The company making this game has almost 300 employees now but for some reason there's less content than there's ever been. There's a huge amount of characters but only the previously established ones are worthwhile. The new ones could be from any generic mobage and I wouldn't notice. There's not enough time for any of them to get fleshed out before they move on to the next one due to the nature of the game. Then there are those characters that did have enough time to get fleshed out, but since they decided to choose the most insufferable designs, tropes and devices there's no possible way to have anything interesting come out of it.
With the recent animes being absolute disasters as well, once the sheep start flocking towards another game Fate itself won't last very long without its old identity to stand on.

It isn't really happening. Touhou entries fall as artists decide to draw different things, and Touhou has many of its own dedicated events. Many artists enter Touhou works at Reitaisai but do something else for Comiket. Doujin culture isn't just one event in a vacuum.

I would hope this wouldnt need to be explained here of all places but Comiket numbers are a terrible gauge of popularity. Its more of a guage of whats trendy at the time. The fact Touhou is still as big as it is without the major cooperate backing the others have is more of what you should be looking at. Its actually disappointing that out of the top 5 of last Comiket, Touhou is the only one that isnt a fucking gacha. Also its common knowledge that tons of doujin creators are rejected from Comiket every year which is another reason its not a good gauge of popularity.
Its also only natural that Touhou will fall off over time. Its been around for over 20 years. Alot of older fans who created doujin works will eventually move on too other things (or at least not do anything Touhou related for Comiket) which is normal. After so many years your interest will wane no matter how much you love something. As already noted by other people though, Touhou still has Reitaisai which is still pretty big (and getting bigger from what im told). Last Autumn Reitaisai alone had a little under 2000 circles participating and summer events of any kind generally tend too be bigger.
Oh yeah and its worth noting that while older fans might not be doing things for Touhou anymore it seems that the younger generation in Japan really love the series, which also isnt represented just by circle numbers at Comiket. Yet. No doubt many younger fans will eventually start creating Touhou content in the future.

Im not shitting on Comiket friend. Nothing I said about it was untrue, or even really negative for that matter. Its just not good for gauging actual interest and popularity, and tons of creators are in fact rejected every year (since space is a finite thing). The only thing im not a fan of is how popular certain things are, but im not complaining about that and people are free too like and make content for whatever they want.
And hey, Touhou may be old but the passion from fans and ZUN is whats kept it going for so long. Just because its not #1 or even #2/#3 anymore is something im fine with. Something doesnt need too be the most popular for it too be enjoyable and loved.

Im talking about Comiket numbers specifically, I never said the series as a whole is reclining (if thats the impression I gave then know it wasnt my intention). And the reason I didnt check the numbers for Reitaisei is because I dont know where too actually find them and dont want too give incorrect information. If you can provide a source id appreciate it since I want too look for myself and cant seem too find any accurate information when searching. Im also a pleb who doesnt know Japanese so that doesnt help.
