I’m learning Japanese using Genki I, with LingoDeer and Memrise as side-tools. I’m confused on the correct usage of どれ.

Genki: どれが私のペンですか。

LingoDeer: 私のペンはどれですか。

Apparently they both mean “Which is my pen?”, but they use どれ differently. I’m pretty sure Genki would be correct, but could someone please explain this to me.

ありがとうございます。

I've been studying Japanese for about 2 years now and thought of taking the JLPT. Finished Genki 1 and 2 and the remaining N5 grammar (making my way through N4 grammar right now). From what I've been testing myself, I can definitely pass N5 without a doubt.

Not sure about N4 though. I have most, if not all kanji down and, as mentioned previously, am halfway done with the grammar. Not entirely confident in my listening skills though. I realise it's very early to talk about the JLPT and until December I should be able to master the remaining grammar, but I'm not sure if I should risk it (my teacher advised me not to). What do you guys think? Also, where can I find a detailed list with the kanji and vocab that N4 has compared to N5?

Thanks in advance.

You don't do it on your paperwhite, you do it on the amazon website.

Your paperwhite, however, needs to be attached to an amazon.co.jp account, not an amazon.com account. On Android I had to set my Android system language to Japanese before it would allow me to log in to amazon.co.jp, instead of amazon.com, in the Kindle app. I have no idea what the process is for a paperwhite.

as a bonus, skip anything that's too hard for you to understand, because struggling to force yourself to understand it will just make it harder to understand everything that comes afterwards. one of the most important things when you're starting out is to keep stress low. of course, when you're used to reading, you shouldn't skip anything.

It sucks compared to Yomichan since it can't into conjugations and obviously can't always accurately read things (actually, there are quite a few kanji which it can't read at all - probably not a problem you'll encounter with manga, but it's very noticeable in LNs), but it's better than nothing.

Look up the word in a dictionary, but its not so easy here. Since there is no space between words I don't know what is okurigana, or a word in all hiragana (esp if these two are back to back) and then a lot is also slang or voiced speech slurs or sounds

>If you don't know a single word in the sentence don't bother though, just skim through reading material until you find sentences that you mostly understand then use a dictionary to fill in the blanks (just like you're fluent!)
m-maybe I will try that then. Right now a lot of sentences are words I don't know. If it was just 1 word I don't know and can look up that would be a lot easier than trying to look up 5 or more words in a sentence where I don't know how to distinguish what hiragana are parts of what word...

Rather than just thinking of the reading for the word on your card, attempt to say the word aloud before flipping the card.

Best to have audio (from a native) on your cards if possible so you can copy the intonation from the clip. You don't want to teach yourself to stress the incorrect parts of words when you speak or you will end up sounding weird.

A decent rule of thumb is that stative verbs tend to translate as "had V." ex: 送信している and 眠っている are verbs that describe state changes, so in English they are most naturally translated as "~ (is/has been) sent" and "~ is asleep," respectively.

I actually managed to make it to the end, but around the same time my retention just went to shit all of a sudden (20% drop from ~80% to ~60%) and my brain started dumping everything. It was seriously depressing.

I was actually thinking of doing some kanji study again lately. I've come quite far since last time, I think, and now that I know quite a bit of vocab from reading to actually anchor the kanji to, I think I might actually be able to do it properly this time. If I do do it though, I'm not following the same method I did before. I was thinking of trying it the native way where they just learn to write words that they already know and infer the meanings of the kanji based on the words that they appear in. That's assuming I feel masochistic enough to put myself through all that again though.

I had forgotten just how fucking horrible what I did turned out to be. And it seems like my retention decline was actually even worse than I remembered; apparently I was at 95-98% retention before the decline hit, and fell from there down to ~65%, with a mature retention of around 50%. FUCK.

Also, it seems like the idea to do what I've been thinking of doing lately has actually been in my head for a long time already... I seriously though it was a new idea.
>I think that, if you're going to do rote, you've got to do it like a native. That is, when a native learns kanji, they are simply learning to write words which they already know. So instead of learning 水 as "water", for instance, you should instead first learn the word "みず" and then go from there and learn that 水 is how you write "みず".

>>18699122
>It's 10 minute of writing Kanji a day but it has honestly just become a pain in the ass to do especially as I don't need to be writing.
I was spending so long writing (easily over an hour a day, all in one sitting) that I was actually getting physical pains and eye problems. I would get bad aches in the shoulder/arm I used to write with, and I was getting these involuntary spasms with my eyes as well where they would occasionally flicker all over the place for a few seconds when I was trying to focus on something (happened multiple times per writing session and also started happening outside of my writing sessions as well). Since I stopped studying kanji, my eyes have gone back to normal and I no longer get the shoulder/arm aches either.

I do that and it works well enough. Specifically, for every word I have two cards in two different decks, J->E and E->J, and the latter I write from memory while reviewing. A word first appears as a new card in the J->E, and in a week and a half, in E->J, and with this delay you have a good idea what the word means when you start writing it. If you just start writing your most well known words in the vocab deck, it's even easier.

The two downsides are, first, time (writing E->J takes approximately twice as much time as learning J->E for the same amount of words). And second, you have to be careful to make every translation easily recognizable, lest you'd confuse words when writing them, and that's very frustrating. If you use an existing vocab deck for writing, you'd need to spend a fair amount of effort remaking translations and relearning cards along with learning them.

>> No.18699439

>>18699423
Speaking of the meanings of kanji, though, I find it helpful to have a special field in the cards, where for words with 2+ kanji, I put the approximate meanings of kanji composing the word. This field only appears on the answer side of the cards, but this way you are inferring the meanings of the kanji way more effectively, regardless of whether you write or do any E->J decks.

>Especially, but not necessarily, if it's untranslated.
I don't see how people who have dipped their toes into the language and culture can stand translations at all. I don't see the "especially." As far as I'm concerned translations are out of the picture for media where the English ends up replacing all of the original (anything that's text-only). For text, whether you were to read a translation or literally nothing, you'd still be taking in 0% of the original work, so why would you care about translations as you read the original?

J->E translation asks a bit too much, since it involves the dilemma of translating culture-specific material (making it awkward or opaque) or localizing it (i.e. clipping it entirely for something makeshift in English), and on top of that the people who actually end up doing this adapting are often full of shit. It's why I started learning Japanese in the first place. The most that this kind of translation can be thanked for is providing a base level of accessibility to the original media in the target language, so people like me could find out that it exists with no initial knowledge and be spurred on to learn how to understand it.

I'm sure there are cases where book translations/localizations end up "good" but I wouldn't go treating them like they can stand in for the original work. They're not supposed to be interchangeable, they're supposed to be a separate adaptation.
The thought process behind it is "hey, this Japanese book is good enough for me to try and make an English book out of," kind of like "this manga is good enough for me to try and make an anime out of."

You really don't need to do both. Kanji and words are so tightly entwined it would be like going over the same material but in a differently shuffled order. You should still keep exposing yourself to the language no matter which route you take though, and it's good to have examples of words for kanji when you learn them in RTK, since having some idea of what words a kanji is used in will help you learn it better.

Imo you shouldn't bother going through all of core. It's a very brute force way of teaching yourself kanji, it has a baffling selection of words and it doesn't actually teach you these words in any meaningful sense.

Doing word lookups really isn't so painful you should try and memorize the dictionary before you even start to read, and either way you'll have to look words up when you read and listen even if you saw them in core2k before because most of the time core2k is not enough and you need to improve your hearing ability, you need to see more possible contexts through google, you need a japanese dictionary, whatever.

Just be smart and use a study method that helps get you to read and listen. And most importantly, actually practice reading and listening. It's the only way to get the language to stick in your brain intuitively.

At my stage I've condensed all my "study" to just reading and listening because at this point, practicing reading and listening is the only way I'm going to get better at reading and listening.

You should do it then. Pay attention to radicals & kanji parts and practice writing them properly, that way you'll be familiarized at least.
Don't do production flashcards though since those E->J connections will never be used. All the mnemonics and stuff you learn for kanji are just placeholders for direct connections that will be made when you actually need to read or write something.

Your brain will naturally establish connections like そう being the reading for a certain phonetic component in 躁鬱 and 操縦 and 海藻 just by seeing it in all those words, connections like the right side of 額 meaning the character has something to do with "head" or the left side of 賂 having something to do with "money" by seeing a lot of "head" and "money" related words with those radicals, and connections like the meaning of かいそう being "seaweed" in contexts that involve sea plants and the ocean and etc. just by hearing かいそう being used in those contexts and having an idea of the onyomi of 海 and 藻 and being aware of the existence of those symbols.

All that info becomes one big net of "intuition" in your head and all the RTK mnemonics drop out.

You learn to write Japanese by forming connections like this, but adapted for writing instead, by calling up Japanese that you want to write in your head and writing it, which basically requires you already know Japanese. You can't hope to get to a good level of skill in writing when your brain can't call up enough things to write and can't establish enough connections because of that.

When it actually becomes useful for you to write, you can approach it like this: think something in Japanese, then write it down, looking up anything you can't remember how to write. Do that a lot and you'll be a writer. Same idea as learning how to read.

Like in his article on ~ように, he wrote a whole fucking essay that goes all the way up to including the info tidbit that ぬ and ん and へん can be used to negate verbs. I wouldn't call that detail so much as unnecessary information that belongs somewhere else.

Go ahead and check it out for the topics you're interested in, there's some value in reading them if you can quickly grasp what he's saying, but chances are if you can do that then you probably didn't need to read them to begin with. >According to the police, the fallen climbers were 5 men and 2 women from the hyogo prefecture and metropolitan kyoto. 3 died and 4 were injured.

Not too sure about these next parts:

>7人は24日にほかの山に泊まったあと、25日に阿弥陀岳に登って帰る予定でした。

Is it saying the 7 climbers had stopped at another mountain on the 24th and planned the climb and return from namidatake on the 25th?

>7人は阿弥陀岳の高さ2600mにある岩が多い急な場所を登っていたときに滑って、300mぐらい落ちたようだと警察は言っています。

Guess here the gist is that police said the 7 climbers reached a height of 2600m before falling down about 300. But I'm a bit confused by ある岩が多い急な場所. Does it mean they fell whilst climbing a steep cliff?

>けがをした人は病院の医師に「ロープで7人の体をつないで登っていました。いちばん前の人が滑って、みんな落ちました」と話していました。

So someone said "the 7 climbers were connected by rope so when the one in front slipped everone else fell as well", but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be what the injured that told the doctor or if it's what the doctor at the hospital where the injured are told the journalist, guessing it's the later?

Actually, I was thinking of just having the Japanese word on the front in kana (maybe with an example sentence to allow distinction of homophones), then my job would be simply to write that word in kanji. I was only going to do it with words that I already knew well so there'd be no reason to have English anywhere on the cards.
