Where can I get some Japanese kids' books? My grasp of hiragana is getting better by the day and I'm learning to conjugate my verbs, but I want to expand my vocabulary before I start fucking around with kanji. Translating the kids' books would help solidify my grasp of hiragana, pick up a larger vocabulary of simple words, see the language in action. This is true. Direct translation has never been very good at conveying what you want it to. To go back to French again, in English, "hitting the road" is a euphemism for leaving, for departure. Translated literally ("frappe la rue"), it's just... Smacking the pavement. They have an entirely different euphemism. I was thinking more about speaking very literally, and about picking up words.

Hello, long time lurker here and got the courage to ask for your opinions!

I passed the N5 it seems. Just a bit of a background - I've been self-studying for 2 years. January last year, I attended a basic JP class for 10 sessions, and I felt nothing in the class was "new" to what I have already learned (Although it greatly helped in reinforcement, since if you're self-studying, no one will give you quick feedback).

So for the N5, I barely passed. Grammar has good score, but I barely made the Listening part.

Now I'm not sure if I should try for N4 this July or December. I feel that 1) I'm still confused with so many things, like DE and NI, 2) I am on a managerial position at work, so unlike before, I can't slack off at work. And because of work 3) I think I cannot enroll in a class this year.

I'm not sure if I should go back to study the basic patterns or continue. Honestly, writing A wa B desu sentences, going back to that atleast 3 times (first in 2016, then in 2017 during classes), is becoming very boring for me.

I apologize for the long post though but I would appreciate some advice.

What do you do about words that have the same or very similar definitions in English dictionaries? Currently, 状況, 状態, 事態, 様子, and 事情 are fucking me up, along with a couple of words like 現状 that use one of the same kanji. I also don't know if the couple of differences (like 事態 often being negative) that I do have in my cards are accurate or if I'm missing out on important details. Should I just learn all of them as "one of the 'situation' words" and be done with it, leaving the rest to exposure?

I've always been an A and B student in school, everything just came naturally. About 3 years ago I started learning g Japanese. Hiragana and Katakana were easy, only taking me a couple of hours. Then kanji came. This is where things fall apart. I can't wrap my head around kanji. I've tried nearly everything, but my brain just doesn't work with how kanji works. I always read out loud in my head, and I go fairly fast, but I just can't do that with kanji. Even if I know the meaning of the kanji, I don't know the pronunciation and that screws me all up. After 3 years I can only seem to know 200 kanji. I just can't do it.

This leads me to my next problem. Kanji has been discouraging me, and recently it's made my clinical depression a thousand times worse. I feel absolutely stupid for not understanding something that so many other people have "gotten" in far less time just worsens my depression. As a result, all of my grades have dropped significantly, and I'm constantly in a horrible mood. I study about 5 hours every day but it's just not working. The only reason I'm still going is because everyone and every Japanese guide always says "Don't give up!"

I keep going because I refuse to accept that I'm not capable of doing something, even though it's been absolutely horrible. Should I just quit before I literally kill myself out of discouragement or go against the "Don't give up" attitude everybody tells me?

For three fucking years 5 hours a day and you know 200? I call bullshit or you have a learning disability. Not trying to insult you because it's most likely the former and you're omitting the 2.5 year break you took and all the days you only studied for 5 minutes. Just keep playing VN's 'til you find one you genuinely wanna know what the bitch you like says. If you understand 20% of what she says but are worried far more with trying to understand her than you are about your failings or even the kanji (or vocab\grammar\whatever) you don't know, you will make progress. I think some of the advanced learners here might hate me for saying this but if you're getting caught up this much in the kanji I would just fucking stop looking up words for the time being and like I said just find material you genuinely want to know what they are talking about. This is my I think 3rd or 4th time taking N5. In the exam I feel like I'm gonna fail it again and been crying since, but after recollecting myself, I think I finally understand why I'm failing.

Little background of skill level: I haven't actually studied Japanese seriously until maybe a few years ago. I memorized Hiragana and Katakana many, many years ago via sheer exposure (sister was full-weeb that time so I got so I got to watch her play Japanese video games a lot), and then around 2-3 years ago I started grinding vocab via lexikeet, I think, which helped me understand radicals and learned how to write kanji correctly
And then 0-1 years back from right now I've mostly been learning Japanese via Anki, did some translation projects for some 4komas and game content, but I never did take the effort to learn these vocabulary like putting them in an Anki deck and grinding each day. Right now I talk to some Japanese acquaintances every now and then online in a community I'm in, using mostly vocab to deliver broken-but-understandable Japanese. I even got a sponsored trip to Japan last month for my translation work.

Anyway, cutting straight to the point, it seems that grammar is my weakest point, and listening also still needs some improvement. I'm pretty sure I aced vocab minus one question (I had no idea what みがいています meant at the time... but ironically I knew what the kanji 磨く means, so I would have gotten it right if the question used kanji instead of full hiragana). Heck, my gf who passed N3 a while ago didn't know the kanji for 砂糖 but I did, lol

Assuming you already read a grammar guide, personally I'd say wait a couple months before you start reading anything. Just don't wait too long and get stuck in the mindset that you are learning Japanese just by doing Anki.

I wouldn't bother with mining until you hit 2k in Core. That's just more work for more rare words that you don't necessarily need to learn right now.

Hey there! After a year and a half of self studying, last week I finally got to start some real lessons with a native japanese teacher. But then, yesterday I unfortunately had to miss my Japanese class and some time later I wrote some messages to my teacher apologizing for it and oh boy... I wrote everything in japanese and she also responded in it too (with kanji and all), it was so smooth and we talked about a some other things too.

That felt so good, I finally felt like breaking this stupid barrier. By now I can pretty much do a lot of phrases, but I still don't that much kanji though (150 more or less), but I'm starting to be able to deduce the meaning of some kanjis just by the context.

But then again, I still have some pretty basic problems that I would like to share. I don't know how to put 2 verbs in the same sentence (I do know some setted up phrases that has 2 verbs though AND when I put a word that breaks the sentences like ので, it becomes pretty use to use multiple verbs), but when I want to create my own phrases and I don't have those words in that situation, I don't know how to connect these verbs, examples:

I forgot to write that.

I would like to use it.

I need to do that now.

So... I don't have any idea on how to make this senteces in Japanese because of the verbs, how do I connect them? Thanks in advance

If you use the ITHVNR+Rikai combo and have a problem with text appearing in different threads, forcing you to constantly switch back and forth, manually copying text, etc.,
One solution is to "link" the threads. See pic related.
Green box is the command box. You can also type :h for help and see more commands.
So what you do is input :Lxxxx-yyyy where xxxx, yyyy are the thread numbers (first number in the line in the big dropdown box). Then the text from both threads will be captured together and appear when you look at thread yyyy.
The red box shows the "thread numbers." To figure them out, play the game for a bit. If text stops appearing in your viewing window, go find which thread it appeared in, then link the old thread to the new one and continue. You can also use this to hook sources of text like location names, speaker name, etc into the same window.

If I were to write out a long blog post about what is flawed about current Kanji study approaches and what I think is the most sensible way to study Kanji while giving plausible reasons and justifications for everything I am saying would it perchance land in the guide? I can write kanji but I don't think of 空 as "hole" plus "craft" or as 穴 plus 工 or anything.
I actually did do RTK back when I started, but I feel like all that artificial knowledge has gone somewhere else and been replaced by what I've learned from the "in-context" study he talks about. It seems like he had the right idea but for some reason jumped to rationalizing RTK instead of drawing the more obvious conclusion that people learn how to recall characters later, after they already know Japanese, and when they might actually benefit from being able to do so.

Plus no one confuses shit like 緑 and 縁 if they've done a good amount of in-context study. In fact in-context study is exactly what fixes that problem, RTK doesn't do shit. I did RTK and still mixed up similar kanji when reading until I'd gotten enough experience.

I've been kind of aimlessly learning Japanese on the side for a few years - my kana are both pretty solid, and I have some idea of general particle use, but I don't know that many words. I've recently started learning some Kanji and it's made a huge difference to my understanding and it's definitely helping me take strides. So I've decided to set myself a goal of being able to read a very, very simple Japanese book.

I've been looking at Yotsuba& as my first proper book that I want to be able to read, that's my goal. I know I won't be able to in say a week or even a month, especially considering my understanding.

I've been trying to learn the Japanese language (日本語) for a two years. Over the years I had an app called "Dr. Moku" and I had learned Hiragana through that and I had it basically memorized. In the past two months I finally got it together and atleast once a week I'd do a few lessons on Duolingo. Through these lessons I would write down the Hiragana - Romaji - English for anything that popped up, even if I had written 100 times. I feel fairly confident when writing Hiragana and if someone asked me how to write anything (In Hiragana) I would be able to. Though now that I am comfortable with Hiragana I would love to learn vocab and grammar. I can write it and read it but I don't know what I'm writing and reading if that makes sense. Yes of course I know basic stuff but things past, おはよう、こんにちは、おやすみ、日本人、先生, etc. So, if anyone here had any success with learning grammar/vocab learning (that isn't intensive I'm just passively learning as of right now) I would love to know all your secrets and the way that worked best for you. Back in about 2013 I started learning Japanese with my main goal being to understand anime without the subtitles with a grander aim being to one day live in Japan.

I self-studied on and off for a couple years, and by maybe mid 2015 I could form decent は and が sentences, use a lot of verbs, write full kana and new about 30 kanji. Unfortunately, after that I just kinda... stopped completely. Losing interest in anime was one of the big reasons for this, as I now had pretty much no interesting way to test my Japanese skills. I know no one else who is studying the language and I really wasn't the best conversation partner when using HelloTalk.

It's now that I've decided I really want to get back into studying Japanese again. My main motivation now is just to give me something productive to do rather than sit here and play video games all day. I'm just not entirely sure how I want to restart my studies.

Right now I feel I can recall: * All the hiragana. * Some katakana. * Maybe only 10 or so kanji. * Very basic vocab.

I was considering either:

a. Skimming through the stuff in the books that I've already covered to refresh myself.

b. Start completely anew and go through everything from the books thoroughly.

What do you guys think?

So, I've been learning Japanese (Nihongo) for 3 years now... 1 year self study and 2 years in uni. And i feel like the kanjis are just not sticking with me. What should I try to memorize them for more then a week? I now about 100-120 kanjis already and can read basic material in romanji and a little bit in hiragana.

My current learning method:

I just received my JLPT N4 results, failed by 2 points. I am not so upset about the test specifically, but it has confirmed some things I have been thinking for a while.

I am 24 and living in Chicago, my dream has been to move to Japan since I was a about 11 years old. About 6 years ago I started seriously learning Japanese, took my first college class, even though I had already learned Hiragana and Katakana from a young age. I sailed through 2 years in college without doing much HW because it was all just so easy. I have a great memory for nouns. After getting out of school I realized that I had to start to learn how to study so I decided to start to study for the JLPT because it would be a goal every year that I could see my progress. I failed my first year N5, by 30 some points. I thought I was ready but I relied too much on class information and just didn't study enough. then I kinda got in a rut and although I studied some, I really didn't commit to Japanese for a while. I probably tried to do at least 15 minutes a day but I wasn't really working hard at it at all.

Flash forward a couple years and I had started to study again, passed the N5 and was feeling good about life. 2011 was me hitting my stride. I had finally learned how to study. I did Rosetta Stone, got the Japanese TV channel and watched as much as I could, downloaded dramas, got through the entire Basic Japanese Grammar book, tried to read children's books, got a lang-8 account and started writing journals at least once a week, started Anki, read Common Japanese Collocations, got the Tobira book and started it, picked up some manga, got a Japanese exchange student, started speaking only Japanese with my husband in public. I was pretty much AJATT. I am not going to say I did great at all these things, but I definitely tried. I think I tried everything because a lot of things didn't work too well for me. So I wasn't the best student, but I was doing Japanese at LEAST an hour a day.

So October 2011 rolls around and I decide I need to start studying for the JLPT N4. I did nothing but study for the JLPT so long, my brain actually hurt every day. I did practice tests, worked on grammar, bought a couple of listening books and studied specifically for that test for 2 straight months.

I just received my results, I failed. I only failed by 2 points, but it made me realize that I actually guessed on almost every question on the test. I could not understand the listening at all!

So here I am, I have put 6 years or more of my life into this language, I have worked my ass off, I even have definite plans to move to Japan April 2013 to join a language school with my husband for a year. We already have 1/3 of the money saved up. And I feel like maybe I am just too stupid to learn this language. I have tried so hard and I just keep failing. We just made friends with a Japanese couple and I can't understand anything they say, I am defaulting to my husband just to be able to converse with them. Plus its super hard to watch him pick up the language with ease and pass all the tests with flying colors.

So I guess I need some help. I am ready to just give up the language completely, but I have no idea what that will do to my life and my relationships (I have already told my whole family I am moving to Japan) Should I just give up? Is there anyway I could pull myself back up and continue with it when I have failed so may times before? I have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this language!! I am sorry for the long post but I really need some help! (Please don't respond with a がんばれ！or "you can do it!" that's really not what I need right now...

Basically, I started Japanese 4 years ago, I learnt Hiragana and Katakana, then got into some grammar and vocabulary before giving up. This is a problem, I would go on to continuously have up to today, I spend a day learning all these words, then just forget it by the end. So I put Japanese down, then pick it up two months later. And repeat.

Before anyone answers, I should make a few things clear. I have Anki, its awesome but I find that I don't really learn all the words... I will learn a few and then simply start guessing and the process of elimination will get me through the cards. Worth mentioning, I've been using Anki seriously for only a few months.

I've been using various websites like Tae Kim for grammar, but again, it just throws these words at me, I write them down, and then just forget them minutes later.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I figured it might be worth mentioning. I live with my serious long term girlfriend of over 2 years, and she has been learning Japanese for almost 10 years and is at a very advanced level (though she will never admit it). She suggested I use a website called Lang-8, which is basically a website where you write about anything, and have it corrected by natives. I've been using this site myself but again, I'm at such a pathetic level, I can't put the sentences together without looking at my hand written notes, so again, it just feels as though I'm not learning anything.

Any tips for how to remember everything would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I have taken Japanese lessons for around a year and a half. I am familiar with Hiragana and Katakana although I do have to think about it for a moment with some of them.

We have covered basically all of the Japanese For Busy People book 1, although we don't always use it. So I understand -te form and it's uses and the use of adjectives.

I was thinking that Genki text book and workbook might be the best way to further improve with some self study along with the Kanji Look and Learn book. I feel like a need to learn Kanji and build up my vocabulary since I still find I am unable to read Japanese.

Is there anything else I can do? Or any other recommendations, I feel a bit overwhelmed with it all and I'm a bit unsure how to go about it at the moment.

Hey guys, I've been learning Japanese for the last two years on the University, but I didn't have much time to really focus on this language for the last year. I have no problems with recognizing hiragana and katakana, but If I have to read whole sentences or longer texts it takes me too much time. What would be the best method to make this reading faster? Do You think that reading long kana texts without actually checking the meaning of every sentence or vocabulary would help, or is it a waste of time?

Hello, everyone. I can't seem to find any resources that work with my current level of knowledge. I honestly don't know too much, but I'm not an absolute beginner, either. I've been able to fluently read Hiragana and Katakana for a year now, and I've picked up some kanji. I've started Anki, but it seems like whenever I try to read a simple children's story I'm completely lost. The vocabulary I'm learning in Anki is useful but it seems like childrens stories use simpler words than what I'm studying. I've searched for a good resource for months, but can't seem to find much of anything that actually explains text to me rather than just giving translations. I think what I'm struggling with is grammar. I've been looking at Tae Kim's stuff recently, and that's helped a lot.
