kara no Shoujo and RGD ring a bell? They were quite remarkable and well-written and I don't recall them forcing over and over generic anime stereotypes on you.

I have plenty of western novels under my belt, I can't even get into sci-fi or fantasy anymore because they don't cater to me anymore and I'm willing to persist on literary realism.

It's not really that hard to know why something is famous and liked for the majority of people whom doesn't play that much and just want something easy and aesthetically pleasing. I can't shut down my brain and not question anything I read or watch, and anime is a well-known medium where you must shut down your brain most of the time, same goes for most fantasy titles. I like games with intentionally cluttered/busy UIs.
The humor is laden with epin reference jokes, and the characters and plot are total popcorn, with practically zero weight to any of the antics they get up to.
But when the director cites Illbleed as the kind of game he wanted to make, that's all intentional.

Decent if only as a bi-annual source of new Masafumi Takada music.

As others have said, DR1 is just ok, interesting story and graphical style with great music but incredibly easy cases and a cast that's by and large filled with assholes.

DR2 improves on it in pretty much every way, there's only 1 or 2 characters in it I don't like and the cases are incredibly convoluted right from the getgo. It's pretty much required to finish DR1 before playing DR2 though.

V3 kinda drops back down to DR1's level except instead of the characters all being asswipes they're all just really fuckin' stupid and most of their talents aren't really that interesting.

How can people say DR2 is better than 1? There are more obnoxious characters in 2 than 1 and their obnoxiousness is far greater, I couldn't fucking stand 2 and I loved 1.

Never played it but I like the artstyle and designs.

You can't create same atmosphere on a bright shiny sunny island as you can in a locked up dark school.
You can't expect me to believe that anything in DR2 matters, when it turns out that none of the deaths there actually matter, because it's all VR.
Case 2-5 doesn't magically fix all the issues with this terrible game.

Because it's edgy in a wacky fun way. Higurashi is edgy and fun, but not wacky (though I'm not going to say one's better than the other - Higurashi was really popular in its heyday). Then you get shit like 999 which is neither wacky nor fun.

I think the SA TL played a big part in it too. People were all memeing and theorizing as we learned what was going on bit by bit (since it didn't come out stateside before then), which got people way more attached to the character than one would think.

I liked that whole mental breakdown thing with Hajime at the end, but I agree that I liked 1 better than 2.

For me, 2 just didn't seem as... "put together", I guess you could say. Most of the characters didn't feel like they meshed with the setting and I felt nothing towards them one way or the other.

Aside from that: Despair Girls was retarded and I still haven't bothered with 3 yet.

You know what would've been cool? If the killer in each act had to witness what they did before they died. Or even everyone who died in general. That plot point just did n't get used half as much as it should have.
