Hi, retard here. What do I actually do with suspended leach cards in my Anki deck? I'm assuming I should add them to another deck and study them separately but I am a retard after all so I want to be sure.

It's a dumb feature, ignoring the cards that you have the most problem with.
Occasionally when you have extra time, you can do a cram session where you only review leech tagged cards.

Learning onyomi is pointless since often there's multiple of them, and you can learn it part of vocabulary.
The point of attaching some arbitrary meaning to radicals is to help you identify them. So that when you look at the kanji and see that it's made of two radicals, you can actually identify name those radicals.

I've been pretty good at identifying new vs old cards so far (a little over 1000 in). If I had to guess I would say less than 5% of the time I see a card assuming its new, it turns out to be an old one. Even if I can't recall an old card, I have almost never mistaken it for a new one.

The problem I'm having is more that it doesn't really give me an honest chance to focus on learning the new cards. When I had it on mixed before and it just threw 20 assorted new cards into the ~100 or so I was reviewing randomly it really made it hard to retain those new cards. So what ended up happening is after a week or so of new cards, I ended up with upwards of 50 cards I was constantly getting wrong and not committing to memory; I basically had to do multiple review sessions of missed cards and just grind them out one day for a good hour or two until I was confident in them to "catch up" to where I should be.

Ever since I started turning new cards to 0 and then doing my review (and then turning new cards back to 20 and learning them after the review), I've found it a lot easier to actually learn the new words and their meanings. Because I am seeing them all in a clump and writing them down as I see each new one, it becomes much clearer in that shorter span what makes each of them different and its a much nicer learning transition. From a statistical standpoint my true retention has gone from ~55-70% each day to 77-82%

People say that about a lot of things, and they're usually wrong. Sure, you can find some stuff that Actually Is objectively hard for beginners and low-intermediates in a meaningful sense, but when someone says something is "bad for beginners", they're typically wrong.

Reading is always going to have a certain level of difficulty when you start out, unless you start with something absurdly simple like a graded reader or isolated graded sentences. A lot of people just say that whatever they started out with was hard, even if it's not harder than anything else they could have picked. People say that the slang makes Yotsuba hard, which, while it reflects reality in some sense, isn't meaningful, because the amount the slang contributes to the difficulty pales in comparison to the fact that beginners just don't know Japanese at all.

One of the easiest things for me to read was a manga about an isolated subtropical island. Almost everyone speaks with an accent so thick you'd think it's completely made up, and they use lots of western words written in hiragana (this is justified in-universe), but it become completely comprehensible to me after a volume and a half or so.

No matter what you start with, it will always have steep learning curve at the very beginning. This is true no matter what you do. If you study vocabulary you'll be confused about grammar, if you study grammar you'll be confused about word use, and if you study both you'll be confused about pragmatics and conversation flow.

The most important thing is to find something reasonable (again, some things ARE too hard to start with, like Muramasa, Hello Lady, or a lot of manga without furigana if they're text dense). And then power through it until you get to the point where narrow conversations, like the one in the image in >>18551921, don't trigger feelings of alienness or impenetrability. It'll happen a lot sooner than you think (you, the lurker reading this), and your Japanese will start accelerating off the rails until you enter Intermediate Hell. Good luck out there.

I'm not as far as you in RTK, but I've found that the more bridges you build between content, the easier it will be to remember it. If you know the word 先生, then you know 先 can be read as せん, and 生 can be read as せい. I think this can help trigger a kanji recall in some people to remember the visuals. Though, I don't think learning one isolated kunyomi reading is the best course of action. I've picked up a few words casually by paying attention to readings/vocab in my reviews and playing around with them briefly（臭い、相談、etc. ）. I think this method might be the best.

Honestly, with this in mind, KKLC probably has the better setup. I've been considering switching over, but I'm at over 300 words, and I'm hesitant to do so now that I've invested all this time into RTK. Well it was about the time I finished it, I'm sure you can find it in the archives. Nothing special about it. I had done Kanji study (not RTK) before and sat down to learn a lot of words. Worked quite well but many reviews in the short time after that was a bit frustrating.
