Read what you enjoy the most and read as much of it as you can. Emotional engagement is the basis of the powerful 'compelling' content meme and the proven most effective way to create stronger neural associations involved in language acquisition.

There is so much content available that there is no justifiable reason to force yourself to read anything if you're reading for pleasure.

I've only been studying Japanese for about a month, but my brain has finally "accepted" that there is a LOT of shit like this in the language and suddenly studying it is a lot more enjoyable. Instead of getting confused about the fact that the sound "どく" means "poison" on its own but is also a constituent of things like 読書、独身、 独占、and 独特, I find it incredibly amusing and go out of my way to see what different homophones/homonyms exist, and to try to relate it back to the original sound even if the meaning/kanji is clearly not the same.

I'm a couple weeks in and already feel like I'm drowning. My retention gets worse by the day. I had to hit again 61 times today. I always get down to 20 or so cards that I just don't know and have to keep hitting again until I eventually get some right and slowly wittle them down. Then I get to do the same thing with mostly the same set of cards the next day. I'm seriously struggling not to cry by the end of my reps. How does いっそ work? Based on on the first part it feels like it's saying you use it when the thing from a set of options doesn't meet your expectation.. but むしろ seems to mean the opposite?
Here is むしろ:
二つの物事をくらべ合わせ,あれよりもこの方を選ぶという意を表す。どちらかといえば。いっそ。 「会えないくらいなら-死にたい」

This isn't a democratic vote. It was only to see how heavily the scale tipped one way or the other so that we can accept the change. Seems like it's more 50/50 now, so OJTers need to make their own autism general. OJTers are the autists since they're the ones who couldn't leave well enough alone and let the name be DJT, they just had to get trigged by the title enough to change it. So maybe with them gone, DJT can finally be less autistic and with a little less shitflinging.

~時点で is used to express "at the point where X is the case." It doesn't have much to do with time in this usage, and is just pointing out that before considering the current topic, one detail that has been overlooked should be considered.

I know people say to make your own decks but this should be an example of why you shouldn't do so without guidance. Flashcards are supposed to have as little information as possible on the front. "Hints" are pointless and waste your time, both making them and bothering to use them. If you need a hint to remember a card you don't know it. You cards also just kind of have way too much information in general. Flashcards only train you to perform a single task.

The current topic is whatever context that line is being said in, and the thing that the speaker wants to draw attention to is that his listener is challenging a beginner (presumably the speaker) to a game that he (the listener) is already skilled at.

It's just a possible use case, I wouldn't try to pin in to a template. 時点 is just a flexible word, a general meaning is still there. It's just often not literally referring to a point in time but rather a more figurative "when"

To rephrase it into something a little longer
そもそもこれって、お前が初心者相手に自分の得意なゲームを取り出した時点で
既にずるいよな

If you want more examples just try putting words plus な時点で into google in quotes. This is something that's better learned through exposure, since it's just a matter of how people phrase things in Japanese.

No, why would it be?

The main problem with kanji decks is that the English keywords are too similar, so you don't know which kanji to write. This layout has the English keyword along with the readings for the kanji and words it is used in.

There is a lot of information, but I only test myself on the ON reading and 1 KUN reading. The rest is mostly for the first time I see the card or if I get it wrong.

Can't tell if this pic is bait, but this is pretty much the direct opposite of how my cards are.

I don't use Anki, just physical cards I make myself, but I just put individual words on the front and don't ask for all the readings of Kanji. It's been easier learning on a word-by-word in-context basis than trying to cram a shit ton of meaningless Kanji without any context or memories behind them.

Also my job forbids personal electronic devices/phones, so this is the only viable method for me.

Through my methods, I just happen to know the various readings of many Kanji through sheer serendipity as opposed to trying to cram every possible reading onto a Kanji from the start. If you learn 水族館 and 水曜日, then later learn the word 水 on its own, it's easier to digest and mentally "accept" than if you do the dumb meme way.

Another example - 大変、大丈夫、and 大きい all have different readings of 大, but I know the individual words first and then the readings of 大 by extension.

tl;dr learn vocab and be pleasantly surprised when you realize that you painlessly acquired the Kanji readings

As I've not opted for the RTK+Core decks method, I can't comment on it, but I instinctively feel that more organic methods are better on average. Is the AJATT/RTK/Core decks meme efficient? They certainly appear to be. In an ideal setting with an ideal learner, it's probably very fast. However, I wonder how it actually is to suddenly jump from several months of Kanji absorption to reading stuff. I guess you'd find out quickly whether your retention was actually any good.

I think comparing Kanji to knowing the alphabet is a bit silly though, as it feels like something different entirely.

It's true when people talk about "knowing" kanji it's usually on a much deeper level than when they talk about knowing the alphabet.
The alphabet gets taken lightly though. If you want to get down to it, "knowing" the alphabet all the way through is a super complex matter. On the outside it's just 26 different pieces of information, but when you start sticking them together to form words it becomes the same deal as Japanese. So I think there is an analogy to be made there, but it mostly comes down to "english and japanese are both languages that have writing systems wow would you look at that"

>I wonder how it actually is to suddenly jump from several months of Kanji absorption to reading stuff
Nobody should make a sudden jump like this and expect to actually be able to read. The methods like RTK and core2k are brute force ways to try and give yourself a foothold on the language. The only way anyone is actually going to make progress on reading is by taking in the language and practicing reading, which I assume is the organic method you're talking about

It's not really that this organic method is "better on average," the actual case is more like, organic input learning is the True Path, but you start out as an infant and instead of crawling you have mommy yomichan and grandpa heisig take turns pushing your stroller until you're old enough to climb out

You're actually free to change the keyword because what the keyword is isn't what's important, you just need a unique "handle" for each kanji and a story that connects the "handle" to the keyword. Though it's better to have a keyword that is close to its "meaning".

But I wouldn't go around changing a whole bunch of them. Sometimes the weirder keywords are the easiest to remember.

is it bad if my mnemonic (if you can even call it that) for certain words are just random impractical shit? I am only about 900 into core but for some with a lot of strokes like if a word is 2 kanji with a bunch of strokes I stop seeing the kanji themselves and just mnemonicize it to "that word with all the fucked up shit going on in the kanji" which probably works for now but when there are 10 that I 'remember' by that mnemonic it might not be so easy.

And the same thing for words with lots of kanji like 3 but especially with 4. I don't really see them as the 4 kanji that make up the word (for the most part) so much as I see it as a 4-kanji word where the first/last kanji is X kanji and recall it like that. But same story, as soon as I find another 4-kanji word that starts/ends with X kanji, I'm fucked (assuming that a word like that exists).

I feel like you know the answer. Yes, try to come up with something different for each one that you wont mix up. Even if its a super ridiculously specific story, as long as you remember it that means its working. In fact, specific is better because then you wont get it mixed up with other shit. Turn as many strokes as you can into a part of the story.
I've done the same thing. Often times with new cards ill just sit there staring at it until i come up with something. My average time per card is fucked because of it kek.

>so much as I see it as a 4-kanji word where the first/last kanji is X kanji and recall it like that. But same story, as soon as I find another 4-kanji word that starts/ends with X kanji
This completely fucks me as well. Any sort of list stuff like counters, days of the week, etc takes me forever to get right. Especially because of all the fucking exceptions.
I've got no advice for that part except to just keep trying to make parts of the unique kanji in that word a part of the story. For example, I remembered 日曜日 because it kinda looks like two people kneeling to pray in the middle in a pew (church bench) and two empty pews surrounding them. And, y'know, church is on Sunday. Also remembered the pronunciation because it starts with に. And they're on their knees... Yeah..
Tap into that imagination. And godspeed.

That's what I did, and I now have little difficulty identifying similar characters, but I can't say I'd recommend the method in any case as I think it probably made things harder on me in the long run.

Everyone has known a few nerds who were like that in high school. I remember a guy who was into Magic the gathering, but if anyone showed interest, he shooed them away and insulted them by saying they wouldn't be smart enough to understand the game. It's actually quite common to find people like this, and this thread reeks of people like this.

Because some faggots say it's a compulsory part of learning the language. This site has to counterbalance that, so we usually say that you should avoid it like the plague. The guide used to say that you can use it if you want to, but first try if it's really necessary.

How is it? You learn kanjis studying either way. Learn a word 無 (even if it's not so useful as a word itself) and 無い and you pretty much got the meaning of kanji plus two readings plus two words. Obviously there are many kanjis that have lots of meanings and connotations but RTK doesn't teach you all of that either, sometimes even delusive or vague meanings.

You just introduced a good mnemonic to remember the word. The difference is just how good your mnemonic is compared to his. Associative memorization technique had been known for centuries and Heisig did nothing new. Nothing prevents you from doing your own associations, learning without rtk doesn't mean rote memorization.

That's just a you problem then. There are plenty of people that can look at and memorize a word in the same amount of time or less than it takes to you to make a mnemonic.

What does this mean?
Something like "Whenever I look at her, she's cute" ? Where can I read about this use of question words?

Fuck, fell for the >read more meme, so far it's only given me headache. There's always a weirdly structured (from a gaijin's POV, of course) sentence on the very first page that I can't understand.
It sure works with English, because all European languages are basically the same shit, but studying a language so different from my L1 or English, I feel like I'm wasting my time trying to understand their way of thinking after reading nothing but TKGG, as your guide suggests.

No, you're mentally ill for ignoring reality and substituting your own fairy tales for it instead. It's completely obvious what's happening this time. It's painted on their backs. They're shilling AJATT because of Matt. It doesn't have anything to do with some random post someone made weeks ago, where they weren't doing anything AJATT related.
