It could've been a relatively risky blood transfusion (like the way Rider does things, according to some anons), or any number of non-sexual things that would've made more sense than semen being a melting pot of magical energy. Blood course through the entire body, semen goes from the testicles to the outside. I suppose all of those little sperms being half-lives might work into it, but blood is much better, and if they could pull off spinal fluid it would been more than better, it would've been genuinely cool.

Instead we get 'Hey Nasu, we need to have sex to fit the genre and get more readers, make something up.'

That's the problem, though. They only felt like they belonged because the first two lines established that 'sex=mana transfer'. If not for that, there would've been no reason for Sakura's history of hatesex, or for Shirou to help her with her mana depletion problem through sex. They could've just had sex for it's own sake, which I wouldn't have minded; Fate's second and UBW's had that as a sort of pretense, but it still had the overwhelming, mood-killing subtext of MANA MANA MANA.

It couldn't just be 'Hey, we might die tomorrow, so now that we're done with the blood transfusion/spinal tap/gem eating for mana transfer, let's have sex since we love each other'?

There are all sorts of things that happen that aren't relevant to the plot, including multiple Bad/Dead Ends which just throw something out there that's never referenced again.

Bazette is never mentioned once by name in F/SN, so I don't think it would matter.

Rin does a major character 180 for the fate and ubw sex scenes. In one, she's horny as hell, acting like a well-traveled individual with another person's body, and is literally schlicking to Shirou rutting Saber. But ubw, she's surprised as Shirou's penis, awkward, jumpy, and downright anxious.

Fuck you Nasu. You pulled this shit before with Akiha. It's not funny.

Being more emotionally involved, lacking the chance to molest the King of Knights and the male guy not being like a kid in need of Sex Guidance, plus her HAVING to be naked now and there is no urgency and arousal due to danger, lead to different enough circumstances for Rin to act differently.

Granted, the scene still sucks, but it's not 'out of the blue'.
The build-up to it was pretty sweet actually.

Ren never preyed on one human. She was nearly dying when she meet Shiki BECAUSE she never preyed on a human--that was the whole setup. The Memory Magi made her for some broken-ass purpose, promptly forgot, and she spent the rest of his life staring at fields, labs, and a windmill until he fucked around during death and showed her just a bit of kindness.

In exchanged for helping to kill the mind-eating first Einnashe, he pledge Arc to look over her, but it was more like Ren just slept alongside her. Her first active job is because Arc gave her an order on a lark, and Ren saw no reason to disobey (hence, Shiki's wet dream).

She's also pretty hax for a familiar, since she's apparently got most of her former Master's magic potential in her circuits.

The setup itself seems far too stumbling. They're on the proverbial ropes and need an ace in the hole other than what's available, so that means mana transfer. The only thing that really changed is the opponent's Gil instead of Berserker, and Archer already dropped a clue that he's someone Shirou can handle. In one life-threatening situation, she has no problem macking on Shirou and feeling up another girl. In the other situation, she's acting like a virgin through and through--it's inconsistent.

Especially when you take the Good End in mind for ubw. Why feed her the extra mana? Why not just give it to Saber directly? She allegedly swings that way and Saber already likes him and he likes her--so no big problem. Do the laughable harem end in full if you're going to do one.

Although NEVER to that degree (F/SN is mostly Shirou's story), different circumstances and situations lead to different behavious.
In the other two routes Saber shows a sillier side and has an ';easier' time of dealing with Shirou, Archer each time forms a different opinion for Shirou, Illya either does a quick reversal (like Fate) or properly warms up to him etc.

I could see the characterization leap in HF, but not so much in ubw. UBW seem more fixated on people close to him realizing how broken his personality/mental profile is over how much of a hero he is for getting so far in the war and overcoming impossible challenges. He wakes up a little and realizes he himself is broken, yeah, but he's still marching along to that merry tune of his. In comparison, Tohsaka's the one who gets more of a change, as her role goes from nurturing an idiot to being nurtured by him as every Master and their puppy pushes her shit in repeatedly.
