It's more straightforward than that. Anything that could pose a threat or safety hazard is prioritized over new projects. Meanwhile new projects have to meet stricter compliance regs from the get-go to head off any messy disasters.

So it take several weeks for a culvert to be installed according to autist-level standards, but if an earthquake or washout destroys it then all those nitpicky rules go out the window to get things back up and running asap

From what i remember there was no economic incentive to keep it up, and both the camera and its web interface (silverlight?) was becoming outdated and would have to be replaced.

Honestly today the same function could be had from a cheapo IP camera and youtube livestream, but "new" technology and Japan seems to be largely incompatible despite it's reputation as a high-tech country.

A new law is meant to come into force in April that requires age verification for any website that contains "inappropriate" content. It's reported as a regulation for porn ("somebody think of the children!"), but in reality it allows the government to block any site they deem "inappropriate". The government is already talking about extending this law.

But good news for >>18651761, it has been delayed until the end of the year.
http://www.wired.co.uk/article/porn-block-ban-in-the-uk-age-verifcation-law

>>18653514
No, the plans were to have the websites regulate it. You actually had to give your personal details and/or credit card information over to the website in order to access it. In other words, you are personally linked to any post you make or video you view. This would mean the government can arrest you any time they want if you view a website that contains "hate" speech (such as 4chan), or a porn site that violates Britain's already harsh content regulations (it is technically against the law to view hardcore porn or "harmful" fetishes such as BDSM). But now, who knows what is meant to happen. It's all a huge mess.

There used to be another one similar to the last one but it died a few months ago. There are other non-railway cameras with sound, but most of them either have music or are in a silent room which kind of defeats the point of having sound.

I'm finding quite a few sakura events, google now has chert blossom locations on their map of Japan, Ueda has a few extra cameras up so you can view the blossoms online.

Most of the time you can find some comfy IP cams, the panasonicHD and Canon ones are pretty nice.
Unfortunately no audio on most of them but with basic Google-fu you should be able to find rtmp or mjpg streams for whatever model it is to load in your mediaplayer of choice, but don't expect 30fps full HD.

Not only that, there is (at least there was a week or so ago) some weird fuckery going on with threads that don't show up in the catalog but are still active.

Not sure if this is some sort of janitor stealth purge without actually removing the threads but it fucks up thread count.

I have been watching random webcams off and on since 2004 and i have to say no other nation can even compete in comfyness.

I used to watch a camera in some mountain village outside Shizuoka back in 2012
It had a stunning view out over a valley below with tea farms on terraces on the mountain sides, cherry trees along the main road and a bench just below the camera that the old people used to come sit on for hours chatting with each other.

I really wish i could find that one again if it is still up, but it has been so long now i doubt its still online (at least not accessible) or i would have found it by now.

I wouldn't say this line is really the prime example of modern Japanese rail. Afaik it's a private line that is heavily tourist/sightseer oriented. The noticeable delays are also likely to be the result of the higher tourism volume during the spring season. I think i have seen it before but i cant remember if it is a dome camera or one of those classic CCTV style outdoor camera housings.

Thing is people don't notice them anyway, people rarely look up.
Unless they are the super obvious ones that are installed more to deter crime then anything else where they are installed so that they draw attention to them.
And if it is a dome camera on a streetlight or a power pole no one ever seem to notice them unless they are looking right at it.

If you want to see the page to expand contribute with:
1. The picture you want to represent the stream you are proposing
2. Link to the site
3. Possible a direct link to the stream to open through players.

I will later add explanations to how to watch streams through mpv and mpc-hc. Constructing a proper recording guide might also be nice, especially time-lapses, but since I don't deal with that someone else will have to do it.

I checked out some templates, but decided there was no point to them. And would have really made me to write the code around them, which might have been good practice, but then again I am not trying to become an html pro from this experience. Simple is enough, and best perhaps for our simple image board needs.
I learned yesterday how to do a few other things. I think of making the front page into a "Table of content" with the key points like the list, howto and others. Each will redirect to its own sub page, so there will be some order to things, it won't be just one long page. It will take me like 30-60 minutes tops probably to add the content I want, but I am being lazy for now.

Thanks for the new camera recommendations! They have been added!
Also I have fixed the "hover over image, show name of the camera/place" thing, which I thought it worked for some reason even though it never did. Not super relevant, but it is a thing. By the way you can right-click -> view the images and they all open in 720p or so (though some streams can run at 1080p or even higher). I wonder if I should actually make them only thumbnail size so the page can load faster for slower internets or leave it like that.

Meanwhile I have a sort of a question. I would expect the camera list to eventually increase even more, so would at some point be appropriate to divide it into different sub-sections (maybe "train cameras", "land/townscape cameras" and "street cameras")? Or should it all remain one big page anyway?

Uncle Remus is only good for a few years. It's essentially welfare for white people and after the government cuts the last few programs for minorities they'll start going after whites. There's already new "means-testing" reforms in my country that only exist to make it difficult for uneducated people to claim job seekers benefits. Long term disability isn't far off.

I only prefer being a NEET because of my social anxiety and nervousness around other people. I'd much rather have lots of money so I could travel to Japan and see these trains in person rather than through a grainy web cam feed straight out of the Realplayer era.

I want the full experience. I want to wait for an hour at a deserted station that's just a raised platform made out of wood while the cicada chirp around me. I want to experience again accidental chianti on a crowded train where I get pressed up against the soft bosom of a homely schoolgirl. I want to meet a cute girl at a station I found on the Internet, have compensated dating and then whip out just enough 10,000 yen bills that she'll agree to go to a love hotel to let me take her virginity, but not so much money that she won't regret doing it later on in life.
