Most of these are guidelines you should follow on any board, if you want to be a quality poster.
I personally don't like rule 5. Sarcasm is just hateful and pretentious in my opinion. I'm fine with non-sarcastic irony though.
Also, irony doesn't work without reaction faces, so rule 3 and 5 contradict each other.

/jp/ would still have a lot of discussion but would probably ultimately still be full of generals because the only way to stop threads being pushed off by shit idol threads and touhou dumps would be to consolidate into specific discussion threads of their own. Its culture would probably be for the better though, however it would still be in a large part /v/ - Weebshit, with people who couldn't discuss their niche games in /v/ coming over and spreading whatever /v/ habits. .

/v/ would complain forever about generals, but probably have a higher quality than it does now. A lot of generals would still be discouraged from being made and would probably have died off long ago. /vg/'s horrible mindset would probably be nonexistent. There would probably be insane wars for space when some new hyped game came out, got like 20 threads and kept pushing unneeded generals off the board.

- Using his knowledge of Imageboards to directly provide valuable data to Project ReCaptcha, rapidly improving the proficiency of the Google Skynet powered fueled by millions of anonymous shitposts for free.
- Going on TED talks and talking pretentious shit about how facebook and google lack freedom, yet always pulled the "4chan was never about free speech card" against his own criticisms.

I really really really like this board

>> No.18802235

If the mods got ballsy and deleted a few of the worst boards for like, two months, without saying anything, before restoring them, most of 4chan's problems would run off to some other hellhole.
If everything was retooled back towards being about Japanese stuff and hobbies, than that would be even better.
We could be rid of all western porn boards, and with it mountains of low-grade posters, and probably support a dedicated JAV board instead, with guidelines similar to /h/ and /e/.
/pol/, /tv/ which bring in offsite culture could be done away with, along with the mountain of legacy boards that aren't hobby/japan-focused, cutting away the circle jerking of /r9k/ and [s4s]
/b/ could be reorganized into anime/random, as it was, after a period of purifying and temporary deletion, hopefully ushering in a new era of OC and shenanigans, as was case during [s4s]'s creation.
A similar reforging of /v/ could be done, if one were to forcefully remerge all of the videogame boards into one, it would undoubtably become so intolorable, with such a high density of posters, that it could suffer a mass exodus, but deleting it temporarily could also clear out the tourists and less-dedicated off-siters as well.
As far as 4chan's population goes, at this point in time, more than ever, would the individuals affected by these changes be unwilling to fight back; the masses of these boards, especially the phoneposters, don't have the autism, will, or know-how to commit any extended raids or hacks, and will dissipate if the administration can keep up their side of things for long enough.
Boards are the only actual structures here, get rid of them, and their "cultures", like the most overused memes, will die in the onward march of anonymity

>> No.18802349

You can't really fix 4chan short of Nazi level moderation and/or banning porn altogether for a while.(not because NSFW is bad, but because it attracts retards who only care about porn)

There doesn't need to be a JAV boards, JAV people need to fuck off to /t/ and their JAV threads which have discussion AND torrents AND you can post NSFW AND last for fucking ever. e.g. >>>/t/653102 >>>/t/743011

I have read the image in the OP, I realise that this site is not exactly like usual forums, I know generals aren't seen well arround here, as threads should not be like chatrooms and I think people do not appreciate tons of threads dedicated to one character with nothing else going for them. I find it hard to recognize which threads do not fall under those categories though. Call me a moron, I am confused enough to call myself that as well.

>what exactly is this site supposed to be like?
Well, it was originally made to talk about anime without being harassed for liking anime and also to not be judged on your user name/post history/join date, so the simplest thing would be to not act like you're on a normal forum with karma/upvotes and stuff. However old 4chan didn't have a problem with acting stupid and ironically writing shit like "zomg lmao!!11!", whereas that's so low down the irony pole as to be regarded as actually unironically posting like that nowadays. I mean pic related is like the level of old 4chan humor, so there's never really been a high posting bar. All those people talking about gaia/my anime list/animesuki/tumblr/reddit and shit are just people trying to distance themselves from their past for internet cred or blaming everything they don't like on some site they irrationally dislike.

The problem is people(read: normalfags) think being anonymous means acting like a jackass without repercussion at all times. Contrary to what retarded users have done in this past that people mistakenly believe is the case for all users, this site is not a troll cave, a meme factory, an internet hate machine, a den of dangerous pedos, or turbo-stormfront. Anime/Japanese things are also inherent to this site, regardless of if people on other boards hate it or not.

The biggest problem is all boards tending towards becoming porn dumps, /b/, /gif/, /r/, even /a/ was (and is the reason moot made certain boards into blue boards). Of course people still dumped porn anyway occasionally, and probably still do. Moderation is strict on /jp/, and the users report things a lot too, because this board has a great potential to just become Touhou porn dumps, VN porn CGs, "hot glue" on dolls and figs, and JAV. Also because /jp/ is (originally) a mash of people who were exiled from /a/ and /v/ in the past before they turned around and started to flood into /jp/ after their own boards became unsalvageable shit. Also because /jp/ is not about Japan, Japanese people, or Japanese life.

>how should I behave?
Really, just following the global rules is enough. https://www.4chan.org/rules
Also don't take shit too seriously. People taking shit seriously is why people barely post copy-pastes or other silly things anymore and think everyone's baiting them.

>I find it hard to recognize which threads do not fall under those categories though
Barely anyone posts threads that aren't those or shitposting. Just make a thread about something you want to discuss, let it die when discussion dies down, and don't act like how people act on /b*/x/pol**/r9k/soc/sci/fit/sp/v/a/vg/s4s/qa/trash/ when you're not on those boards.
*New /b/ I mean, not hypothetical good old /b/.
**People from /pol/ who proselytize on other boards, I mean. People actually on the /pol/ board tend to act like old /b/ half the time, but still don't bring that here.

As for post content, most /jp/ topics are also /vg/ topics, but people need to realize they can still post about them here.

It has actually become much more lax and breathable compared to even 2016; I mean sure it's strict compared to other boards but I see alot of stuff slide that would normally only be seen as a trashcan on Warosu; this thread included. I guess the zeal of the janitors has declined as much as the userbase here.

Thank you very much. I think I understand well enough what happened to this site. It just got old and now suffers from most of websites' old age illnesses. Moderation treats written rules as absolutes too, doesn't it? I find this anonymous system a great tool, it's neat to be able to post (almost) anything you like without need to care about backlash. You can do stuff like that on usual forum, but it takes too much effort, here you don't need to do anything.

>people barely post copy-pastes or other silly things anymore and think everyone's baiting them.
That actually strikes to me as pretty odd. Why would you care if someone is baitng you? No one can say whose is that reply you made, you do not represent anything. You can literally contradict yourself in reply to your own post with no one noticing, why would you care if someone calls you out on being stupid?

>Barely anyone posts threads that aren't those or shitposting.
So all that talk on threads that are shit is just your usual metawhining, driven by nostalgia most likely, is that right? Remembering "good ol' days" as waaay better than they really were, which leads to complainging about pretty much every thread there is? Yeah, nothing too abnormal.

Well, thank you again for your response. I guess I'll just behave as I did years ago on the interwebz, using the anonymous system as I please. In boundaries of common sense of course.
This place seems like fun.

>Why would you care if someone is baitng you?
Because it erupts into autistic flame wars or meaningless shitposting if you take the bait. So people, especially /a/ and /vg/, types have grown to think anyone talking about things they don't like, and especially posting in a general with any sort of idea unapproved of by the community, must be someone baiting for replies. People can't just say something silly to be silly. They have to be trying to troll you. People cannot disagree. They must be out to get you. People can not be uninformed. It's just a trick.
I don't really understand that led to them thinking like that. I don't think it's just unique to generals either, but it seems to be particular to /a/, /vg/, and probably /v/.

>Moderation treats written rules as absolutes too, doesn't it?
Mods honestly seem to do whatever the fuck they want. That's one thing I'll agree with shitposters on, there are definitely ones that create and protect certain things they like. Although, it's only Janitors that have to enforce rules as written. Mods are free to interpret.(e.g. ban you for "off-topic posting" because you said something unflattering about an idol they like) Honestly, if they treated rules as absolutes, 4chan would be completely different right now.

>So all that talk on threads that are shit is just your usual metawhining, driven by nostalgia most likely, is that right?
Yes and no. Anyone talking about "good old /jp/ days" probably means the period between 2010-2012 where people just shitposted all day and the board was nearly unusable under a wave of dumb junk. However people who try to pretend the ever increasing number of idol threads aren't becoming a menace are delusional. They're not technically off topic but they're reaching the point of making a thread for every idol like people make threads for every touhou.
Personally, I feel only the Monstergirl and the Horizon thread absolutely don't belong here. Monstergirls because it's like having a kemonomimi general or a maid general. It's not something that needs a general thread. Horizon because LN discussion has never really taken off and every other LN with an anime related thread is capable of posting on /a/. I don't get why their generic big titty girls and mecha novel thread decided to stay here.

On the other hand, /jp/ did used to have a diverse amount of topics, MMORPGs, Doujin games that weren't Touhou or Touhou derived, /jp/ board cultural in joke stuff, Erogame discussion, and other stuff. Almost everything like that went to /vg/ when it was made and left just Touhou and Idols making up most of the threads, with a bunch of generals forced from /a/ and /vg/ by mods who wanted to protect them. However those people nostalgiaing are those nostalgiaing about being able to make off topic shitposts all day and their dream of turning /jp/ into 2D/random. These people are also responsible for /jp/'s shitty spinoff boards, shitting up warosu's ghost, and posting in /qa/ and /bant/. They basically want /jp/ to be /a/ without rules. Which is what /b/ was at one time, but I'm not sure they're from that era. (/jp/ was made up almost entirely of old 4chan posters tired of the rest of the site at the start though.)

Originally it was the text-only counterpart to /g/. As time went on it became a haven for shitposters and funposting that was tangentially related to programming. Think a marginally more intelligent /bant/ or early [s4s]. I think that SICP posting originated from there but I'm not entirely sure. During /jp/'s funposting nadir in 2011-2013 there was a bit of an overlap between the two communities, which developed into an informal alliance between the two boards against the more popular normalfag-infested /a/ and /v/.

the text boards themselves had virtually no userbase, and moot disabled posting on all of them on April 2014 to focus more time on the main image boards.

Some generals (read: not idolshit) are decent and it's where you can actually see discussion at a steady pace. /jp/'s shitposting is closer to our brand (which is quite close to 2005 era /b/), while /a/'s is closer to the new age imagereddit shitposting common to the rest of the main imageboards.

What that basically means is that /a/ shitposts by having a deluge of completely worthless shit, but isn't interesting in the slightest, or simple garbage that gets repeated simply because it is annoying. Example: '>implying, image macros, and other shit that would have been funny in middle school. /prog/'s and, to a lesser much extent, /jp/'s, shitposting consist of having a few different shitpost methods with at least some thought put into their creation (for example, the `How are breasts attractive' thread, which is completely off topic and ridiculous, but is well written and somewhat interesting none-the-less). Ideas are formed on a questionable premise, then expanded upon until it reaches it's absurd logical conclusion. It may also take the form of making a huge deal over a minor detail, or assuming things that are false and writing a long critique based upon that, or making provably impossible demands. Contrary to Standard 4chan Shitpost Model (S4SM), where the intent is to annoy, the intent of our shitposting is to entertain, provoke discussion, or simply as an exercise in writing.

Since the fall of Usenet, w4c style shitposting is currently considered some of the best in the world. Even the great usenet trolls have migrated to /prog/ to bask in the glory of our shitposting. The UN is currently trying to classify /prog/ as a world heritage site, but their action may come too late. W4c shitposting is currently an endangered species, due to invasion by the imagereddits, a dwindling population caused by suicide and incarceration, and moderator action. Some have speculated that moot is trying to kill all forms of shitposting that do not conform to Project Canv.as. So far, the best defense available is to derail stupid imagereddit threads with kopipe and JEWS, as well as giving harmful advice to homework threads. It is considered rude to call a w4c style shitpost in conformance with board standards bad.

It is thought by leading scholars that the reason for the Shitposting Schism was the rapid growth of /b/ due to the media exposure of Chanology, when an influx of underage Digg users caused 4chan to explode. Others claim that the shift happened even before that, during the first influx newfags during 2006. This school of thought holds that the first influx gave rise to the loutish behavior of `raiding' and other bullshit, which was a direct cause of the second major wave. Once /b/ was populated almost completely with underage children, the shitposting culture changed to it's modern form, where it is a competition on who can be the most annoying. The cancerous population then colonized nearly every other board on 4chan that could possibly appeal to it's socially well-adjusted population. Mentifex, an expert in the field, built the Artificial Unintellegence ANDRU to model the thought process of the imageredditors. Despite a few setbacks, the project has largely been a major success.

Since world4ch was not linked to on most boards, and since the average imageredditor ignores anything that isn't a reaction image anyway, the area was left mostly unharmed by the change of shitposting. It remained much more subtle, and resembled machine generated spam less than the imageboard brand. Since /jp/ was at one point full of autistic sexually deviants (a natural pairing for /prog/riders) and were far more computer literate than boards such as /g/ or /b/, they were naturally drawn to programming; /prog/ and /lounge/ (which had a shitposting style slightly different than /prog/, until two retarded children took over the board) was an obvious destination. Since it still wasn't enough of a secret club, they moved off site to places like 4-ch for a few days before returning to /jp/ with a more cultured outlook on shitposting.

Lately I've taken to mass reporting/flagging cancerous neurotypicals on twitter, youtube and facebook as a way to retaliate against these pieces of shit for popularizing otaku culture and using it to build their own e-celeb careers. I go mostly after people who abuse touhou but there are also pieces of shit like some /pol/fag bodybuilder who's gimmick is that he wears some Chinese bootleg hoodie covered in ahegao crops from asanagi dojinshi. I also go after socjus tumble people so don't ride my back about politics, I just use politics as a pretext.

I've convinced a couple of cancerous kids to give up recreating their accounts but since 2017 there's no end to the scum tide. It's like trying to exterminate cockroches with a shoe, for every account stealing otaku culture that I ban four more pop up.

I'm fairly convinced that sinking any more time into trying to hound these retards off social media is pointless since our interests have long since been thoroughly normalized and commercialized for people with zero interest in anything other than tertiary shit. When I come here I only see shadows of a happier past and I have a hard job trying to connect and have good conversations with other /jp/sies. We might lock eyes at Comiket or Nakano Broadway one of these days, but i feel that those of us who joined in 2008-2010 would be better off evacuating from much of the English-speaking weeb internet.

I wasn't around at the time but was Touhou really a problem on /a/ that it needed its own board?

>> No.18906906

>>18906744
It's more like /v/ was "no weeb games" and /a/ was "touhou is not an anime"(while posting a bunch of other shit that was not anime) and the touhou posters were invading threads with "touhou hijacks" and spamming images.

I know this is a pasta but why do people glorify shitposts? Everywhere I come across (even r*ddit, from the snippets I've seen does this shit) glorifies shitposts like they aren't what they are, shitty posts that take absolutely no effort to make.

>> No.18918613

Evil past

>> No.18918945

>>18918600
Because the days of epic pastas and making personal effort to customize injokes and memes are long gone, and people can only make low effort shitposts for replies. It's all they have, so it's what they find remarkable.

Copypasta like that one are an endangered species of content in an internet infested with illiterate third worlders whose OC creation abilities are limited to twitter screencaps, adding blur effects to reaction pics and coming up with the 10 millionth variation of 'cuck', Of fucking course it would be put on a pedestal and worshipped.

>> No.18919090

I think he meant "why is that copypasta glorifying shitposts"? not why is it itself glorified.
