I'd think that the biggest difference is that the elitist hardcore type proves how hardcore he is in Japan by spending asinine amounts of money on his hobby, but the elitist hardcore type in the US proves how hardcore he is by spending as little money as possible.

So all this concealment of powerlevel stuff was Confucianism? Well, it's actually mostly an agreeable philosophy, interests are rarely worth "advertising" anyway. Though I don't think it's as dangerous to like uncommon stuff as it is to let your interests be a defining point of your personality, as many people do when their advertise their interests. I believe there are some people who are guilty of the latter, but think they are being accused of the former and doesn't care to change.

Why are you looking for excuses? You should be antisocial if you're antisocial. If you're not, then don't be. I have a casual interest in sports, that doesn't mean I should go outside and start talking to people. Otherwise it means you should go out and start schmoozing with the niggers that love Bleach and shit. After all, their low powerlevel only means they can't reach your heights. Anyhow, as for my experience of colombian person, it appears that not being too social and outgoing is far more alienating quality than some hobby. Primarily intellectually oriented people seem to get marginalised easily, not that it has anything to do with being an anime or manga hobbyist.

As for religion, I used to tell him stuff like "pope should be murdered" or "I'll have an abortion just to commit sin" and I did not pick up any particular sense of being offended. I don't think religion itself is such an issue but its effect on overall things.
