I think I’m at an impasse
I studied Chinese to a high level in the past so I know most of the kanji used in Japanese and the others aren’t hard to pick up. readings are trivial to learn. I know a lotta vocabulary too: I just have trouble following conversations, complex grammar and reading passages

these are on traditional chinese but it’s the same concept. in fact, I would recommend studying Chinese people’s handwriting over Japanese because they generally write both nicer (aesthetically) and faster. the latter link specifically addresses this character pair.

additional tip: change your Japanese system font to a 楷体 one (regular script, Chinese reading is kaiti so many fonts have this in their name.) find a good one without a lot of errors. generally Japanese ones are better because Chinese ones have to be designed to support the mangled communist characters as well and thus let a lot of errors in.
it feels less hi tech than some other fonts and isn’t aesthetically pleasing on a computer screen (on a nice woodblock print tome is a different story)

It's basically what Win10 does to my fonts. IPAexGothic is rendered with jarringly uneven line thickness, it's painful to look at together with how much empty space the font tends to leave. I do think it has the best proportions though. I've been able to get it to render nicely on Debian.

Noto is more resilient to Windows 10 making my fonts look like shit, it's just kind of too thick and slightly blurry for no good reason but it's a dependable thickness, not like IPAexGothic which looks as if phasing in and out of reality, as though printed with insufficient ink. I agree Noto is a bit too high, and it's not as brilliant as IPAexGothic. It fills the line better though when both are well rendered.

I don't mix anki with reading, anki after I hit 20k words is more like a personal dictionary and guide that tells me what I forgot (readings are exceptionally important since they are usually not seen in text). Anki cards introduce meanings of words and help you memorize them efficiently. I thought about it today when I considered how we identify clauses vs how it is done in Japanese.

"I don't remember her going to the store" is a pretty simple thing to comprehend, but Japanese has it much easier in that it would explicitly noun-ize "her going to the store" which leaves less room for interpretation. I write reports in Japanese for a living. As far as I know, nips aren't taught proper writing techniques in school. Natives often write shitty run on sentences because they just suck at writing, so I end up having to split, fuse, and reorganize paragraphs to make shit more coherent.
