He is adamant that comprehensible input is the sole way to acquire language. Not production, so not writing, speaking, and not getting your errors corrected.
Correct production, in his view, is the result of successful comprehensible input.
Personally, hes taking a fat dump on the teaching methods and drawing a giant target on his back from any form of faculty involved with selling language classes.

Production is not useless though. You can learn to say words better and stumble less and type faster. (´・ω・`)

I think the best way to verify that the input hypothesis is correct is to think about it in reverse.

If the input hypothesis were incorrect and you could learn a language by production that would be tantamount to reinventing an already existing language with a perfect match. This is obviously incorrect because we know languages are highly idiosyncratic, or in other words, there are an infinite number of syntactically correct Japanese sentences but only a subset of those are semantically meaningful and an even smaller subset sound natural. Without first knowing the language you cannot distinguish between the syntactically correct and the semantically correct.

some "mistakes" sound native, some don't, don't question natives. and by the way, the rules of language are determined by natives, not by a linguist who attempts to boil down a bunch of text or speech into a concrete set of rules when the language never had concrete rules, just a set of mutually understood subconsciously ingrained patterns with many exceptions.
that isn't to say that a linguist who does such is doing something wrong, but they are not an authority on what is right.

Obviously the rules of a language are determined by natives. That doesn’t mean you can ignore the spelling of words you don’t like on your English test, for example. The “don’t ever question natives” mentality is silly. You can and should question them just as long as you remember it’s likelier that you’re in the wrong. Which is fine.

Should i stop adding new words everyday to mining deck if i cant keep up with with the backlog? I feel like i learn words faster if i work with lower amount of reviews (20-30) than 100+ and less new cards. I keep forgetting simple words but when i started the deck and worked with like 6 new words a day i memorized everything easily, even harder words. I guess i should keep reading and just translate words on the fly and dont add anything until my deck becomes bareable again. The other thing is the previous manga was easy and i was mining like 20 words per whole vol. Now im mining 20words per chapter and it feels kind off slow to read. On the other hand im learning a lot of new words so i have dilema. Should i look for something easier for now or keep going at turtle pace.

Yeah, let me just stare at the page and try and guess what all this shit means. Ah, shucks, looks like I have to look this up in a dictionary. You know, next time I see this word I'm probably not going to remember the meaning or the reading... damn, I'm going to have to look it up again, huh. And then again, and then again, and then again, and then I'll get it.

If only there were some sort of learning system to automate this process once I've looked up a word. Some sort of system of learning that spaces out the word I'm trying to remember at set intervals so that I am statistically unlikely to forget it.

Okay できないたち, I haven't done any of my studies in over two years and I want to get back into it. I'm still able to read most things (i.e., all posts written in Japanese in the thread thus far I can read just fine) but I want to get back into the rhythm of things. Now for those people who have stopped and resumed studying after a long period of time (I sure hope there are some here); should I start Anki again from scratch or continue on from where I left off? The way I see it, if I just continue the Anki algorithm will just correct itself eventually but I REALLY don't want to go through like 3k or 4k words at the start. Any comments?

>>18415621
Here's my 2 cents. I started my mining deck 1 month into learning. Seeing those words from Anki in my reading material helped reinforce my understanding of the word and thus helped me remember (stuff like "Oh, I remember 地球温暖化, it was from Yotsubato! really helped). With my mined deck, I added literally everything that I came across that I didn't understand (including stupid shit like 賢者タイム which made learning more enjoyable) and I do not regret it one bit. The one thing that I do suggest that you do is lower your new cards/day. The way I had it was Core 2k/6k with 20 and my mined deck with 10. In your case, maybe lower it 5 cards/day. Never stop adding things into your mined deck; Anki in combination with reading material (manga, LN, VN, etc.) is 100% the most effective way of remembering moonrunes. If you come across easy cards later on you can always just delete or quickly mature them.

Yes, I mined for a good period of time. I wouldn't be adamantly saying any of this if I didn't know what a mining deck had to offer.
Sorry, I'm under the impression that most people who use anki to mine use it only to mine and are done with/never started core. For me "don't mine" was equivalent to "don't use anki." So yes, I'm suggesting don't use anki, unless you really like doing flashcards(?).
I can see doing them for rare words that you're not likely to see again, but I just use the favorites function on a dictionary app to save those and look at the whole list when I feel like it.

At the end of the day this is personal advice. It's what I did, it's more fun than anki, I see no drawbacks to looking up words, nor did keeping a mining deck make me use the dictionary less.

>It's a placebo.
Perhaps; my own experience isn't representative for everyone after all (as is the same as yours). However, if you don't see those words after a while you'll forget it. In order to not forget, you use Anki. Your argument of just "reading more" doesn't work if you don't see the specific word often enough. Also I don't see the down side for throwing words into your mined deck. If you're committed to learning the extra work will benefit you.

At the end of the day it's about how much you value the Anki system. I personally swear by its effectiveness, which is why I want to get back into it.

>>18416002
>most people who use anki to mine use it only to mine and are done with/never started core
It was always suggested in the past to do the two decks simultaneously. Your mined deck supplements your reading while the Core enhances your "general knowledge".

"The past" was just as much of a constant shitstorm of arguments about learning methods as it looks like we still have going on now, so there wasn't anything you could call a consensus.
Core really bothered me, I feel it doesn't do that much to help. Compare it to the RTK example from the last thread if you want. What you learn in Core isn't comprehensive, it's just hints and it doesn't stop you from having to use the dictionary. The work was way too hard to keep up for what I was seeing it reward me with so I stopped.

The "reading more" argument isn't really about remembering words, it's about replacing all your prospective anki review time with more reading and having more opportunities to see new words and possibly run across old ones. Whether or not you actually run across old ones or not doesn't matter, and whether or not you remember them you can always look them up and remind yourself again.

They stick eventually, some stick better than others, my personal experience is that mining doesn't really change that, so I don't bother with it anymore.

But by connecting memory and new words, that sounds like you're saying old forgotten words fall into that category too?
If I come across a word I know I've seen before, but need to look it up again to clarify something, I don't consider that a new word or a failure

Sure it's a different story when you're listening to someone in real time but when you're reading or watching anime, the dictionary isn't exactly a major obstacle to you in any way

I don't think I've had it happen super often where I completely forgot I ever knew a word, but then again it's not easy to know if that happens.

It was always a shitstorm (although most of it was trolling) but the consensus for quickly learning Japanese in order to read was always Core 2k/6k + Tae Kim so that you can start reading as quickly as possible, then reading regularly with a dictionary for words and DoJG for grammar. This method was by far the most common.

Honestly, once you're a couple of months in, you should just experiment with whatever works for you. You'll get there eventually. However, if you're just beginning, Anki is just reassuring as you are working towards something with proven results based on psychology (SRS).

Children book tier and ancient Japanese aside, 99% of all modern Japanese media is pretty much on the same level. Therefore asking instead of trying out is pointless. Also reading childish things you don't want to read, like Yotsubato, is counterproductive (and will teach you a lot less, not really preparing you for the "complex" things either).

>>18417312
There is absolutely no difference between Aokana and Subahibi, at all. In fact the former might be slightly more long-windedly written, from what I remember. I also wouldn't recommend Subahibi as your first, not because of its difficulty, but simply because it will be one of the better things you will read in your life. So even as a second or third it would be somewhat of a pity. You do you though.

>There is absolutely no difference between Aokana and Subahibi, at all. In fact the former might be slightly more long-windedly written, from what I remember.
Aokana tends to have slightly longer sentences and uses slightly fewer kanji. Those are the only noticeable differences.

>I also wouldn't recommend Subahibi as your first, not because of its difficulty, but simply because it will be one of the better things you will read in your life.
Seconding this.

You're shitposting but there's a grain of truth to this. Once you pass a certain basic level, comprehension is not about understanding the grammar or words, it's about being familiar with the ideas something is presenting to you. Someone who isn't normally into basic philosophy (that's what it is, nothing special and you don't need a degree or anything at all) will miss a lot of the things subahibi tries to express until a second read-through, especially if they still need to look up a lot of words, which acts as a second barrier to actual comprehension. Not trying to say subahibi is some magic grain of golden sand or anything, it's just thematically divorced from normal life to such an extent that it's slightly harder to comprehend, but that's true of most good fiction.

I just don't know what should I do anymore.
I got sick of Anki and stopped doing my decks over a year ago.
I have a vocab deck of 10.000 and my DOJG deck.
I've been reading sporadically ever since then, maybe one VN every 2 months or so. Mostly on my PSP and PS3, so I doing fairly well by now without having to rely on the good old text hooker crutch. I still need a dictionary every few sentences though, but lookups are fast since I recognize most kanji at least.
But I keep forgetting words. I replayed a game I last played 1.5 years ago, and those words that I didn't put into Anki and never practiced are definitely weaker in my memory and I didn't remember a good many of them.

Should I just read more? Should I start doing anki again? Should I just accept that I will never remember everything? I just don't see myself completely dropping the dictionary this way for several years.

I think you're mixing spellcheck and grammar check. It shouldn't need to analyze what the sentence means or even if it is semantically valid to tell you if you used a word or conjugation that it isn't aware of. I imagine you could use whatever methods people use to break sentences into lexemes for counting word frequency, and highlight any lexeme is unrecognized. However, my understanding is that these methods are pretty rough around the edges and can't handle a lot of valid or at least colloquial language. > the reading
Plenty of words, particularly rare ones (ie. the ones a literate adult would be unfamiliar with), have completely counter-intuitive pronunciations based on how they are written. Depending on the kanji you might be able to make at least guess at the pronunciation even if it's unfamiliar to you, though I'm obviously willing to concede that you're far less likely to guess correctly in Japanese than English.

>and the meaning of a word
Context can be used the same way in Japanese.

Additionally, if you're just reading something, not out loud, it doesn't really matter if you can pronounce it as long as you can get the meaning.

>>18422792
I'd argue context is far more important to figuring out an unfamiliar word unless it's exceedingly obvious, which as I said is equally as useful in Japanese. This goes doubly for native English speakers who don't know any other European languages. Depending on the unfamiliar word it's fairly likely in Japanese that you're getting, multiple kanji where only one is unfamiliar which might give you basically the same benefit as understanding "part" of an English word based on its components.

He has the advantage of being able to recognise the words since he knows most of the kanji before hand.

the onyomi vs. kunyomi shit will come natural to him. If you stick with kanji study it makes learning vocab pretty fucking easy and his retention rate proves that.

All that is left for him to do is to set up a mining deck so that he can add new words he never came across before and repeat ad nauseam however this process for him will be autistically fast.

>>18425642
Well my rules are pretty simple, I don't think I am lenient. Here:

Card contains Kanji?
Fail if I don't know both the meaning and reading. No exceptions.

Card doesn't contain Kanji?
Fail if I don't know the meaning and the interval is greater than one month.
If the interval is shorter than one month I will close my eyes and see if I understand the word in the example sentence (training to recognize in context). If that works I grade the card hard. Obviously this only works in Core6k with voiced example sentences, I fail those cards in my mining deck. This is mainly a result of me being frustrated at Kana cards, honestly Kanji are a huge memory crutch.

>massive inconsistency from word to word when it comes to pronunciation and meaning
Meaning is easy because I already know the Kanji, like you said.
Reading is often easy because I can infer readings from other Kanji I know.
The main challenge is being disciplined and learning for that long, obviously good reviewing speed is a prerequisite.

I missed that post yesterday. Your method seems similar to mine, though I'm behind you. The hardest thing for me has been that in order to move towards replacing kanji keywords with vocab, I need to learn shitty uncommon vocab early. It's far far easier for me to have a high rate of cards when there is overlap in kanji usage between them, than some obscure word I'm only learning so that I know a word with a shitty kanji that shouldn't be jouyou. It looks like you did core6k + 2000 extra vocab? I'm curious how you handled that. I didn't do core at all and am just going to ramp up mining when I'm entirely through KKLC. I've been reading an hour a day since I hit around 1500 vocab.

If it's an uncommon Kanji you can try keeping the keyword until you mine a word for that Kanji. Don't merely add words to replace Keywords if you have no use for that word. You can do it if you have trouble with the keyword however.
Other than that I just went through Core and mined whenever I felt like it. Honestly I have never felt it was especially hard to learn words so I can't really sympathize with the "you can't learn 1000 words in a day" people and I'm not a genius or anything. Maybe it's because I use 3 steps? You should try it.

I mean I could also have done 20 words a day and be where I am now after 85 days. That also means that I can do no new cards for the next 82 days and solely focus on reading/listening. Which one is better? Maybe there is no definite answer but I feel this was time well spent.

I meant I learned those in 3 days (as new cards in Anki) and I do plan on reviewing them in the future. I also have load balancer installed so I should have a regular review amount after a few weeks. I guess I didn't see your reply or was already gone.

I don't get your ability to say "I feel this was time well spent" as if it is a meaningful statement in any way whatsoever.
Maybe you should say that after you can read and write in Japanese.
This is not out of malice to you in any way, but reading your study updates and the following idolization of what you're doing like this >>18425804
is silly and makes me question the point of these threads. You are an admitted beginner who has not even read anything yet?
If that's the case how is what you think worth anything?

Also, I still don't understand what you mean. SRS is something you do every day by design. You didn't learn those cards in 2 and a half days, you started learning them. You haven't gotten anything "out of the way" in any sense. Are you going to follow up? How much time will it take out of every day that you could spend reading or listening instead?
Do you really believe all that time (it adds up) dedicated to vocabulary, which is easily compensated by a dictionary, is more valuable than input?

In my experience, flashcards don't stop you from using a dictionary, which makes this all seem even more pointless.
You say you don't have to look up words though, which is confusing me. Have you been reading, then? What kind of material?
You know on top of vocabulary only being a fraction of the whole language, core2k is not even that large a piece of that fraction. I can't say for sure since I haven't touched core2k but what I expect is you'll still run into tons of words that aren't in your flashcards.

There are many things it is, but i+1 is not one of them. i+1 is a property of input. What you're doing right now is memorization, not input. If this were i+1, then so too would be the way that textbooks gradually introduce vocabulary and grammar by a slowly increasing expressive power, calibrated to introducing things that are easier to acquire first.

i+1 isn't something you can design. It's something that happens when natural acquisition happens. The input with which natural acquisition happens has a property that is called "i+1", and "i+1" is defined relative to this phenomenon. It has nothing to do with "a single unknown" whatsoever.

My advice is to drop anki at some point and start looking up words in the dictionary. Or maybe not looking them up at all and just inferring meaning from kanji and context when you can. This is not really much different and the perks are you don't have to waste your time, which is apparently fairly precious, on anki.

It depends on how much experience the person has and how many other words containing those kanji they've seen. I'm still a baby, so in my case, I would probably add 厳重 just to familiarize myself with the reading since I've only ever seen that kanji in 厳しい before -- or at least, that's the only word I remember with it.
These examples came from a premade deck and I find myself suspending cards every so often because the meaning is obvious. I'm sure as I read and encounter more and more words and kanji, I'll be suspending even more cards before I'm done with this.

I wholeheartedly agree, but as a browser of both existing DJT, I would like to see both of them thrive. I just don't understand why this one here is constantly filled with so much shit, yet maintains the most users, while /int/'s DJT actually discusses the language, has no autists, and yet has trouble staying alive. Yeah, you have to do the 6 routes in a fixed order. It has a big story purpose, as your amnesia clears up a bit more and more with each route, and suddenly new options open up that you ignored on the first routes. It's really ingenious, probably the first story where I saw amnesia written actually well.

Also every route has at least 2 endings, sometimes 3. I highly recommend you to go for all endings, you can skip through the route fairly quickly once you read it once. Normal/true/bad endings are fairly different and are all worth seeing, plus with replaying the route you will pick up extra experience for the gameplay part.

Once you played a route an ingame route map will open up so it will be very easy to 100% the game even without reading a guide.

Has anyone been reading the 亜人ちゃんは語りたい manga series? It popped up under also viewed while seeing if there was a new ふらいんぐういち volume out and got me interested. Sort of juggling the reading backlog and keep coming across something else interesting looking.

Another question, is anyone else here up to date -volume wise- with からかい上手の高木さん? I felt as though the earlier chapter with the photo album and then the spin off volume have kind of left the series in a pretty awkward position of being basically pigeonholed into a single focus running gap with an inevitable outcome. It's on the easier side. Grammar is very simple and sentences are short, but it comes with a lot more vocabulary and a higher kanji count than the usual moege due to the well-developed fantasy setting.

Keep in mind though that pretty much all VNs except a few exceptions (usually obvious ones like chuuni action) fall into a similar difficulty level. That's why I think it's pointless to ask about "difficulty" when reading VNs. it's far more beneficial to not ask too many questions and just dive into whatever looks manageable and whatever interests you. Read something that you enjoy constantly, something that you won't end up dropping or stalling even when it gets slow. Aiyoku is a good game for that since things are always happening and developing but you will still need patience in some of the slower parts if it's your first VN because you'll be reading very slowly.

Depending on how much of a beginner you are it may be difficult until you are more familiar with kanji as the optical character recognition isn't perfect and can require manually correcting the text.

Kanjitomo and capture2text are ocr tools anons use for windows computers. The more familiar you are with kanji, the easier ocr tools are to use (for corrections).

They also use full sized ゃ ゅ ょ
It's pretty much just tradition, publisher rules, probably from when printing wasn't as accurate. You see them actually use small letters now and then in newer stuff.
Besides it's not too hard to tell from context. Old texts didn't even have っ, they used big つ instead.

That sort of rote drilling via writing is generally a waste of time. I won't say that there's no point in writing the kana out, but there's no point in writing them out more than a handful of times in one sitting. Also, don't copy computer fonts or you'll write them wrong (the images on wikipedia that the guide links to showing stroke order are actually showing you computer fonts, so don't rely on those). If you're going to write, copy the stroke orders and forms from these:

Talking about reading, here's a sentence I can't quite understand:

(過去の歴史は下記を参照)

I think it's trying to say "the previous information is available below" or "referenced below" but that last word at the end is throwing me off, it's after a text about a merging of 2 companies, but it's a short text so I can't imagine it really saying that it's "referenced" below, as there is not much to be referenced really.

It's not odd. It's extremely common, get used to it. They're just dropping ~ください

Leaving out words that are implied is the norm in Japanese. Even ください can be said to originate from the 連用形 and probably came to be the imperative form as an abbreviation of くださいませ
(though it could also just be a sound change on くだされ)

>Am I correct in assuming that a verb always marks the end of a sentence?
Any phrase describing an action will need to have the verb or copula at the end. It's how particles work. But like any rule, there are exceptions. Ending sentences without a verb or copula in Japanese is called 体言止め
Verbs are inflected and come in the middle of sentences all the time so it's not that verbs always mark the end of a sentence, it's that a sentence's end usually has a verb or copula.

>>18430013
だ is not a particle, and it's not a verb, doesn't go with を
You don't say ~を参照だ
It's just a matter of getting used to common phrasing
If they wanted to say they performed the action of referencing something, they would just put it in past tense like 参照しました
