What's the main difference in between western and Japanese otaku relationships?

Japanese fandom cherishes their social context within fandom and dates happily while the western counterpart marginalises any and all relationships.

That picture says "Hong Kong otaku", I think you meant eastern otaku

Otakuism is more accepted in the east, and yes, unfortunately (fortunately for some here, i'm sure) asian women come closer to the 2D ideal than western women

It's not that it cherishes it, it's just that it isn't as socially acceptable to have such nerdy interests over there. You're out of your mind if you think everyone hooks up with cute fujoshi over there.

It's part of the Japanese psyche to not advertise their interests either if they deviate from the norm. Confucian harmony and all that.

I'd think that the biggest difference is that the elitist hardcore type proves how hardcore he is in Japan by spending asinine amounts of money on his hobby, but the elitist hardcore type in the US proves how hardcore he is by spending as little money as possible.

So all this concealment of powerlevel stuff was Confucianism? Well, it's actually mostly an agreeable philosophy, interests are rarely worth "advertising" anyway. Though I don't think it's as dangerous to like uncommon stuff as it is to let your interests be a defining point of your personality, as many people do when their advertise their interests. I believe there are some people who are guilty of the latter, but think they are being accused of the former and doesn't care to change.

There's a clear correlation between having nerdy interest and being antisocial, with the main factor being that nerdy interests places you on the outskirts of society because of their deviance from popular culture.

In other words, if you like sports, you can talk to pretty much anyone on the street about it, thus making socializing easy and natural, but if you like animu, the few people you can talk to it about are douchebag, making isolation seem like the most tempting solution.

mmm well it depends in the context I guess, here in chile and the rest of latin america being a otaku it's pretty accepted by everyone, and we dont have those stereotypes like otaku=nerd, sports=popular, there is people that thinks like that but it's a minority, and we don't feel bad or hate everyone just because of them, mostly because we have a large social group, I think it's the same in europe

Well, it's probably not that bad in any part of the world. Perhaps in high school, which would result in people being insecure about their hobbies for the rest of their lives. But the effects of mainstream media coverage are still great, so sport is among the more popular things to talk about wherever there are TVs.

>> No.1854973

> if you like sports, you can talk to pretty much anyone on the street about it, thus making socializing easy and natural

I didn't say you can't like sports and be antisocial, but there's really no excuse to be antisocial when you're into sports.

>> No.1855014

>>1854999

Why are you looking for excuses? You should be antisocial if you're antisocial. If you're not, then don't be. I have a casual interest in sports, that doesn't mean I should go outside and start talking to people. Otherwise it means you should go out and start schmoozing with the niggers that love Bleach and shit. After all, their low powerlevel only means they can't reach your heights. It doesn't mean you can't stoop down to their level. There are tons of highly social low level weeaboos. But just because you can do something doesn't mean you want to or should.

Well, chilean is different as colombian but both latin american countries, still.

Anyhow, as for my experience of colombian person, it appears that not being too social and outgoing is far more alienating quality than some hobby. Primarily intellectually oriented people seem to get marginalised easily, not that it has anything to do with being an anime or manga hobbyist.

As for religion, I used to tell him stuff like "pope should be murdered" or "I'll have an abortion just to commit sin" and I did not pick up any particular sense of being offended. I don't think religion itself is such an issue but its effect on overall things.

Top right: The otaku of Hong Kong
Top left: They all have short spiky hair styles. No one dyes their hair.
Below that: Thin glasses with thick frames, the so-called "Ultra Eyes"
Below that: The biggest difference with Japan: everyone's slim!
Right of that: The girls they bring along are all sort of iffy. A lot of the guys look cool, so how about you girls start thinking about hairdos, makeup, etc.?
Below that: Fashion that makes even Hong Kong people think, "What is that?"
Left of that: Huge bags are certainly common around the world
Below that: Silver chain
Below that: The rate of female companionship is high. Which means you can bring a woman when going to buy toys!!(my heart cries out)
Right of that: Huge bags are certainly common around the world
Below: Sneakers
