The first anime barely had any lore beside "mysterious enemy force attacks!", characters were literally just repeating lines from the game with no good reason in some scene and none of the characters had any development. Game isn't any better in that regard.
The movie expanded on the origin of the abyss forces but still in a pretty fucking lukewarm way by focusing on shitty OCs instead of developing the bosses from the game in any sort of way, much less making the shitty plot work well with the historical naval battles recreated in it because it was too busy telling the story of the garbage mc. No one in KC has a unique motivation besides "defeat the enemy force", almost every shipgirl has nothing interesting to say or think about their fight against the abyss forces or anything substantial that the enemies might think about a particular shipgirl or any sense of rivalries besides this one looks kinda similar to the other. KC also fails to do anything interesting with the "we are fighting fallen versions of our comrades" besides the most cookie cutter ideas that can come up with said concept.

I never mentioned any other franchises aside from KC and Fate Go in my post so I assume you think I'm a 2hufag, I was just stating how passionless KC actually is but still even then I think 2hu makes a better job with it's assets to create a world way better than KC. Almost every boss in 2hu has it's own musical theme, it's own spellcards referencing or making allegories to Japanese folklore in different ways, it's own introduction lines that's more than just a dozen flavors of Sink! and it's own entry in the manual of the game detailing who that character is even if it's going to be someone who won't do anything besides getting it's ass kicked in the first few levels. Every important character also has it's own unique agenda or reason for causing a ruckus, in KC it's just more abyss forces arranged to look similar to a historic naval battle but failing to bring anything new to the table aside from resembling it's source from inspiration.
Call me a 2hufag all you want, but I'll repeat, my point is just setting the record straight about how passionless and uninspired KC is.

They have vastly different reasons to do so but I already addressed this in the other post, also voices is something that comes from the size and budget of the product not passion. You can't expect a 1 man project to come with multiple voiced characters for every new game every year.

Characters in Windows-era Touhou beside Koakuma, Daiyousei, and Tokiko (which are just random literally unnamed characters made popular by the fandom) have their own background and personality. Things like Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red and other Aya and Akyuu works help a lot in these regard.
Meanwhile Kancolle has nothing but a distastefully mediocre anime and movie that instead of focusing on the world just focused on specific characters and sucking Akagi's nonexistent dick.

I've never really understood what's its appeal, to the point that /jp/ treats it pretty much at equal footing with Touhou, and especially with the hate that idolshit gets. I'm kinda curious.

I don't think it's because "2D idols are different", since stuff like Love Live seems to get kicked out of the board. And I'm not sure if it's completely the nostalgia factor, since the spin-off girls seem to be just as liked as the originals.

Sometimes I also wonder if there's some double standard going on, since both it and KanColle are corporate franchises with self-insert protagonists (Producer and Admiral respectively) and mobages/browser games (at least in the case of the Im@s spin-offs). Though I'm not too familiar with Im@s aside from who some of the girls are, so I'm probably missing the complete picture.

I used to keep my distance from Im@s because "it's just idol trash" but i gave it a try and it wasn't quite how i expected.
The producer might be the "self-insert character" but his relations with the idols, and between the idols themselves, are fairly well made, with the idols each having their own real problems, in work or life or whatever. In the anime, the producer saves Haruka, the main character, from an accident and has to stay in the hospital for some days, this makes her really depressed and unable to work.
There's basically no romance, some idols do love their producer(and i don't like that very much) but not much further than that. However they do use that to develop the character, for example in the Xbox 360 port of The IDOLM@STER, Miki was going to be run over by a car but the producer save her and is hit instead. She is moved by that and it changes her personality, she cuts her hair, stops slacking at work and, as you expect, falls in love with him. Another example is that in one of the Cinderella Girls CD dramas, the producer is aware one of his idols is yandere for him and he tries to help her with that, without her noticing, of course.
The music is also great because, well, it's about idols, it must be good.
In general, yes, it's a corporate franchise like Kancolle, but the effort(not passion, effort) from the franchise is considerable.
As for Love Live, in my opinion, i didn't like it very much. I tried the anime and couldn't like any of the characters, the development wasn't as impactant to me, and it always felt off how they're "school idols" and nothing professional, considering the magnitude of their shows. I didn't bother with the rest because of that.

Honestly I partially take it back. I was annoyed by how superficial the exchanges seemed. I felt it really lacked context and awareness of just what happens to a person after eating so much time like it's nothing. It didn't help that they were at the forefront of the entire story. That was all I meant by "autism": it was just so shallow and clearly contradictory to the story's message of respecting time and the universe otherwise, since it was like no time had passed for anyone at all.

Looking past that, it does respect time by affirming through its story how much bigger time is than any of us, and how humans must regard it if they could meet how unending it is. It's also educational, and patient with its message. I find it unsettling how unaffected every character is by time, though. It lacks so much awareness.

Ultimately, I don't like it. The characters forcefully being used as vehicles to tell a story is bad storytelling. That is only one aspect of the story where pieces were forced into place for the sake of forcing the story. This could be adapted far better by merely telling someone specific touhou characters are immortal, then teaching them of the theories told in the story. That way concepts like how vast the universe is, how persistent time is, and how everything eventually perishes aren't stepped on by deus ex machina just because some human wants to tell a story.

Sure, the story is a bit flawed on the storytelling but doing it from their own experience of the death of the earth and the universe is rather more impacting and epic. His other doujins do exactly the same you're mentioning but with drugs and while they are nice, they didn't stand out as much as immortals who say the death of the universe did.
