V3 was basically a mini Umineko in terms of overall metatwist. The difference is that the goats weren't an omniscient audience in Seacats, but confused readers looking for the enigmatic truth.

The culprit in that case was the Truman's Show per se, and the audience were passive accomplices.

The Steam version has a slightly better translation, but it's still mediocre at best and they censored an important scene.

Also on this topic, it really is a damn shame that a completely non-erotic use of nudity is being treated like some horrendous taboo. It is pretty damn important for the scene in question. What's worse is that they don't even take into account much worse implications that are important and far from tasteless writing. The PS3 version also had it removed. Legal reasons, I bet. I can live with such a change, it's still one of my favorite tracks that gets the blood pumping.

>Also on this topic, it really is a damn shame that a completely non-erotic use of nudity is being treated like some horrendous taboo. It is pretty damn important for the scene in question.
The nude sprite for Satoko not being shown is also likely due to legal reasons. I agree with what you're saying, but it's too much of an unnecessary risk to do otherwise. I would rather have such a small piece be censored if it means more people can read it, especially when it's such a tiny part of the whole story. There's more to Satoko than her being nude for one extremely brief scene, it's really not that big of a deal.

Of course! In the end, it's mostly just the purist in me that wants things portrayed as originally intended. I think striving for the original experience isn't necessary in media, but if changes improve upon nothing then it just feels like a waste.

The latest release of Higurashi seems simple enough to mod, it probably wouldn't be that hard to do it yourself and keep it faithful.
Higurashi isn't an eroge. Releasing an optional patch exclusively for one sprite change of a naked underage girl would just cause drama. There were already people that bitched about the possibility of it before that chapter was re-released, and if enough word gets out about there officially being an option then it seems likely to turn people away from never picking up Higurashi or only sticking to the anime.

We had so many Umineko threads in both /a/ and /jp/ during the time it was really freaking popular in here, it would take you forever to read enough to find some info way back in the day, especially since most of them didn't even get labeled as generals of any kind.

In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, this general for example was a thing that started only 2 years or so ago in here, as for quite a while, if you tried to make a general for Umineko, /jp/ mods would just delete it.

Just think of it as Jessica arcana being the moon and she being the only blond chick in the family, thus being similar to Beato or something, that'd be the short version. It would be too much of a hassle to search for old Umineko threads, believe me. It's better just to accept you lost the golden age of theorizing madness train.

Woah...I guess we really were Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni™ all along...

One question about Umineko: I'm playing it for the first time, just started episode 2, and I've noticed that, unlike Higurashi, the perspective seems to flip flop between characters a lot, like when Natsuhi enters Kinzo's study and gets complimented by him in episode 1, when Eva is thinking about her life with Hideyoshi in their room right before they get murdered, or at the start of episode 2, with Shannon and Kanon's perspectives. I've heard Umineko is a fair play mystery, but I also know that one of the 10 commandments of detective fiction is that the culprit cannot be someone who's thoughts have been followed by the reader. For Umineko, are those rules set in stone, or do very quick looks into the minds of other characters 'not count' as breaking that rule? I can't help but feel that if the story keeps switching perspectives like that, it'll narrow down the list of culprits too much.
I realize all of those characters die, but the possibility of a faked death from one of them is always there.

>but I also know that one of the 10 commandments of detective fiction is that the culprit cannot be someone who's thoughts have been followed by the reader
The only commandment remotely similar to that is
>The detective must not himself commit the crime.
They are general guidelines more than rules anyway, Higurashi broke a lot of them

I couldn't properly convince Rokkenjima to stay around, which is really boring for me, but if someone wanted to put an effort toward something, I'd definitely assist and be at their side throughout it all as long as they kept trying!

If Ryukishi improved as a writer from Umineko to now then expect a preeminent WTC5! Haworthia already proved he'll resume with total philosophical profundity, and it'll of course have tons of heart and wit behind it, too. It'll be a really fun game!

I'm not sure how Lambda and Bern are supposed to correspond to the Will desu. Aren't they one of those meme dualities where both sides are actually the same thing mediated by and in opposition to itself Hegel likes so much?

Certainty doesn't exist, because the possibility of a miracle that turns everything on its head is always there. Miracles don't exist because something that's certain to come about can't be called a miracle.
The true certainty, therefore, is the certainty of miracles, and the true miracle is a situation in which what appears certain is not miraculously turned on its head but maintained. They exist in and through each other. That's why it's love!

Madoka and Higurashi were written for different formats and went for completely different things narrative-wise, so I'm not sure they could even be compared in regard to who did "super time loop eternal tragic fate ultra despair girls" better. The solution to Homuras problems was a literal deus ex machina (though a pretty well executed one), while Rikas problems were resolved in a way that could for the most part be explained in terms of the characters growing and being able to help each other out in ways that were closed off to them before, which is definitely less of a cop-out as far as justifying the way the tragedy ultimately plays out goes.

I do like Madoka though. It has a cool visual aesthetic, a great soundtrack and most of its characters are well written, and that last one especially is a lot to ask of a 12 episode show.

I believe the idea is that it's the name of a french opera, with the letters for love removed, and that the lyrics call the 'play' being narrated on stage by Clair out for being "An opera without love", which might make it yet another illusion. That, or it just means that Clairs narration is the truth, but without any love, which would also make sense since she's a character created by Bern.

Wait, that's his actual logic?

Like, I don't think he is wrong about symbolism in the music, since we already found some other one in this very track (castrato), that (un)surprisingly, he didn't at all.

I just think he must be retarded not to understand what could this mean if it even was a thing, because he interpreted the story in an unbelievably autistic way not even he seem to be able to explain.

If he was to use the "Claire" theater in EP7 as the representation of the song (even though I'm pretty sure it only happened during the submarine scene and the Golden Land invasion by pirate Erika), he would most likely find something along the lines of:

Bolero de Ravel is Claire's performance. Boléro epitomises Ravel's preoccupation with restyling and reinventing dance movements.

Claire representing Yasu wrote countless partiularly varied tales of murder and conspiracy.

This literally means "without love it cannot be seen". Not something like "cutting "Love" gives you the name of the song, but the opposite: With love, you can finally see the spectacle.

Why would anyone going with this after reading the whole series not consider this to be the obvious option, and instead, somehow find a completely different meaning which should be logically the exact opposite of the intended (what would you gather from Bore/Boer Ral compared to what you would gather if you added love to it? Without love, you only get something that makes no sense, such as the title Bore/Boer Ral. With love, you can see it refers to the Bolero de Ravel).

In the end, you could even interpret as "without love, you cannot see that this song was a homage to Bolero de Ravel".

This passage from World as Will really intrigued me (I was simultaneously reading Umineko): https://i.imgur.com/zS7zO0y.jpg.. Lambdadelta and Bernkastel embody forces of nature that motivate characters, and while Umineko explores the magical cosmology as a reader excoriation, the destructive boredom is critical to the voyagers, whose constituents are the spectators/readers in and out (us) of Umineko. The voyager is born of hardship, seeks fleeting happiness, rests in languor while the illusion persists, and suffers until the next game, suspended by their immortality.
Magic is the ineffable and impalpable motivation which precedes Schopenhauer's will and everything else. Since it's ineffable, we can only discuss its effects and never it for itself, like the elusive mechanism of the hand of the clock's movement—creating 1 from 0, the sea of nothingness. It's said this is the domain of creators, but all magic is creation from nothing.

Nagarjuna's metaphor offers the same idea. "As a magician creates a magical illusion by the force of magic, and the illusion produces another illusion, in the same way the agent is a magical illusion and the action done is the illusion created by another illusion." Haworthia expanded on this perforating and percolating magic, actually, with it's eighth track (https://soundcloud.com/mgraveyard/08-vocal4-sample).). Sky of Sunyata is a hymn precisely to Nagarjuna's Madhyamakan magic, who was also born Hindu (this is how we connect him to Schopenhauer, who loved the Upanishads Nagarjuna knew well).

As for the Lambda/Bern duality, yeah, they are a duality, but that's like settling on Dante's influence extending merely to Beatrice/Virgilia's names and the stakes.

In that case, read his Ficciones, first, and here I'll preemptively ease you into them with light hints of what some of the short stories share with Umineko. So generous.

Oh, and most of these are metafiction.

Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius: The process of worldbuilding in storytelling, epistemology, the story morphing to the reader's impressed illusions.

An Examination of The Work of Herbert Quain: Reader criticism (and scathingly on the critic) in face of unconventional narrative.

The Library of Babel: Loosely epistemological, a godly library of stunning infinitude, Lambdadelta's own, beloved infinite monkey theorem, the nature of the reader on the text he/she reads.

Death and the Compass: Really a spellbinding murder mystery with eerie occultism, but it's also totally excellent by its own merit so definitely look forward to it.

I'm very excited to read your thoughts.

well, from what I could gather, he is also using the lyrics for Claire's image song as an argument, I really can't understand what the hell Bore Ral has to do with Claire in any way, as the song isn't used in her parts iirc.
in any case, as for the lyrics:

"I am just a happy reader,
speaking the lead’s next lines
in a costume as white as snow
because, after all, I love you.

My hair flutters, and when I open up my mouth,
I tell a red-stained
fantasy.

It’s the star’s final act. This is my exit,
but still, I cannot sing the truth,
Footsteps ring across center stage
that just plays a song of beautiful illusions.

Even if the blade reaches my lungs,
I will never speak the truth.
Golden flower petals
overflow.

I am just a reticent reader
speaking after the witch,
reading aloud from the witch’s script
because, after all, you are my audience.

I avert my eyes, and when I open up my mouth,
I tell a blue-stained
mystery.

The witch was toyed with. This is my exit,
but still, I cannot expose the truth,
Footsteps ring across center stage
that is just charmed by cruel illusions.

Even if my breath is stolen away,
I will never speak the truth.
And just like that, my breath stops.

Your eyes watch me from the audience.
Please, do not let anything change.
I am just a powerless reader,
who speaks of nothing but fate.

The endroll signals the beginning
of the end of my turn,
Footsteps ring across center stage
that plunges into the dark depths of hell.

The time that seawater filled my lungs
was the one time I spoke the truth, calling out to you
as you just sank to the bottom of the sea."

All this image song means is that she refuses to state reality, and isolate herself into cryptic illusion to cover the words she is meant to profer otherwise, as a representative recipient for the Witch's true self, aka Yasu.

Willard explicitly stated this before comencing to destroy all of her mysteries by explaining their realities in an equally cryptic way... unless of course, you are being spoonfed by the manga, where he outright gives all the answers in quite a definitive way.

Now then, does he have any other argument for us to destroy? Any other symbolism he is twisting?

As long as he doesn't come here himself and gets disencouraged to argue about it any further -for being intimidated by our numbers- we shouldn't lose much fun from this desu

It's always particularly more humiliating to have it shove in your face in a place people give you even a bit of credibility, like in that shitty group.

Ah--- I can already feel the estasy! The moment when he will have all of his theory destroyed, while we savour his anguish and despair for being such an incompetent... And while he still tries to save his theory from crashing and burning to the ground, we will continually get new evidence that destroys any of his baseless claims...

Truly delightful!!

I for one was introduced to the series by a friend's recommendation post in a literature group a 3 years ago. Truly is all he told us about, and I envy all of you who could theorize it with other readers in real time as the episodes were released.

And adding, try giving a look in some of Murakami's books, for an interesting and very poetical and raw take on magical realism as a genre and tons of deep musical commentary.

I would sell some of my organs for a visual novel adaptation of Kafka in the Shore by 07th Expansion.

He definitely, in his own words, leaves many things up to the readers' interpretation though, so keep that in mind and don't expect rereads to answer all of your main questions like Umineko does.

Michael Ende is still one of my favourite authors to this day, even though I've known about him since way before I got acquainted to any 'literary' authors, and all the other children's books I've read really can't compete with what I've gotten to know since then. His narratives center around the strange nature of fantasy and imagination (I feel like they're the kind of thing especially Ryukishi fans might enjoy), the battle between personal meaning/ introspective, philosophical values and the kinds of values we are generally brought up with (trying very hard to be efficient and successful in the way others expect us to, pursuing these things with great greed, envy, vanity, etc.).
Depending on your taste you can start either with the Neverending Story (If you've watched the movie, don't worry. Except for the shared superficial aesthetics the book is nothing like it.), which uses metafiction to take a closer look at the relationship between fantasy and the everyday ordinary world we imagine ourselves to live in, or, if you want something more low-key and comfy, Momo might be a good start.
>>18806290
Murakami is also nice, though desu books like a wild sheep chase and wind up bird chronicles should not be read but listened to while you're cooking, drawing, playing the guitar or something along those lines. It's just pure aesthetic background noise.

I can definitely see some influences he may had had in case Ryukishi were to have read it before writing Umineko. Or at least, how similar the structure of the "Neverending Story" original book may have had in the novelization of it by Kodansha Box (we have different writing styles separating a certain part of the meta, in this case, a theatrical reading for the Purgatorio Tea Party portions).

i wonder if, in the chance Ende was alive to read Umineko, he would have appreciated just how many detailed narrative layers it has and how it seems to be a sucessor to his line of work, literature-wise -as to say, a very similarly executed metafiction in some regards-

Momo was surprisingly (or maybe unsurprisingly) successful in Japan. I think it really hits on the Weltschmerz of being torn out of the slow communal life of pre-industrial times which is particularly prominent in Japanese culture. The early parts of Higurashi's chapters often feel like a dream of what youth might be like in a less hectic, less efficiency-oriented society.

Well, here we have a little problem, and a big solution.

It seems like the lyrics are not presented as the original, probably because of the 200% broken Italian/English/French some of the songs have.

And instead, what we get is a japanese translations for them with the true meaning the lyricist intended, as so requested by him.

I'll reiterate this recommendation >>18802489 because Ficciones' format is truly ideal for the new reader and Borges is an excellent writer who shared pivotal ideas with Ryukishi. Borges' short stories are very clever, too. There's an alluring sharpness to his wit in the same way there's a curious urge to test a purportedly sharp knife/blade.

I don't post on /lit/ but I just like this stuff. Actually reading Invitation to a Beheading right now and I can find parallels here with Umineko, too, at a glance in the distorted image of Umineko's characters with the message bottles and the illusory change in Yasu's perception with the most recent disguise.

Anyway, definitely read Ficciones!

>>18806111
Oh, no, no way. I didn't predicate any of my foray into Umineko on a rejection of Hegel's ideas, and if I did, then that rejection should expressly and decisively reinforce the gestalt (rejected qualities are part of the whole after all; spinal absence is required for any exactitude on invertebrates in the taxonomy and biology).

It's really fun though. Umineko retroactively improves the more you read, and I think it's really telling on Umineko's strong and profound ideation. If Haworthia's any indication then WTC5 should satisfy again with formidable profundity and improved dexterity in the writing (versus Umineko).

I never posted here much either but I might start sticking around a bit cause it's pretty fun.

The neverending story is my favorite book of all time. Momo is pretty great too.

I hate how awful the movie adaptation is. When I recommend the book to someone, they never feel like reading it because they "already know the story" or because they are "not interested in fantasy novels". No matter how many times I explain that the book is nothing like the movie, they always ignore it and watch the film instead because it was their childhood.

Such an amazing book and nobody ever reads it because of that stupid movie. Most people assume that it's just a good children's adventure novel and that's it. No wonder Ende was pissed off and made a video shitting on the movie.

The actress that played the Childlike Empress was super cute IRL, but they made her look kind of ugly in the movie. The book described her as the most beautiful little girl fatfatfat had ever seen. And she had shoulder-length snow white hair. And she fucking disappeared forever in the second half of the book, as you slowly realize that she's actually an amoral creature and Fuchur almost calls her a bitch. I didn't feel any of that from her character in the movie.

The Episode 8 manga does more than just outright reveal the truth to the readers, it has additional and rewritten scenes that are very touching and clarifies the message of it. Even though it's a message one can figure out, it's a very important one that needs to be made clear and this tries to make up for it. Plenty of people couldn't get it and missed the point.
I agree that it would have made more sense to never have given away Beatrice's identity so blatantly, but it's unfair to completely disregard the manga version and not even give it a chance when there's plenty more to it than just that.
