>"Is 'x' subbed?"
>If you have to ask, no. Don't bother us about it either. Most people here already know Japanese and are very knowledgeable about their culture, so it's best to assume as much.

>"Hey, have you guys watched this Kurosawa, Ozu, Oshima, etc. film???"
>Maybe, but this thread isn't about "kino," there are better places for such discussion. Even /tv/ discusses it regularly if given the right circumstances. This thread is mainly for Japanese TV and Movies that only other Japanese people and obsessive foreigners would know about. >"Is 'x' subbed?"
Well as far as I do agree that some of these questions could easily be avoided, by taking a look at d-addicts for example, in case of some obscure stuff it is kind of a legitimate case.
>Most people here already know Japanese and are very knowledgeable about their culture, so it's best to assume as much.
I highly dislike this part. It's highly elitist, and it was proven multiple times in older threads that there are quite a lot of people here who aren't fluent enough about in Japanese to be free from subtitles.
>Maybe, but this thread isn't about "kino," there are better places for such discussion. Even /tv/ discusses it regularly if given the right circumstances. This thread is mainly for Japanese TV and Movies that only other Japanese people and obsessive foreigners would know about. Basically, only people that are deep down the weeb rabbit hole would actually enjoy.
I agree that discussion about movies that are very mainstream in western media could fare better on /tv/, but artsy stuff that wasn't promoted outside of Japan or asking about related works that weren't that popular is not something that should be unwelcome in this thread.

I think that the biggest problem here is the assumptions about how big and enclosed this community is. These threads often verge on the line of getting archived. I think we should welcome people who want to get more into Japanese tv and movies, even if they don't speak Japanese or their first reason is something mainstream. It's not like we don't have space for that.

>> No.18703438

Is Over the Fence movie any good? It's made by the director of Linda Linda Linda.

>obscure stuff
They can still google it or whatever search engine they use. It's mainly to reinforce good habits in people.
>elitist
Some elitism is good in order to keep the community in order. Opening the floodgates so that everybody can come in will just welcome in bad behavior. The worst of which is ironic weebs with their American colloquialisms and blatant disrespect of Japanese culture, even if it is pop culture. Just take a look at any idol general and it's filled to the brim with shitposts. People who are into this stuff already gave up any pretense that they're not a weeaboo and might already be on their way to learning the language. It's mainly so people can discuss esoteric Japanese culture that can only be known if you obsess over it while not having to worry about everyone else being on the same page.
>artsy stuff
To be honest, I'm not sure if including movies into this thread would be a good idea since people would constantly be questioning the vague line that's drawn between the more popular fare. Making it strictly drama and variety shows would keep things focused but it's only a suggestion since I'm not too sure myself. Although, I'm curious about what specific titles you're talking about when it comes to obscure artsy stuff.
>These threads often verge on the line of getting archived.
I'd rather it get archived if it means a negative community will form for the reasons stated above. We have years of experience making other generals and it would be great if we made this one an actual good one. Getting just enough people to make it comfy without opening it to everyone is a good balance. Having an actual pastebin will be good enough to bring in newcomers that actually care about what we talk about.

Not sure that's the best example. In that fandom, this kind of stuff is not weeb exclusive.
>To be honest, I'm not sure if including movies into this thread would be a good idea since people would constantly be questioning the vague line that's drawn between the more popular fare.
No deal. First of all: there are movies related to dramas and stuff. Second: you don't need to question it really. If you couldn't have a proper discussion about your movie on /tv/ or you think you won't be able to have it there, you can try here. If a specific topic will start to dominate the thread, you can move it elsewhere.

Also look at >>18703871
I don't see anything wrong with welcoming new people here. You watched Kurosawa's movie, liked it and now want to try something different from Japanese cinematography? Welcome. You don't need to be a weeb. You, to be honest, don't even need to be an otaku to post here. There are people here who are, and this is where they can discuss their passion for Japanese movies and tv. You can bring something to the discussion, or need an advice while you are getting deeper into the subject (that's not obvious and requires an "experts" knowledge), without being one.

Basically, I will sum up what was stated few threads back:
-this kind of thread would not survive on /tv/ - people are too few and post too rare. /jp/ has a more suitable tempo for this.
-this thread fits the theme of otaku culture
-If you have something that can have its own successful thread, go and make it (there are Gaki threads from time to time, you could make a Kurosawa thread on /tv/ etc)
-If your post would fit some other thread (idol shows for example) you can post it there.

It's good that we're discussing this. It's important that we're all on the same picture before we start to shape things up in this general. New people will definitely come but it's mainly the deplorable bunch that I'm worried about. Too many thread topics have gone to shit because of that.

What's funny is that these threads are actually terrible.

I don't know why it's called a TV thread when 99.99% of stuff that gets discussed here is drama, and almost all of it is translated.

Basically, this is a thread filled with women. I think fap shit and idol threads are the worst cancer around, but having this dogshit general around actually impacts occasional interesting discussion, instead of being an auto-hide formality. Maybe if /jp/ actually had some more Japanese speakers this thread could be fun, but the few around are more likely to just tunnel vision on VNs.

I'm not too familiar with these variety shows but I've seen quite a few clips of Downtown. I saw that recent one about "No 荒れる成人 can be a virgin", which was pretty funny.

But if you think you have it rough with people only discussing TV dramas that have been subtitled, imagine how it feels to be a Jap YouTube watcher. Most of them are almost exactly like variety shows, with challenges, dokkiri, "investigation" segments etc, but in a digestible 10 - 15 minute format. They're more or less isolated from all the cancer that plagues Western Youtube, with politics and edginess.
They're never mentioned anywhere here despite their huge rise in popularity in Japan, and the only ones that do get mentioned are virtual youtubers, but most people who watch them need subtitles if you go through those threads.

>> No.18705960

>>18705802
The problem is that the English speaking fanbase will always massively dwarf Japanese speakers here, and the kinds of things that get translations are only the "wacky weeb" stuff that draws a crowd.

I'm not a huge fan of nip youtubers, I like Hajime because his stuff is always short and interestingly child-like, and a few LPers who run weird doujin games like Abu, but a lot of the rest come off as fairly obnoxious. It's not a format I'm hugely interested in, because variety shows are usually cut into 10-15 minute chunks anyway, and the staff involved cut out stuff that doesn't work, or remove dead air in a much more professional manner.

Most channels are bad at editing with the jump cuts every few seconds to cut dead air, but there are some who are quite good.
But don't you think the obnoxious argument goes both ways? I think a lot of people are put off by how loud and in-your-face variety shows are. Especially when a lot of the "funny" parts end up just being a bunch of old men yelling over each other in kansai-ben, trying to tsukkomi at something? Or when you get the big letters flashing on the screen repeating what the person is saying, and over-the-top EHHH reactions in the small corner camera whenever they show something on the VTR?

>> No.18706131

>>18706101
Oh sure, there are some Japanese celebrities I really can't stand. But variety shows usually have a panel of presenters. It's a very different environment to what is usually a 1 or 2 person Youtube channel. Youtube seems more about the presenter than it is about the material, while variety TV is very different, because the material is all done by the staff, and for the presenters, it's their first time seeing most of this shit too.

Well, the recommendation pastebin is pretty bad. What do you guys recommend in terms or thriller or dramas? I'm looking for something with dope cinematography.

>> No.18779535

>>18778524
I feel you, man. As a fan of crime thrillers, Japan really doesn't have too many. The plotline either starts okay but goes bananas or is completely over the top from the beginning. I think it's because the country is so safe that it's hard to write these stories with any sort of authenticity. So the writers look at fiction as their only source of inspiration. You should look at SK movies as they have plenty of those but don't discuss them here, /tv/ has usual threads about them.
>cinematography
Only Japanese films tend to actually work hard on visual storytelling. Plenty lists on the internet. J-Dramas tend to have a lot of "product" mentality towards their shows so actual artistry isn't a priority while filming.
From the pastebin, the only thing I can really recommend that fits your criteria is Hanzawa Naoki. It really is that good. Even though it's filmed in 29.9 fps, don't let that fool you, it tries a bit harder when it came to visual storytelling and the story is a novel adaptation so that's good already. A lot of exciting thriller moments if it's your first time watching too.

Amazon finally released their Japanese originals Businessmen vs Aliens and Kamen Rider Amazons internationally. Only two years too late to pull in any of the viewers interested in them back then. It got me thinking: Will Japanese tv ever be taken even a little seriously internationally? Netflix and Amazon are at least interested in creating original content for a Japanese audience, but just dump them on the international sites when they get around to it. Yes. It seems so far they're copying the same crimes from the original, which some of them have a real life cold case in Korea. Based on the first episode and the 11 episode run it seems like they're cramming them in instead of having that suspense the original created.

I just watched this. Is the shock value really that necessary to presenting the problem nowadays? I feel like a lot of Japanese movies nowadays try to ride the "weird factor", to garner attention instead of really paying attention to the production value. Personally, I blame anime. A lot of its live-action adaptations keep the quirks of the source material, that can work in manga/anime format, but stand out too much (and not in a good way) in the live-action. This tendency spreads and as a result, more and more people find this acceptable in a medium where it doesn't really fit. Thoughts?

>> No.18868879

>>18868782
Instead of blaming anime, why don't you blame the directors and screenwriters for their incompetency of writing good stories?
So far, the only good screenwriter that has successfully turned Nisio Isin's quirkiest detective, NigeHaji, quirkiest manga editor, and a tsundere female journalist into believable live action counterparts is Akiko Nogi.
The worst example of live action film I can think of right now is Bakuman film. The story aside, most of the characters were butchered to the max.

Most of those are manga adaptations, just like the anime was.

I both loved and hated Bokutachi so much.
Who I hated ended up loving, never wanted to punch a jdrama mc so badly before, it was a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the entire thing (for me personally).
Kubota is so damn great, he can play such a big diversity of characters.

I liked this movie. The black guy was likeable and I enjoyed seeing the main girl getting carried around. I liked it better than Gesu no Ai or, say, the latest Shunji Iwai movie which had some similar themes...
About the rest: yeah it's a movie with Yakuza violence, sex drugs cults and all that stuff but it's one small budget movie; I'm not sure there's actually a trend, if there is I'm not convinced anime has anything to do with it, and ultimately it doesn't matter to me because shock value movies is like any genre or niche it can be shit or good like the rest.
Come to think of it says "based on a true story" at the beginning so maybe it's more realistic than edgy, I don't even know.
