Play them in chronological order.

Imperishable Night is the best entry point in my opinion. Easy, very high quality across the board. Visuals, music the works. Also pretty understated gimmick. I'd pick between it, Perfect Cherry Blossom, and actually Double Dealing Character for high quality/low difficulty.

There's nothing wrong with holding off from EoSD at first considering it lacks a few niceties of other titles. If you're getting used to the genre, it's not an ideal starting point.

If you've never played an STG before, I think the fourth, seventh, and tenth games are good places to get your feet wet. They have little to no gimmicks, easy patterns, and they do a good job at teaching the fundamentals.
If you have, pick whichever game looks most interesting to you and see if you like it. Every main series game can pretty much be experienced standalone.

>>18779010
The patterns are more random and hitboxes are different compared to later games. It's not a bad starting point per se, but I think LLS better accomplishes everything EoSD does, and PCB and MoF's gimmicks aren't too distracting for how beginner friendly their patterns are. Your other examples I agree with, but for slightly different reasons.

>People recommends EoSD for a reason.
People usually don't recommend starting with EoSD though. Probably because if you really think about it, no character hitbox, no enemy indicator, tougher patterns, and no point of collection or something similar to it can be frustrating. A lot of people just give up on it if they're starting with EoSD. I know I did, and my friend recommended PCB instead (which offered a better experience).

When I was starting 2 years ago everybody were telling me to play EoSD and nothing else and they were actually right because the idea that I would start with something like Mountain of Bombs or any other easy game with hitbox is actually pretty goddamn terrific to me. Don't know why are people suddenly pretending that 6 is a bad start because I'm sure it wasn't like a year ago.

Start with EoSD until you can get past Meiling, then start playing PCB. After you've played it for a fair while (I beat PCB with two setups before I even got to Remi in EoSD for the first time), move on through the games in sequential order trying each one to find the ones you like. Don't play on easy mode. Start out using continues until you're good enough to 1cc on Normal, which will probably take a while. Took me a few months.

My point is the presumption that this is in any way a new idea is entirely wrong. A lot of people had a frustrating experience starting with EoSD. This is why it's commonly said that you should skip it if you're just getting your feet wet. It's not a new idea. Not at all.

>> No.18779509

>>18779406
I should probably formulate it better. Sure it isn't a new idea but I have a feeling that nowadays there's lot more people that are bashing EoSD as the first Touhou game. But maybe it is just me, who knows.

>> No.18779525

>>18779509
You have a bias for it so you probably notice it more, that is common with anything.

I personally am not bashing it when I say it's not a good start. I just look at it factually based on its features and the common player experience. It's fine to play once you've gotten used to it, I think. Not a bad game, just a bad start.

>> No.18779545

>>18779359
I'd say however much you want. The more you play the better you'll get, even if your progress hits slow-downs at times and it feels like you're not improving. I try to play at least a couple hours a week to stay in practice, but some weeks i get into a game and sink dozens of hours into it trying to get to where i want.

Subterranean Aneurysm
Literally my first game and regretted playing it

>> No.18781562

I started with EoSD and I think its the best start. It's hard, I know, but it lacks gimmicks and trains you to not relly on them, like the border break in PCB. After you clear EoSD, you'll be good enough to clear the other games.

>> No.18782091

1 to 16 no other way

>> No.18782191

It depends what you want and what you're willing to put up with. The lore is really complicated so even playing them in order is confusing.

1-5: Really primitive and tough. More for hardcore fans.
EoSD: A big step up from the earlier games, though still primitive. Simple scoring system, but tough.
PCB: More complex risk-reward system. Probably the most "fair" of the early games in terms of bullet pattern difficulty.
IN: Almost certainly the easiest, first to feature spellcard practice. Loaded with characters, though which might get confusing.
PoFV: Two-player versus game, a whole different beast.
MoF: First of the modernized games, has a back-to-basics feel, although it might be a little TOO basic. Most gorgeous and best music in the series, IMO.
SA: A nightmare. You literally go to Hell and the final boss uses nukes. Not recommended for beginners.
UFO: One of the friendlier games, the gimmick is fun and rewarding and the difficulty is challenging but not overwhelming.
TD: Red-headed step child of the more recent games. Feels like ZUN was just phoning it in for this one.
DDC: Overall good quality, but rather complex and the last two levels are dramatic difficulty spikes.

That's all I've played up to.

>> No.18782293

EoSD: simple resource system, smooth difficulty progression, balanced shot types, easy last boss. Has RNG patterns and no visible hitbox (which might be a good thing for a beginner to not lock your sight to it)
PCB: simple resource system, abundant lives, borders which can be cheesed if you know how, huge difficulty spike from stage 4. Memorization-heavy last boss. Unbalanced shot types. IMO worst character movement of all games (reimu 2slow, sakuya 2fast, marisa is ok though)
IN: free deathbombs, simple resource system, huge difficulty spike in stage 4. Somewhat unbalanced shot types. The biggest game in terms of content: last words, multiple teams with the ability to play as solo character, 2 final bosses.
PoFV: not a classic STG. Good game on its own.
MoF: simple resource system, scarce lives, most free bombs in all of 2hu games - you can bomb through literally everything. MarisaB is bugged and can clean bosses in seconds. Somewhat easy last boss. Best overall music.
SA: simple resource system, abundant lives if you don't die on spellcards, MoF-tier bombing. Overall very challenging difficulty. Most unbalanced shots ever (ReimuA is leagues better than any other shots). Not recommended for a beginner.
UFO: meme resource system, abundant resources if you can abuse it. One of hardest 2hus. Not recommended for a beginner.
TD: meme resource system, very scarce lives. Overall lowest difficulty, except last boss which you can spell practice.
DDC: meme resource system. Unbalanced shot types. Worst overall music.
LoLK: rape-tier difficulty. Unbalanced shot types. Absolutely not recommended for a beginner. Good music though.
HSiFS: simple resource system, requires you to abuse bombs and releases to breeze through it. Godawful color contrast. Not recommended for a beginner.

Mist Lake is my single least favorite song in the series, Waggysaggy's theme is more of a clusterfuck than Rumia's, and I don't particularly care for anything in stage 3. That said, I like everything from stages 2 and 4, the title theme is one of my favorites in the series, and you don't need anyone to tell you how fantastic the songs from stages 5 and 6 are.
DDC is in a weird spot for me, sporting both some of my favorite songs ZUN has ever composed and some of my least favorites.

>>18783142
I couldn't agree any more for LLS and MS, but I can't say I think the first three games aren't very good. HRtP is a slog to play and is easily my least favorite in the series, SoEW has worse hitboxes than EoSD, and PoDD just feels like a worse Twinkle Star Sprites.
But I really have to emphasize how much I agree with you on LLS and MS. I hate how quickly people dismiss it because they're for PC98, they do everything EoSD does but better. And you're right about the aesthetics; combined with the music, they create a unique atmosphere most of the later games don't have.
