Anyone know how to fix the japanese version of Symphonic Rain having no text? Looks like it happens with the english version too as that's what all of the posts on the archive are about when I try to look it up.
I've tried running as admin, reinstalling to the default directory, using a different computer, and downloading the english version and using the japanese exe, but nothing worked.

I used the fact that most of the enemies will stay in the same "sector" and fight you so long as you don't leave them alone for too long. Unfortunately, that also means that you can't just dodge around and wait for an opening, so you have to take risks and get hit. They still broke all of the walls, but thankfully, the last wave of enemies didn't seem to care even a little about going back there.

On another complaint, I wish that they didn't count absolutely everything that happens after a route split as entirely new for scene-skipping purposes, even when the scene is identical to scenes from other routes. I see what they did there, and it's really lazy. They should write the scene and put branches depending on flags, not ctrl-c, ctrl-v, make the player click through a scene that he's already read out of concern that he might miss something new.

Finished Licia's arc in Aiyoku no Eustia. Holy fuck that was amazing, definitely the best part of the VN so far. I didn't expect shit to hit the fan this hard before the last arc, it was such a wild ride with tons of nice character moments. Licia was a total cutie who got some great character development, the governor was a deliciously evil villain, Gau was fun, and Lucius best bro.

It was so good I somehow feel like Tia's own arc won't be able to hold a candle to this.

What VN has your favorite art/art style? Specifically the characters, but you can do background art too if you want

From that one politician's assassination to Kou's first meeting with Chinatsu in [current year] plays out identically, and the only change in the assassination is that it's a little abridged, IIRC. If there was anything new in that space whatsoever, it was so minor that I didn't even notice.

That's basically why I'm just skimming while keeping an eye out for any significant divergences. Again, the only change that I've noticed for a while (since the opening scene, which does have a pretty different tone to it in Chinatsu's route) is that some things are a little abridged.

I wish that there wasn't such a strong correlation between "hot characters" and "bad writing". It's not just VNs, either. It's across the entire anime/manga/LN/anime game subculture.

I remember a while back I played a VN where the protagonist was a cat (just a normal cat, not a catgirl or anything) and pretty early on gets transformed into a human, and learns that in order to become a cat again he needs to get a human girl to fall in love with him before Christmas, otherwise he'll be doomed to stay a human forever. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Wanted to try playing it again since my Japanese skills are a bit better and I remember it being cute but giving up since I wasn't so good at reading back then.

Honestly it's not too bad, but I already played Utawarerumono 1 in Japanese before and they have a lot of common phrases and word usage so it was easier for me.
It's only a bit harder than average because it's on console and you can't use a text hooker.

There are a few scenes (not a lot) where they speak to/about the Emperor in very honorific language, so if you're not good at that expect some dictionary lookups. They are usually only a few sentences long.
Also some minor infodumps about food and alcohol here and there for world building.

If you aren't confident in yourself there are complete walkthrough videos on youtube in the English version, so you can look up a translation if you get stuck on a line.

No they're not. I know this because I've looked at the internals. They're all in completely different scripts. Hell, they're not even edited the same. If you look at the flashbacks vs the Reminiscence scripts, you can see how they fixed things like commas and typos in one but not the other.

For Dive 1, they definitely are. I just went through them. The other parts weren't marked as read, but all of the school scenes from the start to where Chinatsu's route really splits off (where I'm at now) were.

Maybe you misunderstand how they work.

There's a set of Rain scripts, a set of Nanoha scripts, a set of Chinatsu scripts, etc. There are forks (eg Nanoha's scripts begin at a branch in Rain's scripts), but there's not a variable that specifies the 'route' you're in, so they can't do something like call a shared flashback file. The exact same same flashback (or in general, scene) might exist in both Rain and Chinatsu's routes, as well as Reminiscence, but that's because it was copy and pasted across multiple scripts.

I actually have a good recommendation for non-moege fans who take three days to get from the very, very beginning of Baldr Sky to just the very beginning of Baldr Sky: Monmusu Quest.

I guess it doesn't help when there's still barely any context for what's that's going on. I'm getting this weird textual glitch in Cross Channel Final Complete (Windows 7). Some of the text is covered by white boxes. If you look hard enough you can actually see the real characters hidden under the boxes. The options/save menus have the same glitch.

My locale/unicode are all set to Japanese. I've played tons of other Japanese VNs and I've never seen this, so I don't know what could be causing it. Has anyone ever had this happen in a game?

And for whatever reason you have a route like that in there. It feels like it's done in case someone genuinely wanted to choose in a way to get to chapter 5 and didn't think "this is the dumbest thing ever" and just tried all the options expecting a quick bad end.
Guess it's nice that it's optional, but still. And it's good at making you even more mad at the "main heroine".

Most writers only have one or two things that are great for the entirety of their careers, even outside of eroge. Writing is hard. Prodigies like Maruto and Nisio who churn out something every other month consistently at extremely high end quality are the exception and basically inhuman.

I don't know what you want to tell me there. I know what happens in the route. I wonder why the writer bothered writing this. It should just be game over. Like I already wrote, the only way I can explain the route is that the writer assumed someone would genuinely believe nothing is wrong with reaching chapter 5 and as such gives them a mirror to show how and why they messed up. But there's already a (shorter) ending in that chapter that more or less does that as well and I seriously doubt anyone thinks that's the way to go anyway. A route with that kind of protagonist is, in my opinion, just painful. Even if it makes sense, given the choices leading to it, of course.

I start to think more and more that the "not main story" parts are however just generally lackluster. I just played the maid route, and my god. The rush was real.

I think I liked the newer card game by Astronauts better than this. It was a lot simpler, but also a lot less annoying in result. But the core idea remains the same. You build a deck to defeat the enemy in one turn. Maybe 2 turns. The beginning drags as you have to play the game as it's intended. Which is slow and fucking boring. Once you get actual elements to abuse weaknesses and soon after your first OP tier 4 guardian card, you can start tackling lvl 50 optionals. This is also where it becomes, once again, very powerful to not actually have a normal spellcard deck, but only as much as you draw in turn 1. Normal card games obviously don't allow that. This game does. You remove any RNG like that.
Challenge is somewhere else, but I kinda found the cheese entertaining in its own way. The game has a good amount of lvl50 optionals and the first ones during the plot appear when the normal enemies are around lvl25. So without cheese, you won't beat that, as you get destroyed if you'd normally fight those. Can't return to beaten dungeons either, outside of ng+ I guess. You'll also save a lot of time in a lot of battles, as you don't need to fight "normally", meaning destroying most guardian cards. I feel like this cheese is somewhat intended to be there as well, as some later encounters feel like they are made for that. (Super tanky enemies and massive damage reduction where killing them is really not the answer) Unfortunately, a direct result is that a LOT of cards suck. Defensive stuff, or rather anything that's not offensive, is completely pointless for you. But it has its meaning for the enemy.


The story is kinda thin, as expected. Gotta be the best one, take revenge for daddy and defeat some ancient sealed goddess or whatever. (that obviously has a random ero scene afterwards) I liked Tooru. She was included a little weirdly, but whatsoever. Pretty good voice acting here as well. Most of the other character weren't very interesting, but you don't have to bother much with them anyway. Character events are fairly separate from main events.
Didn't really like the MC here though. Way too penis guided. And, mind you, I like Rance. This was however little.. I don't know. In Rance I feel like the girls still get some respect and Rance has to work to unzip his hyper weapon. I was missing that in this game. Sure you tend to have to win as well, but it felt pretty lifeless.

The main reason I like Rance is the story. The world, history, characters, everything has quite a lot of thought put into it. The games could have zero H scenes and I wouldn't really care.
The gameplay really depends on the game, some are a lot more fun to play than others. It'd be nice if instead of just creating a completely different system every time, they expanded on and improved on what people like.
Rance himself is kind of hit and miss. In the older games he was far more of a scumbag than he is now. In the more recent games he has rather mellowed out somewhat. I can see why people don't like him though.
Honestly, there aren't really any other games like Rance being made. So if you like this kind of game, then it's the game for you. I also have to give Alicesoft props for continually updating the series with new installments over 30 years, instead of some other companies that just make a couple games, then milk it for a decade+ of spinoffs and remakes.

Seems like all the reviews of Rance 10 are criticizing the same thing. Scenario is great and first playthrough is fun but subsequent playthroughs get repetitive since you lose everything, have to start from the beginning and redo all the battles. Sounds kind of lame honestly. I guess it will be the kind of game you use a walkthrough for after the first clear to get the true end with as little difficulty as possible.

I played a lot of Rance X, and I can say only one thing: give it a couple more months to Alicesoft fix their shit. You are absolutely right. I haven't noticed this. Still, it's not quite the same as if it was in the same window as the text, not to mention I won't necessarily know when to switch to the next file.

I retried with PlayOnMac but it still doesn't start. I thought there might've been some issues like maybe winetricks putting things into the wrong place or something, but everything seems fine. I've tried multiple wine versions but it's always the same result. I even installed mono, but it doesn't seem to change a thing.

You can do ITHVNR+nextOSD or chiiTrans to grab the text and overlay it over the media player and then based on the text to switch over to the next animation. This is on the VM though.

I tried it before on Wine. I was successful in launching but the animations always made it crash. I don't know if I ever made the animations work in game. Prob would involve ffdshow, lavfilters and wmp9/10 tho.

From looking at the AB guide, you probably need to install more directx9 dlls so just add all of them in addition whatever is listed there. Add devenum, dsound, directplay and vcrun2015 to be safe.

Booting up every time I want to play a game is a pain. With that said, I've tried that before. I installed windows 7 with bootcamp, but for some reason it didn't let me set the size of the partition, so I ended up with barely any usable space after booting up. In the end I deleted the partition.
